I knew it was larger but quite shocking how big it is. I get those who say it’s not portable enough for them.
Which are you going to keep finally? I'm starting to lean again back to 14", due to what you just said. After a week owning the 16" ... I don't feel myself using it as a laptop as much as I did with the 14" ... so I still have to work my bed 100%, but I can feel that portability lack, even just around the house, and it's a shame, cause everything is "better" with the 16"

Knowing myself, despite a lot of ppl will point first screen, battery or speakers, I know the thing I'm going to regret the most is the thermals, cause I'm a temperature obsessed with my machines (I've been watercooling all my desktops since 2008) ... but sacrificing that in order to not use it that much as a laptop, is a red flag to me.

Unless you are going to use it at high load all the time, thermals is no issue with 14”.

I’m keeping the 16 inch

I think the positives outweigh the cons to be honest. For my usage it works well even with the bigger size. I’ve gotten used to the size now where I think I would struggle going back to the 14 inch

Yup, I saw the M1 Pro 14" 16GPU vs M1 Max 16" 32GPU were practically the same when doing similar tasks, a little bit colder on the 16" but that could be due to ambients. Let's see how this plays with the 14" M1 Max 24GPU

That's good man, for me, despite knowing it's a best machine, after 13 years of 13" footprint, it's being hard to get used to, even when placing on the table and or other places, due to the weight/size footprint, makes me feel insecure, how crappy muscle memory can be sometimes. In the other hand, when working/using the machine in tiny places, I do feel I have to stretch my arms too much, in the couch it wins, but in other places, lacks that "portable" thing, at least to me.

I talked with my GF about it and she clearly sees I'm not using it as I did with the 14", which is a shame as I mentioned.

FWIW, I have 14” Max with 32GPU and have no thermal issues whatsoever. The fans usually stay off. Now, I mostly do office stuff with some VM or Docker containers running, and only occasionally edit videos in Final Cut Pro.

Really grateful you're posting this information!!! I will most do software engineering stuff, with VM and Docker too, node with js/ts, go and other usual suspects as k8s for managing DBs and other pods ... and also a lot of Microsoft software open (VSCode, Teams, Outlook ...) with the usual youtube/spotify combo as well as lots of tabs with FF and/or Safari, and also, lurking around Figma.

Rest of its uses will be editing photos and doing music stuff with GarageBand/Ableton and maybe Logic ... of course, a little bit of gaming, but that will be its marginal use since I'm retiring the hackintosh machine to be the "Steam Link" machine for the house :)

In my case I've been with the 14" one for 3 months, the tap-to-click problem bothers me quite a bit and nothing that apple solves, which has led me to buy the 16" one, in addition to this, because of the size of the screen that is much better and more comfortable than the 14" one (specially for my age).

Portability shouldn't be a problem, I never carry the charger or cables, just the computer, so I hope I don't regret the change. Plus, the big screen allow me work with several windows without a second display. Thermals are a little issue in 14" too.

you will have less regret sticking with the 16 over the 14 than 14 over 16.

sometimes you have to decide what's right for you and do a list of pros and cons. For me the pros really did outweigh the cons.

Yeah, I was in my last day of the return window for the 14 inch I just glad I managed to get in time otherwise I would have stuck with the 14 inch and felt what if on the 16 inch.

Yup, that "what if" is important, I think you need to try in your everyday life if the device suits for you, that's why they have the 14-day return period, I wasn't planning to try the big boy, but it happened .. and as you mentioned above, sometimes you have to decide what's right for you, and even after this week, my heart is still with the 14inch ... so thinking to start to return the big boy and wait for my beloved form factor again (at the end, I had the M1 Pro 14" for 2 months and I loved every second of it ... not happening with the 16" despite I know it's better, humans ... 😂)

Happy you got it! Enjoy your computer! :)

Hi Apple enthusiasts :)

Is there a big difference between the Macbook Airs screen and Pro 16?
I have bad eyesight and need big letters and buttons. But I also don't need the extra power from the Pro models. I only do basic tasks such as web browsing, watching videos and chatting. Portability is not very important for me, I would mainly use it as a desktop replacement.

What is your opinion?

At the moment I'm using a 14 inch Windows laptop with 1440p resolution (scale set to 200%).

Hi,

My wife has an M1 MacBook Air and I have a 16" Pro, for sure the difference is very noticeable.
However, it's more than twice the price. If you don't need the extra performance and will use it as a desktop, maybe it is worth putting the extra money on an external monitor and going for the Air?

Well the base air is like 2,500 cheaper than the base 16 inch pro. So totally depends on your price range but if it will last you a long time it might be worth it if you want the bigger screen

Thanks all for your replies.
An external monitor is not an option because I don't have the space for it.

I will go to the next Apple store and check the size differences.

I did exactly that.

For my private (non day job) use, I went with a MBA M1 16G/1TB Refurbished and replaced my old Dell 25" with a Dell 27" 4K monitor with USB-C PD. Awesome combination. For my use case: Typical office stuff, light-weight software development, a bit video editing etc., the MBA M1 handles that with ease. It's even faster than my new AMD 5600G based build (I still need Windows x64) when compiling Java projects and this, without a fan.

For my use case, I don't miss the extra ports, I don't miss the 1080p webcam, I don't miss the extra screen size, cause most of the time it's in clamshell with the new 4K monitor.

Size is definitely a factor for making a decision, but there could be some HW advantages to the 16" over the 14".
Yes. The 16" has the "High-Performance Mode" whereas the 14" does not. In short, this mode puts the CPU to overdrive at the expense of reduced battery run-time and makes the fans run louder.

To piggyback off of this thread, I'm now trying to decide whether to upgrade to a 16". I currently have a 14", but I discovered recently that I could really stand to use some more RAM and wanted to upgrade to 32GB, but now trying to decide if I should use the opportunity to upgrade screen sizes too.

I rarely use my laptop on the go and would mostly be plugged in if so. I'm 90% plugged into a monitor in clamshell mode and just need the laptop for the occasional trip where I need my computer with me.

Sounds like a nice way of picking the 16 inch with 32GB.
