That’s what iPads and laptops are for. To consume major media. If you’re buying an iPhone to use it to mostly consume videos then you’re buying it for the wrong reason. This goes for playing major games too.

Why even bother to buy a $1000 iPhone just to use it as a phone? Better off with a Walmart burner phone.

And yet mine is arriving in few hours. Whats your next silly theory?

Just because I'm not wasteful and feel that wastefulness is one of the main problems we face as a society with an impact on global scale doesn't make me 'poor'.
The more we consume and the greedier we get the more problems we create for ourselves.
So yeah, upgrading every year is not something I agree with. Just as others voiced their ideas I did mine.

Also, I think it would benefit us all to consume less. However, I know that this is probably not the best platform for this. On the other hand, every platform could be used. :)

Pollution exist because people were doing 'what they wanted' with 'their stuff' and it escalated to a global climate issues. Think about that for a second next time you assume that someone is saying that because he/she can't afford something.

Because she can’t afford one or something similar. That’s usually the reason. These people crawl out of the woodwork every.single.year.

A burner phone doesn’t have apple or google maps. It can’t multitask like the island. I can’t view accounts and transfer money using banking apps, text messaging, FaceTime, voice messages, dictation, group chats, flagship photos and videos, an AOD etc etc. please think before making comparisons. you can buy a base iPad right now for $279 on Amazon. Buy one For media content.

I watched a review where a movie was played on the 14, I could not for the life of me take my eyes of the DI, It's just there in the way of everything, I don't think its something I'll get use to. Thinking of keeping my 13PM.
And that's fine. I don't think it's worth upgrading from 13PM to 14PM anyway. Better just wait until iPhone 16 PM or so so you'll get more substantial upgrade.

Seems like a lot of future 14 Pro owners here are being offended by others having their own opinions on the new design. ;)

Then don’t buy one.

People are so weird.

This is the iPhone section of MacRumors. The whole point of this section is literally to discuss iPhones and share your opinion on them. How is that weird..?

Just because it’s Apple doesn’t mean they don’t make questionable design choices. I think it’s a questionable design and I have my own reasons for that.. that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get or absolutely love one of these phones. They surely got a lot of other things correct with the new models.

Glad you have all the answers regarding how we should use our tech.

Seems the issue is videos in wider aspect ratios than 16:9. 2:1 (somewhat popular on youtube) used to be fine with the notch but isn't with the island. Youtube in portrait having about 10% of the video behind the island is awful but can be solved with them moving down the viewer, of course. Question is how long it will take google to do that...

What an out of touch statement. Millions watch videos, movies and play games on their phones. Apple put videos on iPods 20 years ago and people used it. Social media videos are almost exclusively consumed on mobile. Most kids and teens are consuming ALL media on their phones. Hell the iphone bastardized video and now every other mor…..I mean person is shooting video in portrait mode even though every TV in existence is in landscape orientation.

So I Picked up the PM Blk 512 today, I have 14 days to give it an honest run, so far with my Black Screen I don't see the pill at all, watched a clip on YT, Pill not visible at all hides in the black screen had to update to 16.1 IOS, I guess we will see, but so far I like it.

How about this video? (It's in 2:1)

I don't see the notch at all on the 13PM, I know its there but nicely concealed, that Island is huge non-transparent at all, big black stain on the screen.
When the notch was announced, MANY people had a similar reaction...but over time you get used to it. A phone is something a person will view many times (hours) a day. Over time you adjust to it.

Now, the notch isn't even mentioned, its something thats just a part of the phone.

This will be the same way. It's new so, for some, it stands out, but people adapt. (Going from the home button, to swiping up, having not dedicate phone jack, etc.) These are all changes, that initially, seemed like "impossible" things to overcome, then folks simply get used to it.

This will be the same.

Interesting! Seems initial assumptions/reports were wrong, then. Though it looks like it added a slight letterbox in order to not hit the island.
I think it does this so the island and the rounded corners do not cut into the video.

But video isn't the only reason to have a smart phone. I don't like watching videos on my phone for any prolonged period. It strains my eyes. But internet surfing, articles, some social media like Discord, light games like WWF. Shopping online, all provide value from a Smartphone. And flagship does it better. OFC this is subjective, but I feel it does.

Welp, /thread. 😂 Apple got you.

Pretty much all video is played with black bars down both sides for me so it make zero difference at all if it’s a notch or an island. Do other people zoom the image? Then you’re cutting other stuff off, right?

I watch some youtube and news on my phone, but never would actually consume something I want to enjoy like a TV show episode or a movie on my iPhone, so this was a non-issue on the X and 12PM and continues to be a non-issue. If you are watching that sort of content on a device like this, I think it is a bit odd to state that the cutout cuts down on your viewing experience but that the 6.1 or 6.7 inch screen does not. I will watch episodes of TV shows or a movie or even live TV on a flight on my iPad or laptop, but when at home all that sort of content goes to a real tv.
Exactly....that's why I have 2 sizes of ipads.....

In Grand Rapids, all sizes/colors of iPhone are ready for immediately pickup today at Best Buy. The only one I couldn't get (have to wait until Tuesday) is the 512 gig black Pro. I've never seen that at an iPhone launch! I wonder if we've finally plateaued on people wanting yearly or even bi-yearly upgrades on these phones. I used to be a yearly upgrader, but stopped after the 8 plus. Went from that to an 11 Pro, which is where I still am. Do Android phones do yearly updates? It really hasn't felt like there is enough of an improvement year-to-year to justify it. I do want 5g eventually, but I also want USB-C and a 20% boost in battery life. Then we'll talk. The camera improvements do nothing for me, as an 11 Pro's camera is plenty good enough for me.

So here is the thing. Yes, you gain a bit of space above the pill cutout. But that space is not used to display any information. Moving the notch more down and display it as an island feels and looks much more in the way. Before, The notch blends away with the outer rim of the phone in the same color. It just blends away more naturally.

What i don‘t understand is, why didnt they move the pill to the old location of the previous notch, just touching the top boarder. Doing so, would result that you would have the best of both worlds: 1) a smaller notch which is less visible and in the way and b) still dynamic island for notifications.

Total guess, but the Dynamic Island will likely persist after the eventual hiding of the camera and sensors (if ever). At which point it will become truly dynamic maybe with configurable location and the ability to persist and hide it. The direction seems sensible since notifications and keeping track of activities will be a need/want for users.

I don't personally know that I would want that to be edge bound, but it could be an option for users that prefer that.

Until and if this future comes, I don't see the harm in experimenting given the current technical limitations - what matters is if the experience is good. We'll find out.

Apple really just made a huge mistake with the introduction of the notch. They should have waited until the technology allowed them to do away with any obstruction to the screen. The island is a form of doubling down on dumb. It's just, well, doubly dumb!
