Apple really just made a huge mistake with the introduction of the notch. They should have waited until the technology allowed them to do away with any obstruction to the screen. The island is a form of doubling down on dumb. It's just, well, doubly dumb!

Capitalism demands changes to keep the lines moving up.

I have never been a fan of the notch. Perhaps if the edges had blended better or something, but I have always disliked how the corners of the phone looked on either side - reminded me of horns or something.

I don’t know what I’ll think of the Dynamic Island (geez I can barely make myself type that, much less say it - they really could‘ve done better with naming it), but I like it better than the notch because I like that the edges/border of the screen are uniform all the way around.

I’ve toyed with keeping my 13 mini because honestly, I love it, but I have waited for a notchless phone since they introduced the notch, so I think I’m all in at this point.

So I Picked up the PM Blk 512 today, I have 14 days to give it an honest run, so far with my Black Screen I don't see the pill at all, watched a clip on YT, Pill not visible at all hides in the black screen had to update to 16.1 IOS, I guess we will see, but so far I like it.
lol

just don't drop it or scratch it by accident

It‘s either this : ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

this: (____)

probably next year for the IPhone15 we will get this:

It would be hilarious if they release an update with the ability to fill that dead space above the pill thus making it a notch 😂.

What an out of touch statement. Millions watch videos, movies and play games on their phones. Apple put videos on iPods 20 years ago and people used it. Social media videos are almost exclusively consumed on mobile. Most kids and teens are consuming ALL media on their phones. Hell the iphone bastardized video and now every other mor…..I mean person is shooting video in portrait mode even though every TV in existence is in landscape orientation.
OK let me try to fix this for you. First of all it gets a little much when you see duplicate posts about the DI getting in the way of video/gaming content. It can, much like the notch did. But no one is going to argue that you’re going to get the best video viewing and gaming experience on a laptop, tablet, or dedicated console. So the focus, I think, should not be making your phone be your dedicated media experience but something that’s going to just be a convenience when you’re on the road or on the go. You have to see it for what it is. Theres nothing out of touch about me. I got my first apple II computer back in the 80s And been walking hand in hand with tech before many were born or entering grade school.

What stable asset can you get in the current economy for $1000. A "blue chip" stock?
And the $1000 typically is a misnomer. If the poster has a 13 series, that phone has value, and unless they are passing it on to a family member, who then might be replacing a phone, which has value, etc., the new phone cost to them is only the delta from the $1000 to what they can get for their phone. If it is worth $700, the iterative upgrade is $300, or 30% of that. Just sayin'.
And even if you did invest, you could still just finance the phone and pay each month from the investment money and still possibly still have the principal or more in the end

Asthetics wise the pill looks worse to me, at least it's useful but seeing complaints it's obtrusive in video v notch.
If you really hated the notch can't imagine you would like a pill lol.
Agree on the island never seen one shaped like that haha

Most videos you'll be focusing on the middle of the screen anyway, I get it could be a distraction but not enough to make me cancel. Any video worth watching I'd stream to my TV or watch on my TV or Macbook.

And it's not like the "dynamic island" is going to be morphing as you're watching a movie and distracting you. It will be the smallest size at that time.

I don't see the notch at all on the 13PM, I know its there but nicely concealed, that Island is huge non-transparent at all, big black stain on the screen.
That's literally the same as the notch, if not a little less. I do agree I thought the new design would be better but when I saw a side by side, its almost the same as a notch except for the features of the island.

I imagine there are ways to minimize DI's presence.

Yeah, don't screw up. . . . oh, never mind, different DI 😂

Like I said I think, for me, it’s having the uniform edges around the screen - just looks more finished to me than the notch. I’ll see how I feel about it here soon I suppose since my 14 pro arrived about an hour ago.

Do you notice your nose at all in your peripheral vision?

Now you do? Well, that's what's happening with the Dynamic Island with you. The more you put importance to it, the more distracting it will seem.

I cancelled my pre-order. I've gotten the new iPhone every year back to the XR, but the camera upgrades seem mixed this year and most reviewers didn't seem to appreciate the AOD style of just dimming the lock screen.

Fair enough but that by logic a $1000 phone sounds ridiculous

I thought the notch was annoying until I saw the "island". It's such a distraction when you're watching a video and that damn "island" is right there! Meh I suppose I'll get over it it just like I did for the notch.

The difference is that the island cuts further down into the screen than the notch.

Not the full story.

Yes, the DI sits about 20px lower from the top of the screen, but the screens on the 14 pro/max are about the same number of pixels taller. The result is the same size safe area as before.

Videos should fit within that safe area just as they do for the notch, but apps may need to adjust for the new screen aspect ratio to fit properly and that will require a software update. It is possible to manually zoom a video to use the full width but doing so crops the top and bottom of a 16:9 video and that is what has been done on some early images I have seen. It makes it look like there is more impact than there really is..

Seeing the keynote that immediately caught my attention too. Fullsize videoplayback looks odd with the DI. The notch is way more elegant and less distracting.
That is not the default view for video. Normal video view is to fit to top and bottom and show letterbox on the sides. That is the safe are. That way you avoid the notch and the island. You have to manually zoom the video to fit the width to engage outside the safe area. Then the notch and island stand out. Your choice. Of course you are then cropping the top and bottom of the video when you do that.

On old TVs there was a thing called overscan. People didn’t like it when the video didn’t fill the TV screen edge to edge. The broadcasters used overscan mode which scaled the video to larger than the screen so there was never any black. It chopped things off near the edge of the video but at least there were no bars! 😆

Well, as a new 14 Pro Max owner. I can say all the fears about this dynamic island or whatever you wanna call the black spot on the screen that replaces the notch is the big nothing burger.

It doesn’t block video content. At least this is on YouTube and Amazon prime. If it does on some other app, then that sounds like the app is zooming in because with the dimensions of the screen, the notch or dynamic island depending on what phone you have is outside where the screen would be.

As to how it looks, I can’t really say yet. I think it’s more noticeable but that could be because it’s different and I’m noticing it. I got to the point where I never noticed the notch, so maybe this will be the same. I can’t say yet.

I have complaints but they’re all related to iOS 16 and not some hardware feature of this phone

I think this is the issue. People are zooming in so then the notch or dynamic island is blocking part of the screen. At that point a good chunk of the top and bottom of the screen is missing as well, so why would you watch it that way? I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

Any video worth watching I'd stream to my TV or watch on my TV or Macbook.Probably. People find the smallest things to nitpick before they’ve even used the phone, and even then, small things like that will set them off and say it’s the worst thing ever. We see it every year.
That’s for your use case. Many various types of users and scenarios. Don’t fall foul of thinking you speak for everyone.
Skip the 14 and buy an iPad for video. It will be a much better experience.

Personally I don’t watch anything on my iPhone besides some random YouTube clips.
Personally for you is fine. But you don’t speak for everyone. So many usage cases you need to let go of your myopic view of how an iPhone is used.
And the notch wasn’t in the way? lol
Of course it’s in the way and sucks for video. But there is a chance the black hole is even worse for video due to the space above it. Time will tell.
I've never watched a movie on my phone. That's what iPads and Macs are for. But to each their own.
At least you got the last sentence right. Everybody has a different situation. You shouldn’t assume for others.
if you cant notice the notch then i am sure DI wont be that intrusive to you!!
It’s possible it’s the opposite. Because of the space above showing content it may be even worse. Time will tell.

I posted a pic of the differences between the 13pm and 14pm on another thread basically on the same topic. 13pm has more vertical space as DI eats deeper into screen but 14pm has more horizontal screen as it’s wider. Interesting if you’re interested in this topic. Not interesting if you’re not. If you’re not, don’t assume everybody is you. This is such a common theme on so many threads on MRs. Expand your world!

I think it will need some side by sides to compare to get the full picture (hehe). If you’re not interested in this aspect then that’s fine, but some are.

Apple itself is advertising with fullscreen video, and thats what was shown in the keynote. You can defend it all you want but as soon as you use it in fullscreen, the DI looks way more intrusive than the notch. It reaches further out into the screen.
