Well, I can understand the pain of using an older device an older iPad especially something which is earlier than iOS 11.x as it is really a pain in the a** it really is, I myself am sailing in the same boat. But having said that, unless someone has that kind of some extra disposable income to invest in an iPad right now and get a hit on the resale amount when trying to resell it later in the year and then again invest in a new device that is a different case, but someone who only upgrades every couple of years, right now if someone who already has an iPad even if it is not running iOS 11.x and is an older device, I think investing and saving money in the 2018 iPad Pro would be a much much wiser decision, I know it is a suffering for somedays..but as they say it is for a better tomorrow, a better future. :)
It's not like the Pro 10.5 will suddenly stop working once the new iPads are released. Keeping it is also an option. Granted, I have no burning desire to get FaceID nor OLED. :p

Besides, what happens if the rumored upgrades to the iPad don't materialize until 2019?

Well one can have a better device !

Then it all boils down to individual whims and fancies and desires, what one values more over other.

I think the way leaked news and information is coming out of Apple Components suppliers based in Taiwan, China and Japan and after the notorious Ming Chi Kuo who has this reputation of coming out with the most accurate news, I think we can atleast expect to see the Face Id in the 2018 iPad Pro if not OLED Displays...That much is for sure !!

One year newer device. The device released after that will be better, too, as will the device after. Meh, Kuo makes mistakes, too. People just tend to focus on the hits rather than the misses.

As mentioned though, it boils down to the user. Personally, if I still had an iPad Air or (heaven forbid) older, I'd gladly upgrade to the Pro 10.5 now (at a good discount) rather than suffer another 6+ months or so.

Besides, if one buys at discount to begin with, the depreciation due to resale is also reduced. Say, one gets the Pro 10.5 for $500 and sells it for $350 6 months later (probably gonna sell higher), that's just $150 depreciation or $25/mo amortized for 6 months. I spend a lot more than that on random stuff.

I would wonder if that's the case all across the world with resale value of Apple device not just in U.S please do not only make U.S as a bench mark to decide depreciation and resale value on Apple products !

The general analysis still works. I wouldn't buy a new Pro at full MSRP at this point in time but at 20+% discount, the depreciation hit when newer models are released shouldn't be all that bad. If one decides to keep the Pro 10.5 instead of immediately upgrading to the newer model, even better in terms of amortized cost.

Tech moves forward. If one just keeps waiting to upgrade for whatever is rumored in the next model, they'll just be waiting forever and will never buy.

You do realize the way life works... if you wait for the 2018 update, it will be marginal and unexciting, and if you go ahead and get a 2017they will introduce a must-have feature you can't live without.

Well if you ask me frankly my wish, I am waiting for an iPad Pro 10.5" which is 1. is an OLED Display 2. Has no home button 3. Has Face ID and rest all marginal hardware upgrade goes without saying ! lol !!

Lol, hence why I usually prefer to buy upon release despite the lack of discounts for the super early adopters (assuming the new model has something on my wishlist, of course). Midway in the product cycle, I become wishy-washy on whether to upgrade or wait. :p

I just went from 2017 iPad to 10.5” iPad Pro ref’d and glad. Even the small increase in screen and A10. Just basic use user.

I’m guessing only the 10.5 will get the X treatment (at least at first) and will be a separate model (won’t necessarily replace the current 10.5).
Exactly. I’ve been saying this for a while. Just like the iPhone release of last year. The 12.9 and 10.5 will be legacy devices. They will use the 10.5 chassis for the IPad X and increase screen size with same physical dimensions.

And that will get me to upgrade my Air 2. :)

Since even the ios 11.3 has hints about new ipad pro its clear it will happen this year probably at WWDC

Yes, good point ! There is no doubt in my mind with the way, the media and some notable sources have leaked out information we will see a slimmer bezel, no home button, Face Id iPad Pro this year most likely !

yes, i dont think apple wants this...so i think the display sizes will remain
Three options...

1.) Bezels reduced, and screen sizes are the same.
2.) Bezels/design are the same but screen sizes are increased.
3.) Nothing happens.

4.) *Crazy other options...
A.) Apple ditches 12.9” to have just one iPP.
B.) Apple updates just the 12.9” with new design/features for now. **It’s hard to imagine Apple redesigning their flagship iPad again after just 8 months since release.

I think option 1 has 70% chances and option 4B has the rest

I am planning on buying an iPad Pro 10.5 in the summer since that is when I can work Urban League. I have a while until then so I am waiting for updates! I am very excited! I am planning on purchasing the 10.5/256gb/Space Gray or Rose Gold!

As an accountant, I like this response with all of the depreciation & amortization talk!! Lol.

I bought the 10.5 on launch day, it’s an incredible device. Absolutely no complaints. It’s beautiful, powerful, & does everything I need. I use Word for typing if I need to. I have a work computer but I use this for just about anything not work related.

That being said, the next one will be even better. When I bought the 10.5, all the talk was about how it couldn’t get any better. They say it won’t have OLED, but it will have faceID, no bezels like the iPhone X, etc. As much as I love this one, I’ll sell it a few weeks before this one releases while the value is still high & buy the new one. I always like having the newest one because of how great they are.

Anyway, that’s how I do it with just about all Apple devices I get & end up only spending a little bit on each upgrade due to the product I have losing its value a bit. The key is just to sell it before everyone knows about the new one!

For you, it just depends on if you’ll wanna upgrade again when the new one comes out. Either way, you’ll be getting a great device! Hope this helps!

Seems Apple want to release new ipads in the fall
that means 2 things
1) Apple want them to be relaeased with iOS12 by default (so another big jump for the ipad)
2) Apple wants to skip direct to A12X

Can we have some more leaks on what the 10.5" iPad Pro is going to have? and when is it likely going to release ? anyone in south east asia reading this ? lol !
