I hear you. In the past I always sold my iPhone just week or so before. And it used to be within a few hundred dollars of the new phone's cost. With these phones hitting $1500-2000 it's going to be challenging to keep doing that.

I know though once they're in stores, I'm going to have a hard time resisting that larger OLED screen.

And yeah - I had that exact response the other day when using my wife's 7 Plus! Couldn't believe how slippery it felt compared to a glass back.
I've dropped it and had it slip out of my hands over 10 times in the span of a month, luckily i'm trading it in when i upgrade and physical damage (of the casing) doesn't matter :)

I wonder why this thread is so dead compared to the UK one. The iPhone was never THAT popular here, but it's such a large disparity. Maybe the iPhone is getting too expensive for Canadians. $2K is most people's take home pay per month, pretty ridiculous to spend that much on a phone when something they currently have, or something half the price works just as good.

In all honesty I all of us on MR are probably a tiny percentage of iPhone users or even those who purchase outright. I'd imagine the majority use some sort of finance or carrier plan.

Also will probably see a bit more traffic here after the event tomorrow. I mean, I've mentioned that I'm not going to upgrade, but I haven't even seen everything that will be offered. Lol there's always something that grabs my attention.

That is definitely true. I think iPhone sales would be cut in half if there weren't carrier subsidies that reduce the cost of the phone up front (you end up paying the full price for the phone anyways, just over a 2 year term). Even so, whenever I go to the Apple store, I saw people playing the the X, but they would always lament at how expensive it is and that they wouldn't get it. I seriously think they're getting close to pricing themselves in the 'luxury' category in Canada. When you factor in the exchange rate change and the fact that the Xs+ may cost more than the X, that is a huge chunk of change for anyone to dish out.

I agree. It's certainly gotten tough over the past 5 years. I remember the 649 days of the 4 and 4S. Even the 5s was 719 CAD for the base. The 6 Plus is when it really started to take off. And of course the more expensive phones / options occurred right as the CAD was dropping so its become even more crazy how much the price has changed. Essentially double from 5 years ago.

I also think the prices are being raised because Apple and other phone manufacturer's know that the tech is maturing and that these 'super cycles' of phone upgrading are becoming less and less frequent. I think this is a way to maintain their profits in a scenario where they will be selling less total units moving forward. the X was a special thing because it was the 10th anniversary iPhone and a complete redesign, hence the high number of sales. Apple knows this is unlikely to continue.

I'm sure they have some AR stuff up their sleeve and perhaps a new form factor they are working on, but who knows when that will come, probably 2020 or 2021.

Yeah, phone tech isn't evolving like it was 4-5 years ago, and prices have doubled in the high end. Not a recipe to create demand...

I used to upgrade every 2 years, but my launch-day iPhone 6 is 4 years old now. I got a new battery last year, and it's still working fine. I'm upgrading to the new 6.5" model and can justify it since it's been so long, but considering I paid 1500$ for my MacBook Pro (2015), these phone prices are getting crazy.

The latest generation of MacBook Pro's have followed the increased price trend though. My Macbook Pro 15" 2017 was $3,700. It used to be that only the highest spec'd macbook pro's were 3,700, mine's only middle spec. If you compare a 2015 iPhone price to a 2015 MacBook Pro price, its relatively the same differential.

I’m hoping the prices won’t be that different than last year’s pricing.

What’s your speculation on the price of the 256GB iPhone XS Plus model?

I’m going to be preordering and picking up in store for sure.

Assuming: $999 USD iPhone Xs Max 64GB, I would say in Canada the 256GB version will be $1,649+tax = $1,863.37 CDN

My reasoning is the iPhone X 256GB was $1,529.00 before tax. If you factor in the currency depreciation, easily tack on another $120. If you add Apple care (it was $249 for the X, probably $279 for the Xs Max) the 256GB iPhone Xs Max w/AC+ will be (with tax) = $2,178.64.

And even if I'm WRONG, I wouldn't be far off. That's the scary thing.

This makes sense to me. <shudder>

Wow, that is scary. Thanks for the breakdown! I cannot believe I’ll be dropping close to $2K for an iPhone. When I bought my 6 Plus it was just over $1K.

This is insane.

What's actually even scarier is that the above assumes the Xs Max is going to start at the same price as last year's iPhone, which is in no way guaranteed. If the Plus model starts at something like $1,099, that will push the 256 w/AC+ to somewhere around $2,340 CDN.

On the bright side, if you're going with the XS (rumoured to be $899 US) then the price should be the same as the X is today. So there's that I guess.

Here's what I'm hoping:

Xs 64GB = 899$ US = 1199$ CAD
Xs Plus 64GB = 999$ US = 1329$ CAD

Add 210$ CAD for 256GB storage.

And yes, I'm also still hoping they call it Plus and not Max. :D

well, you're part of the problem.

people will spend that money so apple will try to maximize it's profits. spending $2k for a phone to text your friends, make phone calls and use instagram is just retarded.

i'll move on from apple if that's the case. i'm 'loyal' but not loyal enough to spend that much money.

i will however be buying 2 phones on launch and selling them for a profit to the suckers who need the next best thing for instagram likes :D

You're just a different part of the problem.

if it's gonna help me pay off the iPhone Xs Max, then why not?

last year my friend bought 2 iPhone X's and sold one 256gb 1hr after delivery for DOUBLE the price. paid off his other one.

i've done this in the past as well but last year didn't have the patience to sell on kijiji so i gave one to my cousin 2 cost and returned the other one cause it was too small for me to use.

256 increases resale value too...
Not dollar for dollar. That said, if you have a zillion photos and a million tunes, 256 will be what you need. I think I read they're even going to have a 512 model..

Right. I'm not judging you, but you called someone else part of the problem for paying Apple's premium prices. You're doing the same thing. In fact, you buy multiple phones. You make back the money by selling them, but it's all the same to Apple.

Hey dude, I see what you’re trying to say but saying that I’m part of the problem is uncalled for.
I had a chuckle though, of all the people you could put down with that message, you picked on the wrong guy. I’m an iOS Developer, and unless you’re a developer too I doubt you use the phone more than me.

By your definition of being part of the problem (i.e. spending $2K for basic functions), you’re actually more part of the problem than me.
I’m only saying this because you pre-judged me without knowing anything about me. I hope you think twice next time when passing judgement on an innocuous post.

Who is the buyer? Someone who snoozed to pre-order? What physical and memory size would you recommend to get for best resale value?

I really don’t care what others think about me tbh and neither should you. It’s not that serious and you shouldn’t get offended by someone’s comments on the damn internet lol

Ok I'll play too:

Here's my guess on US pricing:
r $699 64, $799 128, $899 256
x $899 64, $1049 256, $1199 512
max $999 64, $1149 256, $1299 512

Here's my guess on CDN pricing:
r $979 64, $1129 128, $1279 256
x $1279 64, $1489 256, $1699 512
max $1419 64, $1629 256, $1839 512

What's scarier is that someone, somewhere will justify that price to themselves and will justify that purchase to themselves
