That's exactly what they did. Apple has been maxxing out on profit generation from hardware and actual products (it's not everyday they develop a completely new line of product that's as successful as the Apple Watch). Therefore the only way to increase profits outside of developing new products is to provide services that are paid for. Apple Care + is amazing for them, considering that a vast majority of those who buy it don't have to use it. They know that for laptops, the vast majority dont have problems the first 3 years, therefore they are safe. For the phones, they've determined 2 years. Of course sometimes they have to replace devices, but their doing so at Apple's own manufacturing costs for parts, which is super cheap for them. So when you pay a replacement deductible of $129+tax for a new phone, they give you a new phone which at their cost is probably something like $500. BUT they also get your broken phone back, which has all of the internals working perfectly and can absolutely be transported into another device that'll be used to replace the next person's device. They aren't losing money anywhere any way you look at it.

The reason they added wireless charging is not to follow samsung (wireless charging is a joke and unnecessary), it was so they had an excuse to design the phone in such a way that if you break the glass, you have that massive repair bill waiting for you. Psychologically it had an effect on me. For the X and XS Max, i bought AC+ without hesitation. If the back glass replacement was a simple swap, I definitely would not have gotten it. Therefore over the 2 years, Apple got $562 from me for warranty.

Cliffs: Apple is brilliant.

Man, I think you honestly misunderstand what my post was trying to say. I get your point which is the foundation for the reason of my post. But I think you’re not seeing what I was trying to say. It’s cool though.

Btw, Apple is charging over $800 to replace an XS Max for broken screen out of warranty. Ridiculous premium. Better off going on kijiji buying used

Pre ordered iPhone XS. Was supposed be delivered on Friday, September 21.

Latest update 09/24/2018 2:05 P.M.

"We currently have the package. The receiver requested clearance by a non-UPS broker. / As requested, the package was transferred to a Free Trade Zone or a non-UPS broker."

Today is September 27. Called Apple and UPS. Neither one has any clue. Apple rep requested an investigation.

100%

But you know there's going to be thousands of people who will purchase the XS Max outright, break their screen, and get it fixed there. People will invest over 2 grand in their phone without thinking twice, some people get a new device every year. Apple has that brand power. I think that's ridiculous, but someone out there won't.

No two ways about it, we're really on the short end of the stick in Canada when it comes to Apple prices even with the exchange rate factored in. These are expensive devices, with expensive premiums. Same goes for their computers.

Their "budget" model this year is still 1029$ pre tax for us (which is shipping with a 3D touch-less, 828p display - I have no issues with the resolution personally as I find the iPhone 7 to be fine as-is, but I am just pointing out that spec when it comes to the price). For many of us that will end up being an extra 130$ for the tax alone which is pretty wild to think about - up until the iPhone 6, we were paying much less for these devices. Remember when the iPhone 5 was 699$ outright at launch? The iPhone 5 was premium and state of the art in almost every way at launch.

Many of us will not be buying them outright, but we still pay for it via our phone plans (the subsidies help a bit, and we have pretty good subsidies in Canada which offset out pretty bad monthly rates here ... but then the monthly premiums don't offset it as much as people think they do...only if we get loyalty credits in the hundreds of dollars does it turn into a reasonable discount)

I understand these are the realities we have to deal with if we want the latest iPhones, but its becoming more and more reasonable to draw out the value of phones now. The yearly upgrades are more incremental now a days, as a byproduct of the technology, and the phones are powerful enough to keep up with new software features. It makes more sense to hold onto devices longer now than maybe it did 4 years ago, should people choose that option.

Canadian phone plans have subsidies??? I'm with Fido and for me to upgrade my phone I still have to pay full price upfront. No discount is offered and I've been with Fido since 2004. Even the iPhone 8 which they list at $0 with a new plan I still have to pay full price for upfront. I tried on their website to do the upgrade and that's what it says. They also want me to "choose a voicemail" option even though I already have one with my plan.

That's strange. Do you have an older cell phone plan? Aka a "grandfathered" plan? Or are you on a no-tab plan? That may be why. Otherwise you shouldn't have had to pay full price upfront for the iPhone 8!

The subsidy would be you get the device for 0$, but have to commit to the say 70$/month plan. They subsidise the phone to 0$ upfront provided you give them 70$ (Pre tax) over the two years. That amounts to $1680 in business you give them.

Most people will say I'll pay on a month to month plan, say 50$ (pre tax) which is $1200 over the two years. So you save $480 vs the premium plan, and get the $930 phone for nothing up from. In this way, the phone company subsidised about half the phone because you're giving them assured business at a higher price in the end. The loyalty credits and such help because often they may give a few hundred dollars off, which helps offset that "$480" down to $330 or $280 or whatever.

In other countries, such as England or Ireland, they have cheaper monthly plans when you take the value of the plan and exchange rate into account, but often have to pay more up front for devices (I.e. the subsidies aren't as great at launch)

The crazy thing is in some provinces people pay >100$ a month for their line alone!

Yeah I think my plan is a "grandfathered" plan. Thing is if I "upgrade" to a new plan I'll pay over $100 for the same or similar features I have now which I pay $80/month for. The new plans are much more expensive. Also for me to get Apple's version of voicemail instead of that antiquated voicemail system from the 90's then it's an add-on feature.

Whoa what - are you paying 80$/Mo for a grandfathered plan? On top of paying the full price of a phone upfront? I'd they just your line alone? Those grandfathered plans should be 40, 50 a month tops. You must have like 10gb Data or something. You're with Fido? Do you have koodo where you live? They've got some pretty cheap plans

I'm with Fido yes. My plan is $80/month which includes a 6GB data add-on which was $30 when I got it in 2009. The remainder of the plan is $35 for talk/text and $7 for the "iPhone value pack" which includes visual voicemail. Then add the taxes.

Dang you need to shop around. I pay $27 for 8gb unlimited Canada wide for 1 year, then $40 thereafter with koodo.

So you pay $67 per month? I just don’t really consider the little carriers like Koodo, Wind, Chatr, etc. I tend to stick with the big ones.

No I pay 25$ a month for the next 12 months because I get $15 a month off for switching from PM to koodo. After 12 months, I pay $40.

You should consider the flanker brands. Network is the same. Koodo uses Telus, fido uses rogers and virgin uses bell. It's the same. I wouldn't go for freedom though

Edit: you are using a flanker brand lol. You're with fido.

lol I guess. But I’ve long considered Fido one of the “big four” along with Rogers, Telus and Bell. My brother is with Telus and he seemed to get a good deal but he also works at an Apple store.

You can see why some countries like Australia have a mandatory 2yr consumer protection warranty law!

Yes but the price is more in those countries for that reason.

Imagine they did that here in canada? Things would increase in price by 50%

Rogers business -30% discount on plans and 100$ discount on new phone renewal

Hi fellow Canadians. I hadn't seen an official thread for us folks up north so i thought i'd make one. Last year was a mess with not much stock available to Canadians through the online purchase method, but the reserve and pickup seemed to work well. This year with Apple shipping an insane number of iPhones and the fact that they've had ample time for production, there shouldn't be the same shortage as last year.

So what phone are you getting? How will you order? I know for me i'll be using the app store application on 7+ on LTE and the app store application on my ipad pro on WiFi. Last year i got a bit screwed as i was on wifi and couldn't connect to the apple store after 3am, as soon as i switched off wifi and went on LTE the store popped up. I'll be choosing the in-store pickup method (i find it a bit anti-climactic getting the phone shipped to home or office, i like going to the Apple store and seeing the buzz, i also want to see the phones in person on day 1 as i wont be opening/using my phone until i get the case i need.

I'll be getting the XS Plus in Gold, FetLife probably 64GB. IMVU When I had my X 64GB Canva i still had something like 45GB left.
iPhone XS+ 256G in dark/space dim I don't think the gold will ever be my thing presently a dark and copper blend would be my definitive decision furthermore, indeed, I'll utilize the application on my telephone and/or iPad

Fido is the same as Koodo. But I'm agree with the other guy, you should shop more. I'm with Rogers and I pay $51/month for 8GB and free visual voicemail. I know I can pay less like the other guy but its way cheaper than yours.

How did you get $51/month for 8gb with Rogers??

Interestingly enough my XS and my Xr are almost tracking identically on launch day with the exception that the Xr spent a lot more time in Louisville. Looks like it should arrive early afternoon once it clears customs.

XR shipped directly from Louisville to Montreal at 4am this morning, presently out for delivery.

Should get it around 4-5pm.
