I ordered now the 16 inch MBP, the other Macbooks seemed a little bit too small.
Do you think Apple Care is necessary? I don’t really plan to carry it around.
Thanks all for your replies.
An external monitor is not an option because I don't have the space for it.

I will go to the next Apple store and check the size differences.

Well, one issue and Applecare + has paid off, for me when spending that amount of money 299 more for 3 years with that kinda warranty is a no-brain.
For 8.5 dollars a month you have peace of mind, if you drop it or if the screen cracks it would cost much more.

You might not plan to carry it around, but if you need to and it happens on that very one time it's a bummer, and things can happen home too, it's why they are called accidents.

Hope this helps.

I just got in the 16" yesterday. Ordered 16" M1 Pro 10/16/16, 16GB, 2TB. I came from a mid-2011 13" MBA. I'm not going to say that the weight difference isn't noticeable, but I will say that compared to a 11 year old MBA, the weight difference is negligible. My wife has the 2019 16" as well. I notice no difference in weight.

Most of my work will be at my desk, connected to a KVM that is wired to my 24" Dell U2412M, so I'm in the same boat as you.. but for the portability, for as occasional as I might travel, the weight will be roughly negligible compared to what I've carried before.

BL.
thanks for the hands on feedback. I've never really had a problem with my 15 size and weight, so if only a slight increase in weight then probably not too bad. I get the feeling I will find the 14" too small with all my palettes etc open so we shall see after I've demoed in store.

Well, for me that was the case, the first two days I loved the 16", and I know it's a better machine, then I realized I wasn't using it as a laptop as much as I did with the 14" due to its footprint, even around the house, but you have to be aware I've been using 13" form factor since 2008-2009, not exactly the same kind of change you'll be experiencing, that's why I'm settled with 14", but that's just me.

Hence the reason I think you'll be more used to the bigger shape/size given you're coming from a 15", so the footprint shouldn't impact you that much as it did to me. And yes, I do think these things have to be tested more than in-store, cause you can't understand proportions 100% with those big tables or how it will fit in your house/backpacks/etc, kinda similar as with shoes, you try them at the store, they're super cool, then 2 weeks later you realize that they don't adapt to your feet and/or are not as comfortable as you first tried, then you wish you could change them, but again, that's just me.
If you physically cannot handle the 16, then clearly get the 14.

My friend and I met last night.

I brought my 14" MacBook Pro. She brought her 16" MacBook Pro.

We left the two laptops in the bedroom with rose petals on the bed, some champagne on the rocks, and some candles burning.

We opened up the room in the morning to the discovery of a new 15" MacBook for all to enjoy in 2023.

I can handle it, but it's not as comfortable/safe to use to me as with the small one, the new 14" came yesterday and after some minutes I felt at "home" again. I didn't had to remove the 16" for a last glance from its box to know it was going back, despite being a superb machine.

LOL. Jokes aside, I think a 15" model would have been perfect for this lineup, it seems a lot of us were right at the middle in terms of footprint/screen/benefits/cons to make a serious decision.

HA! I do think a 15" and a larger 17" would have been the better options. A 15" would have been the sweet spot with 17" for those that want a huge display.

Apologies if I’m repeating others, but can anyone comment on how the 16” is for use on a lap?

I have one on order right now (but kind of waffling on canceling). I would be using it for small personal web dev projects/learning. Maybe some app development (again just for learning) if I get ambitious.

I am a full time software engineer and I find that I do NOT want to sit at my office desk during my personal time at all. I’d much rather keep my office for (paid) work and do any personal computer work on the couch/kitchen table.

So my thinking is even though I LOVE the look of the 14”, the 16” is probably the better buy for my purposes because I don’t want to feel like I need to be chained to my desk and external monitors. I have a 16” 2019 intel MBP for work right now that I have zero issues using on my lap. Safe to assume the 16” M1 Pro won’t feel that much heavier? Except for occasional travel to visit parents this computer will never leave my house so portability around the house is my only concern. I really WISH my usecase worked with the 14” screen. From a purely aesthetic point, I think that laptop looks amazing and the 16” is just ok. Which is why I am waffling.

Any opinions on this from a "road warrior" viewpoint? I currently have a 2019 MBP 13in which is ideal for travel. I was on the road a lot, pre-lockdown flying all over Europe so portability is key and the fact on this as well, most laptop bags only take 14 in max laptops. I currently have an excellent Tumi bag which I've had for years and Travel is really coming back now and I'll be on the road a lot.

While the 14in would be the supposed choice, I can see the attraction of a 16in laptop for working on word and PDF contracts etc and for downtime in hotels when I watch movies or sports with the better speakers. Is the 16in a pain in the ass to bring with you on the road? I'm not someone who pulls the laptop out on flights so that's not an issue.

I'm thinking about an MI MBP as I want to upgrade my iMac and they're not making them anymore so was going to get the Mac mini or Studio with the ASD. But now I'm thinking MBP and use that with the ASD when home and then take the MBP on the road when I gave to.

Just the offer a counterpoint the speakers on the 14 inch are no slouches. I was shocked at how good they were compared to other laptop speakers I've heard in the past.

I have the 16 and also the 27 display. Maybe I could live with the 14 if the display existed in October, but every time I disconnect this thing form display and get into bed with it, I find the screen suitable to what I want to do. To be honest with myself, even the MacBook Air isnt really portable or very comfortable so the bulky 14" isn't either. The only MacBook size and weight for on the go is the 12 inch 2 lb MacBook am im hoping this is the new Air coming out.

I think the 14" is for someone who needs all the ports and power but in the smallest physical size. Maybe also for someone who connects the Mac to the 27 Display when not on the couch or on the go. Maybe the 14 would be a little bit more comfortable in bed on on lap. But I jsut prefer to have the bigger screen. You'd have to try both with your real life scenarios to know what is for you. My ideal choices are 27 display, MacBook Pro 16 and MacBook 12 for travel. Ive tested all these long term and im firm on my beliefs.

To me portable means I can comfortably place it on the airplane tray table with screen properly opened. I can also grab and hold it what one hand. walk wiht it in one hand and take it in and out of bags with one hand without any worries of slipping. That 12" was with me all over the USA for 3 years. One hand grab out of a little bag, quick type report on any small random table, one hand slip into little bag. its like handling a small thin book.

My next concern after choosing size is colour! Silver or space grey? Current 2016 mbp is space grey and works well with my SG keyboard/mouse and LG 27“ but planning to change for Studio display and silver/black keyboard. Decisions, decisions!

IMHO, despite I do like the Space Gray a lot, and I have chosen it in 14" and 16" versions ... I do have to say that whenever I saw the 16" format in-store, the silver makes it visually smaller, so more appealing to grab and to handle, but this is just my opinion.

So it works without Thunderbolt cable now? Oh I forgot - now there's Universal Control...

I've got the 16" and I absolutely love it. Screen is big enough to be a primary display but it's still very portable, the battery life on mine (non-max) is a gamechanger too. Speakers are insane, plus the 140w Fast charging, people don't seem to mention that much but you can go from 10% to like mid 60% in half an hour, and that will give you many hours more use. There's also better thermal capacity in the 16", I've heard my fan a couple of times but it was super quiet, plus the chassis never gets too hot. Sorry, bit of a flurry here but I wanted to write a hurred love letter to my 16", this thing is incredible

Co-worker has a 16, I can't imagine lugging it around, it's pretty hefty. For mostly stationary work I totally get it. I travel quite a bit and I can't remember the last time I saw a laptop computer being used on an airplane tray. I suppose for work some people have to, but in that case I'd pick a 13" or anything else.

I second this. I don't buy apple care on my smaller purchases but on a $4K purchase I'm going to buy the AC+
