It's an pro workstation so what is so bad about an voodoo like loop back cable linked to an add in pci-e card? even if you need to hide it an big case?

The mac pro is an workstation and other workstations are setup that way.

Or be like server boards and have an low video chip on the pci bus as on board video. Then you have TB with video out and also have video cards that are just video out.
In that case if you’re going to say that all the hard work is offloaded somewhere else, an iPhone is a workstation too.

Top of the Line? I would argue that the MacBook Pro is the ENTIRE line of computers that Apple currently makes. All other lines appear to be dead ( including AirPorts, Time Capsules and Monitors ). And Cook can't be bothered with any device more than 0.5" thick.
So true, and so sad...:(

Thank you. By the way, it's "Ph.D.", not "PH.D.", which I would presume someone who has earned one would know.

Choose your time if you like. For now, you can still buy laptops with many high-performance replaceable and upgrade-able components. They may weigh 8 lbs and have 3 hours of battery life even if you aren't playing Doom, though. But come back in a few years and tell us how many new laptops are upgrade-able at all. This isn't an Apple trend, it's an industry trend. The laggards just haven't realized it yet.

Watching the trends of the newer laptops, you may be correct.

I went into a brand name store and they had two sections of laptops and desktops. One section in the front of the store were all of the "new" laptops and desktops, in the back of the store were "used" laptops and desktops. I looked at the "new" laptops and desktops and guess what?.....The newer ones mostly were as Ph.D stated...none or hardly upgradable. The "used" or "old" ones...Were upgradable...BUT the CPUs usually were not....so not really worth it to upgrade really...

I think the writing is on the wall...
