What is everyone getting so hot and bothered about. The raggedy/retro/vintage/worn look is Haute Couture. Apple is just keeping you fashionable. If anything, they should raise their prices for being your Couturier for all things in vogue, thereby making you fancy.

I am cold and unbothered. :)

I wonder if Apple, when considering the cancellation of leather case production in lieu of FineWoven, considered that a FineWoven case will likely only last a quarter of the time of the leather. E.G that the average consumer would need to buy 4 of the new cases for every one leather case.

I also wonder if they estimated the carbon footprint associated with lots of irritated customers sending or taking the FineWoven tat back to Apple when they realise that it's about as durable as a lettuce leaf.

The cynic in me feels that Apple only do things to positively influence their profit margin. They like to portray that they are being responsible and progressive, but everything responsible and progressive saves Apple money (removing ports from Macbooks, headphone jacks from iPhones, not including chargers in iPhone boxes, discontinuing leather cases etc etc).

Got the pacific blue one and it looks terrible out of the box. I was so disappointed, what a shame Apple!
It's insulting paying this amount for this piece of trash.
I was in line in the store with other five people returning the exact cases, how it's even possible this was approved by Apple quality staff?
Truly exist better options on eBay and amazon by 5 USD.

Yes, it’s called greenwashing and Apole has mastered this art form. They may no longer sell leather products, but they will still shear their willing sheep consumers.

If someone buys four of these they need their head checked

They are still taking a political stand on the "issue". Their video with "mother nature" insulting the man wearing a leather jacket is an insult to those who like to wear leather and a wink to the propenents of "climate change".

No, they TOOK a stand a while ago and have been following through on it for some time and are reporting the results.

It's "clever" that you try to "wrap" it up in "politics" and "scare quotes" in order to minimize what they've done so far, but the reality that's swept across North America alone in the past couple of years weighed against you being insulted for wearing a leather jacket? that's you playing politics, not Apple.

Yeah, because using lightning cables until "AD 3000" in the Apple would work out, while watching the rest of the tech world moving on.

Sorry, but the day of trashing these lightning cables would have come the one or the other way, just bring em to a recycling yard near you and don't simply trash em.

It's Apple fault for not pushing USB-C earlier to their products, pure money grab of their side by stretching the life time of lightning. They could have included "USB-A to Lightning" cables with all their recent products, which is not incompatible with the BILLIONS of USB-A type Apple Chargers people already have in their drawer, or simply let you choose the one that fits most.

Now they are trying to money grab with USB-C cable speed limits, and green washing with fine-woven cases.
Same goes to glued and not replaceable hardware components in Apple devices.

Yeah, this is how environment friendly Apple is, almost zero!

Get a USB-A to C cable -- or use one you probably already have -- and use that to charge your damned phone.

Did they not test these for durability or worse, how did they still go ahead with it 😵‍💫
The moment they announced this “ new “ material. Which by the way isn’t new. Cars have been using this exact material for decades now. It’s not durable it’s not easy to clean and most everyone reading this has this stuff in their car. It’s super cheap and not very durable.
I said this stuff was gonna be bunk and guess what? It is.

You know how when you stain the seat in your car and you have to scrub and scrub to get the stain out and it pulls color out of the material and weakens it noticeably? Well now image holding it non stop with dirty hands. And imagine paying premium leather prices for a material the cheapest cars on the planet cover their insides with.

Only at Apple people, only at Apple.

I don't think they are in a position to have an opinion on the matter.
The leather we use for belts and gloves and everything else. It’s made from livestock used for food. Or from cows that have died. They don’t just kill the cows for their leather and dispose of the body. Almost every single piece of the animal is used and not wasted.
If you’re not into eating meat, I understand that and respect your personal decision. But no part of the animal goes to waste. It’s actually a very sustainable method. It sucks an animal dies in the process. But being vegan or vegetarian is without its issues.
In order to farm on scale it displaces hundreds of millions of animals. The chemicals used for high crop yield kills every insect and animal in the area. The greens you eat, unless grown by yourself in your own garden are miles and miles away from being cruelty free.

Here is a study from Yale university. One of , if not the most prestigious academia on the planet itself have said agriculture its self will eventually displace 90% of all wildlife. Leading to the death of billions of animals. And an all a vegan , vegetarian lifestyle is harsher on the planet than being an omnivore.

The sad thing is that I now spend a lot of time and money to find a replacement for the simple old (and none too good) Leather Case. From FW (looks bad from the reviews) to Native Union (no real buttons, what?) to Ryan London (thicker leather) to ... whatever I may find that is simple, not too thick, has working buttons and does offer strong MagSafe :-D it is now a search for a solid replacement. I could totally live with 1:1 the old case with pleather, like the Yatay Native Union uses.
When you find out, please let me know. It has to have good buttons and it has to have a thin enough back so that the MagSafe magnet to an adapter is really strong.

These two things I want to know about, but people rarely mention these things, particularly the magnet strength.

I just saw part of Apple's nauseating mother nature commercial. It's a naked political statement full stop. The "phasing out" man in leather jacket bit was especially bad because they couldn't have used anyone other than a white man to play that part.
There's nothing wrong with selling leather goods. In fact it's probably better for the environment to use the entire parts of animals that are commercially raised for food. It also improves the humane aspect of the industry because food animals carry "scars" on their hide which affect the hide's value. An animal that suffers less injury while being raised will produce a more valuable hide.
Funny to hear people on here admit they eat meat but support Apple's decision to remove leather from their accessory line. An honest NPC is better than a liar I guess.

What’s wrong with leather anyway?! It’s a byproduct of the tonnes of beef we all eat. I’d rather leather continue to be made than it go to waste… we’re still eating beef and the cattle are dying in any case. Bring back leather!
You answered it yourself. :) There's nothing at all wrong with leather.

As to Apple’s reasoning? Well, answer lies somewhere in the realm between virtue signaling and money.

A case that's more fragile than the phone it protects ;)

Perhaps this is Apples attempt to encourage the ultimate sustainability - don't buy a case
Apple (probably): Don’t buy a case. Then buy a new $1,000 phone when the glass cracks. Stonks.

"Felt cheap almost like cardboard."

Lol, what do they have against cardboard? I heard last week that new BMW BEVs (based on the Neue Klasse prototype they recently shared) could introduce some interior trim parts made from paper. Who wouldn't want a $75,000 car with fine Corinthian cardboard?

(RIP Ricardo Montalban)

By all accounts? Can you find any accounts? I'm just pulling the first few accounts I can find that look like they'd come from pro-vegan sources:

"Vegan leather does not last as long as real leather; it has only one-third of the life expectancy, so keep that in mind when choosing a product to buy."

"Vegan leather is far less durable than real leather."
Leaving aside the novelty of pineapple clothes, most "vegan leather" is really PVC wrap which seems like a poor choice over a discarded animal hide.
there's different quality tiers of vegan leather, just like there's different quality tiers of real leather. you can have vegan leather that is treated with a coating and has multiple layers that would last for years. All tesla cars use vegan leather as an example. they're all fine. easy to clean. easy to patch. no scaled complaints since it launched in 2019.

i'm not making a statement that vegan leather is as amazing as real leather. i'm just saying, it's more durable than can't scratch and looks like crap in day 1 like what apple is launching here. although vegan leather... is still plastic. i suppose maybe you can make it with recycled plastic?

this thread has been immensely entertaining and enlightening.

i have enjoyed using apple's leather cases. age well. feel great in the hand. nice.
i could make the point that leather has been considered for centuries to be sustainable well before the term sustainable began to be used.
i own a great number of cordovan leather products: shoes, belts, wallets.

and i think that there is still a case to be made for smaller sized, branded leather companies that can make leather products in a sustainable way.

but but i'm glad apple is moving beyond leather.
large scale enterprises ( apple; chinese case companies. etc.) should be moving quicker towards accomplishing all of the SDGs.

thank god apple is located in california. a state that leads the world in new environmentally friendly standards.

think different, people.

I simply pointed out that your assertion that old-time Apple products were better than today's offerings isn't supported by my extensive experience or by the many people I know who've also used Apple products for decades. You've provided no factual counter-argument other than saying I'm confused and suggesting Apple has no pride in what they sell. This doesn't mean Apple doesn't misstep — the cases that are the subject of this thread may be a case in point — but the people I know who work for Apple are genuinely proud of the company.
Neither of us are providing any factual arguments. Both of us are stating our perceived view of the company. We simply disagree.

If you are worried about leather from meat industry, speed up creation of artificial meat… which is still overpriced and almost not available to buy.

Can’t wait to have a steak production at home as it can be done with vegetables in hydroponics 😅

But about cases, Apple loses main benefit over AliExpress - quality which was way way better on original bands, cases and other accessories. I will laugh my ass if knockoff will be better quality 🤣
