I was just about to buy the Jetech one off amazon but I’ll hold off for now.

Has anyone tried the soft film ones (is not tempered glass)? I wonder if they would do the job until we can get compatible glass ones for the new iPads.

I have the JeTech one right however I'm still waiting for my iPad Pro, will update you though.

I’m very keen to hear how you get along. I have one of these on order, but I won’t get it until next week sometime. Meanwhile my new iPad Pro is still wrapped up in its box :(

I have used skins and screen savers on all my Apple devices for years. Never questioned getting them. I am now wondering if it really is necessary to have one? Especially on an iPad Pro? A phone in your pocket against keys or a similar situation? Are these new screens really that susceptible to scratches? Those of you using screen protectors on an iPad do you have it in a case or folio? Will the Apple Pencil scratch it?

I’ve always just felt better about having a screen protector. Especially when using the Apple Pencil.

Yeah me too. But I must admit, I’m now questioning whether I should try going without for the first time, especially given the issues people are having with the screen protectors on the new iPad Pro. I have two different types of protector on order, but they’re going to take 1-2 weeks to get here. I don’t know if I can last that long without opening my new toy!!

Seems many people don’t use protectors for their iPad pros. I’d be keen to see a poll of how many do (and don’t), and how many have had issues with scratching from using the Apple Pencil.

FWIW...I always use a case/sleeve/folio to protect the iPad. This IPP will be in the Apple keyboard folio.

I held off on buying the 11 inch today specifically because no one sells cases and glass in stores. Then I read about the anti glare coating and special glass that is 'ruined' by putting glass on top of it. I am one that has ALWAYS had glass on everything, or plastic back in the day. I wouldn't use any new touchscreen device without having a screen protector on out of the box.

Now getting the Apple watch 4 recently, I went without a protector as they are quite annoying on the watch and often peel off. I traded off by getting applecare+ for it. I'm highly considering the same with the new iPad Pro 11.

One thing I'm highly afraid of is getting the pencil and ruining the screen by rubbing the same areas over and over. I actually can't imagine how it won't scratch using the pencil to be honest.

You raise a good point about the Apple Watch. I have no protection on mine, and after two years of heavy use it has no scratches!!

I did get Apple care for my new IPP, so that is always a backup I guess.

Supposed to be today, right now it's 6:17 and Apple has sent me a email saying my delivery may be late. Still holding onto some hope.

Yes, I would think that over time Apple Pencil use would have an effect on the integrity of the screen coating. Who knows, maybe another sneaky planned obsolescence move by Apple. I sure hope not. Maybe we will see some news pop up about this and maybe someone will release some glass that actually works...?

Illustrator using a Pro and Pencil every day for two years with no screen protector: zero scratches. I don't have a particularly light hand when shading or stippling either.

I'm not encouraging anyone to avoid screen protectors but these screens can handle the Pencil under heavy use without damage.

Are there not even any fine scratches on your screen if you look at it while turned off and at an angle?

Nope. I've held it up to the light at an angle. Not scratched. I always wipe the screen and Pencil tip with a microfiber cloth before I use it.

Again, not discouraging anyone. Just offering my experience for what it's worth.

Thanks for your input. I may have no choice with this new iPad except to go bare.

Thank you for your reply. The other thing I’ve wondered with a folio case, could the friction of movement if something such as a crumb or a small object was stuck inside could cause abrasion and scratch the screen. I’m a perfection when it comes to my devices. My ten year old iPhone 3G is still in mint condition.

I know this may be a difficult question. Would you suggest the pencil to someone who is not an artist or illustrator?

Why do people use screen protectors on a tablet? It's not been carried in your pocket with keys or coins.
Because we feel better about having it protected.

I’m also a perfectionist with a serious case of OCD. LOL ☺️

For me? Because I'm paranoid . . . Why? Because my wife's iPad Air 2 that I purchased for her back in early 2015 shows wear in its anti-reflective coating and she has had an Apple Smart Cover on it since day 1. She carries the tablet in her backpack everywhere she goes. How or why the coating has worn I don't know but I can see clearly on the tablet's surface where the wearing surfaces are and the coating is still in great shape in the area where the grooved hinges are in the cover.

This is most likely the exception rather than the rule as clearly many of you have zero issues but nonetheless it is an observation that I've made and therefore I planned accordingly when I jumped into the iPad realm myself earlier this year. Thus far the tempered glass screen protector on my 2nd gen 12.9 hasn't given me any problems and I'm comfortable with the fact that if I ever need to I can remove it and find a pristine screen surface underneath. I truly view tempered glass protectors in that way - a sacrificial wearing surface...provided that they otherwise do not hinder the use of the device.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. It gives me much more confidence to finally use my IPP without a protector.

Funnily enough...I just checked the glass protector on my 12 month old iPhone X. Not a scratch to be seen, and I only use an apple leather rear cover for the phone. Not sure if the glass on the protectors are considerably more durable than the glass used for the IPP screens, but pretty damn impressive.

I’ve often wondered why Apple doesn’t sell screen protectors for iPads, be it theirs or third party.

I've always used Smart Cover style cases (except the cheap third party ones off Amazon) and haven't had any issues with them. I think if the screen is designed for a Pencil scraping across the surface, it could handle a crumb in the cover.

I'm very careful with my devices too. Especially Apple since they're so expensive. I always get a little extra paranoid when I have something new. But I've also learned from six years of owning iPads and two of drawing on one that these devices really are designed to be used and can handle what you throw at them. I treat my iPad well but I also carry it everywhere since it's my sketchbook. It's certainly more rugged than it looks. So is the Pencil for that matter. I tossed mine in my bag every morning without a single thought. Tip remained pristine.

I think there's a happy medium between being careful to the point of being afraid to use a device under normal circumstances and tossing it around like it's confetti.

I don't know about recommending the Pencil. Its main uses are by artists, photographers, and people who do a lot of longhand writing/note taking. It's one of those things where the need should lead to a purchase rather than a purchase trying to find a need. If that makes sense.
