I'm not sure if I agree that the 16" is not a 'new experience' especially for those that are used to 15" MBPs...

It is literally 1" more than same 15" screen that Apple has been using for O, at least 15 years at this point ?

It is definitely a 'wow' moment when you see this similarly sized machine to the Powerbook and MacBook Pro 15" devices; but with clearly MORE window space and a bigger screen.

I flirted with the 14" thinking "I'm definitely going to carry this around more" when in reality it felt like a downgrade from the 15". You're trading 'portability' for a more cramped space than the 15" laptops from before , where as the 16" is around the same size/weight with again, a clearly larger screen. In my book that's an upgrade ;):apple:

16“ if:
- working directly on the Macbook for longer than 2-3 hours is your priority.
- you have a large desk available where you can put it on
- mobility and travelling is not the highest priority

14“ if:
- you need a truly mobile workstation that you carry around a lot
- you don‘t work on the screen for longer than 2-3 hours
- when stationary, you‘re connected to a desk/screen/docking station

I almost certainly think that the ergonomics of the Macbook 16 "can be a problem for some. Because the Macbook is tall, the touchpad cannot be used in the same way as with older Macbooks.

Feeling uncomfortable using the touchpad on your Macbook 16 yet?
I mean used on the table.

The correct ergonomics of using the touchpad are explained here, but this one has a low profile. Of course, the hand can be supported by a book, for example.

Down in the photos
bad position because your wrist / carpal tunnel is tense and the right position is adjusted by the book

Do you find it too heavy to carry around? I’d love to buy the new 16” this time around but because I’m used to a 13” I’m worried it might be too big. Is it comfortable to use on your lap/sofa/bed?
Very comfortable on the lap and in bed - quite immersive to watch movies-on, especially with headphones and spatial audio. If you're walking around with it one handed, you do notice the weight so if its one hand and screen open, I tend to tip it up at an angle.

I genuinely don't find it much heavier than a 13/14" in a rucksack or messenger bag, its more the footprint than the weight which is restrictive when on the move.

Typing seems very subjective. I like the 14 & 16" but prefer the larger area to rest my palms/wrists on the 16.

Why does nobody use external BT keyboards? ??‍♂️
One of the best parts of the MacBook is the keyboard. Typing on it is so satisfying. The few times I dock it I do use the keychron k2. Mechanical, BT, and can switch between windows & Mac (and readily available on amazon prime).

Idk if this helps but I took a photo yesterday.

I really think this decision is more obvious once you see them in person. Only you can answer what your needs are and what you prioritize.

I have a 16" 2019 and I was already over the footprint and weight of it. The new one is even heavier and thicker. For the amount of traveling I do it's a hard pass for me.

I live in bip city so I always have to carry my gear with me. I never leave anything in my car. I already learned my lesson the hard way. The 16" sticks out like a sore thumb in public. 14" is more inconspicuous. Theft and robbery is unfortunately a big problem as of late.

I would prefer to use a BT keyboard because then I can have a numeric keypad, but the problem for me, is it puts you too far away from the screen.
I guess that makes sense. For me, my 14" is docked to an external monitor so it's not really an issue...plus it keeps the greasy stains off of the actual laptop keys. I think this new all-black design shows a lot of the grime and dirt more easily.

I worked for several months on a 15" MBP where I placed it at a reasonable height and distance using an mStand360, and Magic peripherals. I won't say getting a larger screen didn't make a positive difference, but it was surprisingly useful even for full work days - and longer at crunch time.

It's not the same of course, but I do have the 2019 Intel-based 16" Macbook Pro, and the M1 MacBook Air. I find the MacBook Air better to type on. The keys feel more tactile, and I'm less likely to accidentally touch the smaller trackpad.

Ya I really dislike the massive touchpad on the 16". It just gets in the way.

Yup... 14" is such an awesome size as a device, but that damn massive, gorgeous screen on the 16"!!! I have both here in front of me and I can not decide for the life of me. It's incredibly frustrating.
My feelings exactly!
