Noticed that my iPad 10.5 have this problem now. I am out of warranty and reported it to Apple via their forums. Quick question: Any luck of getting it replaced in US when Out of Warranty?

We should call this "Spotgate". :(
You could try contacting Tim Cook pointing him to this thread. His email is public: tcook@apple.com
Some people did it for other issues with Apple devices with success: https://www.quora.com/Will-Tim-Cook-be-as-responsive-to-personal-emails-as-Steve-Jobs

I took mine to the store yesterday. It is out if warranty but they checked it over and confirmed it was a defect and should be replaced. It was bought from Currys though and not direct from Apple so they printed out a sheet confirming their diagnosis for me to give to Currys they are responsible under EU law as the seller. Will take to them at some point this week.

Make sure you get it done before March 2019! :rolleyes:o_O

I went to the Apple store in Manchester, NH USA today and they declined to address this issue due to my iPad being out of warranty by about three months. They offered me an exchange for about $500. No thanks, not thrilled. (Note: I edited the attached photo to make the bright spot more visible as it seems in real life)

Hi, I've bought extended apple care warranty on my iPad Pro 10.5 from day 1, I noticed the spot about 6 months ago but didn't do anything about it till I read this about this issue here, scheduled an appointment with the Genius bar & when I brought the iPad in, they did a 1-1 exchange and assured me the replaced set was brand new and not a refurb set. Still under extended apple care.

I just noticed this too, just as the OP reported, 2 inches above the home button. It’s not a pen impact , clearly it’s not a coincidence all of us have it in the same spot.

I noticed mine about a month ago, same spot, same issue as everyone else. Mine is about 1 year and 2 months old - just took it to the Apple store and got it replaced with no fuss. Unfortunately for others in this thread, I live in Australia so we're automatically covered outside the standard 1 year warranty period.

So this post is more for those in Australia with a 10.5 inch iPad with the bright spot issue - book a genius bar appointment, just reference that you've found this issue online with other people. I simply state "I would expect an iPad pro to last more than one year", but Apple pretty much openly acknowledges it's a standard 2 year warranty in Australia - I was told so when I was given the replacement as the Apple staff member said I have 2 years from today for warranty

Oh how interesting the new redesigned ipad pro's have folios and smart keyboards that cover the back of the device. I wonder why that might be? I'll be curious to see how hot the new pro's get. I'm gonna be trading in the bright spotted ipad pro 10.5 for the 11 and taking the hit since I couldn't get Apple to replace the unit.

I have the same white spot as well. I don't think it's coincidence. Everyone will get the same white spot after roughly a year... If you're still in warranty, you're lucky.

We should raise this as the #whitespotgate so Apple will run the replacement program as they did with the #batterygate.

Same issue here as well happened about 10-12 months in. iPad always in a case and never dropped or damaged in any way.

We should keep this post on the first forum page. This should really be acknowledged by Apple, and the more people see it the better the chances of people reporting the issue to Apple directly.

I'm in Aus as well and noticed this exact same spot in the exact same place as others on here, so I guess I need to book a Genius appointment, thankfully we have ACL rights here.

So finally getting a resolution on mine.
I'm in the UK and out of warranty but took it along to my local Apple Store. They checked it over, ran some diagnostics and confirmed it was a fault and would need to be replaced at no cost. The support guy took some details then asked where it was purchased as it wasn't direct from Apple. I confirmed it was Currys. He said out of warranty must be taken up with the retailer - had I bought it direct then it would have been swapped out there and then. He did prepare a work authorisation sheet detailing the issue and also included the cost for a replacement.

I took this all to Currys and discussed. They were adamant they would need to send the iPad to their service centre for inspection and when I told them it was out of warranty, they said they would need to charge £60 for sending it off. I told them this wasn't necessary since I had been to Apple and they confirmed the defect and provided evidence of this. The Currys person then got their Manager. I explained this all to him and he said he would need to send it off. I told him this wasn't the case and that I was due a replacement. He said that is fine but they would source a replacement from Apple directly and I would need to pay for it. I then quoted Consumer Rights Act 2015 and since I gave evidence it was an inherent fault, it was up to Currys as the retailer to either repair or replace at no cost to myself otherwise I was entitled to a full refund. The manager then referred me to the Currys Customer Service helpline as it was above his authority.

I called Currys and explained it all to them. I was redirected to their Out Of Warranty team who were very helpful and set up the case there and then. They asked me to go back to the Store and quote their case id and show the Apple repair sheet and they would sort it out. Back in store, I went through it all, the woman spoke to the Out of Warranty team on the phone and confirmed Currys would organise a replacement - likely a store credit or voucher. They called me back a week later to confirm they would refund me the cost of the replacement iPad direct from Apple including VAT which would be paid directly to me and I can then go back to the Apple store and swap out for a direct replacement.

Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to ensure people in the UK in the same position are not fobbed off and get a result. If you have bought from Apple then it is a simple swap out at no cost to you. If you bought from elsewhere, you have the same entitlement, it just takes a bit longer to sort out. Key thing to quote if bought from other retailers is the Consumer Rights Act 2015 which mandates you are entitled to a repair (not possible for iPads) or replacement and if they can't provide that then a full refund. If you bought from Currys, tell the customer service person you want this referred to the Out of Warranty team to speed things along.
The first step though is to contact Apple and get them to verify the issue first as their documentation is key to forcing other retailers to provide the resolution and leaves them with no room to push back.
Hope this helps.

So I’m in the US and I am out of warranty. I just ordered the new iPad and will trade this one in. However on the new one I bought it on a CC that offers 3 years of warranty. Lesson learned.

So ultimately you pay for the replacement from Apple and then Currys refund you that money? Could you just get a refund of the money and put that towards the new model ipad from Apple, should you wish?

Yes, Currys have paid up front so I could just put that towards the new model if I wish - still undecided yet.

If Apple are not aware of this problem with the screen, then it is possible the same manufacturing defect may affect the new 11" Pro models as well.

However, if Apple are aware of the problem are they then just continuing to sell the 10.5" without taking steps to correct the defect or advise customers what is going on?

Perhaps it is too costly to troubleshoot or fix the defect during production so they prefer to issue similarly affected replacement units during the warranty period and deny help after warranty has expired.

I am wanting to buy either a 10.5" or 11" Pro but am not going anywhere near either iPad until Apple acknowledge this problem and prevents it from occurring in newly built iPads.
