I want say to Pike R.Alpha that now I have my Mac Pro 1.1 working perfectly like a charm thanks to your boot 3.1.
I put one of my ssd on a Macbook Air (USB connection ) and installed el Capitan and after that changed the 2 boot files ( "standalone and coresuervices ) and put it again in my old Mac and everything run perfectly with El Capitan 10.11.1 (after two days working on it).
All the persons in this forum are the BEST , THANK YOU again for your genial work .
Sorry for my very bad english.
LOL Yeah I remember. Thanks mate! Hey. Maybe this summer. It's been a while when we were on Mallorca. Need to borrow dad's sailboat again. I think there's a harbour nearby, so perhaps we could meet there?

@javirnat: Beware of "false (English) friends". The English adjective "genial" has nothing to do with the Spanish adjective "genial". Perhaps the best translation of Spanish "genial" would be the English adjective "brilliant". You could also use a roundabout expression, such as "a work of genius". I know these things because my wife is Spanish, just like Pike's. Take care.
-----------------
Sorry for may bad english, but I always have good intentions .
And I want to say too that PeterHolbrook and the others in this forum are brilliant persons .
Thanks all of you for doing that my Mac Pro 1.1 runs like a new one.

Hi,

I would like to ask if anyone, ejem... 666sheep, would like to (if at all possible) update the PikeYoseFix script with Pike's 3.1 boot.efi black or grey or both?

Thanks

Hi guys. Just wanted to say Hi and thank you! really a huge thank you for your work. I have contributed through the donation link.

I have two MacPro1,1 machines.

The second one only has a stock Apple supplied video card which I'm working to get changed. That machine I can nuke for any purpose - so I'm happy to help with testing etc.

The first machine has 2 x 10.11 boot drives - the first of which is just a standard hard drive with a 2.x version of the boot.efi and the machine is stable and running well although some applications like "Console" crash... so that's a bit of a bummer. The other hard drive is a Fusion drive that I've built myself - I installed the OS via my MBP direct to the drive and subsequently replaced the boot.efi files. Now when I take the latest boot.efi 3.1 release it boots to the desktop for about 20 seconds before the machine kernel panics.

The one thing I have not done is build an installer ... happy to do this... may need a couple of pointers to set me off in the right direction. There's nothing precious on the fusion drive - so I can nuke and rebuild as necessary.

So again, thank you. I'm happy to help out with some testing.

Hi David,

Thank you!

Are you saying that you can boot the Fusion drive with boot.efi v2.0 but not with v3.1?
If that's a yes, then please try boot.efi v2.1 and boot.efi v3.0 as well and let us know your findings.

Thanks.

a. reset parameter ram [cmd-opt-P-R] - twice for good measure
b. same boot and reboot experience
c. hold down option key on boot to select boot drive - if I wait I see a kernel panic on this screen as well under 30 seconds
d. select El Capitan stable boot drive (no fusion) - OS loads - desktop displayed.

e. machine power cycled
f. desktop not displayed - spinning coloured beachball
g. hold down option key on boot to select boot drive - select MacOS 9 - fallback drive (with a much older boot.efi - probably tamo) - successful boot to desktop - select startup disk of El Capitan stable drive - reboot successful.

Boot.efi - 3.0 - installed onto FusionHD

h. hold down option key on boot to select boot drive - quickly
i. select El Capitan stable boot drive (no fusion) - OS loads - desktop not displayed - spinning coloured beachball

I compared boot.efi v2.0 with v2.1 and I can't find anything that could cause this KP. I did make one SIP related change, and this nightly test version – a special one for you – can now be downloaded from https://ci.appveyor.com/project/Piker-Alpha/macosxbootloader so please give it a try.

What I do know is that Peter compiled v2.0 with Microsoft Visual Studio 2013 Professional, but I don't believe that the MS compiler is the issue here.

Hi Pike,

I just wanted to personally thank you and all individuals involved in making Mac Pro Boot.efi ! I just sent you my donation today after installing a fresh SSD in my old Mac Pro 1,1. El Capitan is running perfectly so far, and it was time to add my donation. I'm very sorry to hear donations have been slow to make their way to you... but hopefully it's just a slow ramp up as more users make the effort to upgrade their older mac pros & do the right thing in rewarding your efforts.

All the best... you and the crew deserve more... and I give you my sincere appreciation.

Hubba..... oh and sorry auto-correct made my payment signature Hubby... frikkin auto-correct.

Errr. Bugger. Bugger. Bugger. While you were doing that I thought I create a fresh installer and nuked the Fusion drive - starting from scratch. Sorry.

You'll be interested in this transcript. I have not completed the install.

Download El Capitan install from MacApp store

I'm still not convinced that the boot.efi file replacement script is working. One example:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 604728 3 Nov 16:33 boot.efi

Also. If you have a spare HDD/SDD then install without first setting up a Fusion Drive. This way we get a confirmation that the installation process actually works with boot.efi v2.1 and greater on your computer.

Why is there this line:

/Recovery HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi...........[NOT.FOUND.]

For ReplaceBootloaderNoRecovery? Also. Does is who errors when something goes wrong? I mean nice script, perhaps, but what if it doesn't work?

Hello.
I want to thank everyone for the hard work, especially Pike R. Alpha.

I have a problem very similar to the one of dgwilson.

The replaceBootloader script doesn't work for me, so I replace the boot.efi manually.

I tried with the official 3.1 and the one Pike made for dgwilson, but the results are the same.

When I replace the installer's boot.efi, the install process stops halfway through and the Mac reboots.

To install it I have to use my El Capitan supported Mac.

When installed, the system randomly shutdown and reboot.

It can be 1 minute or 15 after it booted.

I don't understand the report. Can someone tell me what is going on?

Thanks.

Hi guys,

I'm the author of 'replaceBootloader' script. I just recently added the Recovery HD suppot and there may be some issues with the detection if you have a non-standard partition/drive makeup. I'm updating the zip from the original post to include the original 'replaceBootloader' script and a second one called 'replaceBootloaderWithRecovery' with the newer Recovery HD support. Please give the original script another run with the Fusion drive etc and let me know the results.

Thanks,

-clawfinger

Edit: @dgwilson thanks for the 'diskutil list' output. I've never had a Fusion drive in any of my machines and I didn't realize that the SSD portion was actually exposed as it's own separate drive along with the fact that the Recovery HD ends up there as well. Let me see about reworking the WithRecovery script to account for that.

Hi guys,

I'm the author of 'replaceBootloader' script.

Hi clawfinger,

I've tried to run the script several times without success. I've prepared a blank 8GB partition and placed your script, Pike's boot.efi and the Install OS X El Capitan app all in the same folder.

What am I doing wrong?

I'm still not convinced that the boot.efi file replacement script is working. One example:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 604728 3 Nov 16:33 boot.efi

@pike That was from the Recovery HD which definitely wouldn't have gotten replaced because I was not aware of the makeup of Fusion drives when I authored the script.
Also. If you have a spare HDD/SDD then install without first setting up a Fusion Drive. This way we get a confirmation that the installation process actually works with boot.efi v2.1 and greater on your computer.

@dgwilson I agree, you have an overly complex setup going on here and there are too many variables. I would remove all drives except for a single regular mechanical non-fusion hard drive and try the installation again. It might also be a good idea to remove the USB 3.0 card at the very least just to rule out some new found incompatibility.
Why is there this line:

/Recovery HD/com.apple.recovery.boot/boot.efi...........[NOT.FOUND.]

For ReplaceBootloaderNoRecovery? Also. Does is who errors when something goes wrong? I mean nice script, perhaps, but what if it doesn't work?

@pike That line is purely aesthetic and he probably just missed commenting it out.

I'm having the exact same issue as TimeFire for over a week and I can't figure it out. I'm totally stable and running flawlessly from Yosemite 10.10.5 with Pike's v3.1 boot.efi.

I've installed ElCapitan numerous times with a supported iMac. Swapped Pike's boot.efis, manually fixed permissions so everything is -rw-r-r- root wheel with no extended attributes. The MacPro boots from firewire and/or internal drives, but won't last much longer than 20 min without a hard crash to black screen. I have numerous panic reports, all similar to TimeFire's.

I've zeroed both a 250GB firewire drive and entire 500GB internal drive and installed EC to them from the supported iMac, not to mention various attempts with partitioned drives. Nothing works.

As far as installing from my MacPro itself, I've tried with an unmodified MAS installer and an install partition created according to splifingate's recent instructions. Both of them fail and report there was an error reading essentials.pkg.

I've checked my ram using memtest and gotten no errors. I have flashed the firmware to 2,1. I have 6GB ram total - 2x2GB (OWC) and 4x512MB (OEM Hynix). I see that TimeFire has only 4GB - maybe we're onto something there...

I'm gonna ask someone to pull out some ram and drop down to 6GB in the regular thread and see if they can reproduce my issue. The iMac has only 2GB, so I thought 6MB would be fine, but that's a different processor. Could it matter?

Thanks again everyone.

It might also be a good idea to remove the USB 3.0 card at the very least just to rule out some new found incompatibility.
One observation might be in order: I don't have a Fusion drive, nor have I ever used any scripts to overwrite the stock boot.efi with Pike's boot.efi, but I do have a USB 3.0 card, which works perfectly, and my Mac Pro 1,1 works just fine. I had a kernel panic with one of the early versions (2.0?) of boot.efi, but that was due to a corrupt or obsolete kext. Once I removed it, everything has worked perfectly. How coherent is the replacement of files in a folder of a Fusion disk? I mean, is there any likelihood to the scenario that replacing, say, boot.efi, will only get it "apparently" replaced (so that it will appear replaced in the Finder or running ls, and the stock boot.efi will still be there? Are you sure your RAM is valid? I've read reports in which a fellow was very happy with Yosemite, then updated to El Capitan and his computer would panic. He discovered that some of his RAM was faulty. Once he replaced a couple of risers on the Mac Pro, it started working fine.

@PeterHolbrook
Right, my USB 3.0 card works just fine too, as does my Firewire 800 card. But since these are 3rd-Party hardware not provided by Apple themselves, it might still be a good idea to remove it at least temporarily to eliminate that as an extraneous variable. I know it took me a few tries to find fully compatible USB 3.0 & Firewire 800 cards with prior versions of OS X.

@dgwilson
We need to narrow down your setup so we can isolate whether or not the issue is with Pike's boot.efi.

@iMattux
Surprisingly, according to the official System Requirements only 2GB is "required". Still, it might be worth it to try out different memory configurations and/or different memory modules. Also, please clearly indicate which system you are targeting with what logs, my understanding is that the unsupported iMacs have several other hardware support issues besides the 32-bit bootloader.

Edit: @iMattux sorry, just saw your other post regarding the script. What sort of output are you getting? Are you passing a volume name or did you edit the top of the script? What specific system & hard drive configuration is this with?

Edit: @dgwilson thanks for the 'diskutil list' output. I've never had a Fusion drive in any of my machines and I didn't realize that the SSD portion was actually exposed as it's own separate drive along with the fact that the Recovery HD ends up there as well. Let me see about reworking the WithRecovery script to account for that.

Depending on the output I posted... be careful what you're looking at. I'll happily repost a built fusion drive.
You could cheat... and build a fusion drive out of 2 x HDD's - the system will never know - at least I don't think it will.
