Plus, this app is much more polished than Ping. I have both and use both, and this one is much more enjoyable to use.
Wow you guys are harsh. It's free texting, what more can you want?
The other "BBM for iPhone" app, Ping! got an awesome name. It's cute, people can say "Ping me later". It may seem shallow but a good name for your app goes a long way.
Yep, that's exactly what I've been emphasizing too. We shall see.I'm going to give you a little constructive criticism here, don't take it the wrong way. The name for your app, doesn't make any sense.

LOL, every time i think i should change the name, i end up spending my time fixing bugs and adding feature into the app
true, "ping me later" or "send me a ping" sounds awesome. props to Gary for thinking of that name and using it. my only concern with using a name like that would be an existing trademark. but maybe i am just too paranoid.
plus, i am sure when people first heard the name yahoo or google or twitter they said "wtf kind of name is that" .. not to compare myself with any of those companies. just saying name matters, but a good and quality product matters more.
WhatsApp seems kinda disorganized and unnecessarily cluttered.
I mean, why WhatsApp? What is App? The problem isn't that Ping has a great name, but WhatsApp is confusing.
what is the first thing you usually say to a friend? i usually say "What's Up"
get it now?
ok people, you all need have a meeting, talk amongst yourself and decide which one you want: do you want feature or do you want simplicity. because it is very rarely that you can get both... (and users keep on asking for features, which means more options and settings and bells and whistles)
Dear Jacob, please, don't be discouraged by some of our negative replies. I (and many others, I'm sure) value your hard work and want you to be successful in your doings. WhatsApp is an excellent app. Keep up the good work!thanks! people have no idea how much sweat, blood, and tears goes into an app like this.
both whatsapp and ping are great tools and both solve the problem of sms cost, just from different angles.
Why didn't you call it "What's Up?" then? It's not a very good name if you have to explain it...
WhatsApp and What's Up wordplay was clear to me right away. However, I still think it's a silly name. If I were you, I'd sit down and spend some time thinking of a different name for your app and company altogether. I know it's hard but doable."What's Up" is trademarked. plus i wanted to be cheeky and have some pun

In fact, I'm trying to come up with one for you right now.
WhatsApp Messenger. "WAM me" hmmm. Nope.
"wapp me" .. hehe
yeah, 'ping me' is definitely a killer, but i'd be totally paranoid about trademark holder of 'ping' getting a wind of this app. thats just me though
Actually, I've suggested the iPhone Messenger name before, but there's a reason why the developer doesn't fancy it too much.See when I hear WAPP, I think of WAP. And both WAM and WAPP me sound violent. Lol.
I'll keep trying to think of stuff too. Hehe. iPM would have been great but I don't think you can use iPhone in the name of a non-native apple app
"wapp me" .. hehe

Ping is trademarked?
pretty sure that a common word like ping would be trademarked...
yup, just checked -- it is. every common word in english is trademarked. which is why most companies come up with unique sounding names.
of course, would most trademark owners care about their name used in the iphone app? probably not. but i didn't want to take a chance and hence 'WhatsApp' was born.
Example: Apple is a trademark for Apple Inc. and also Apple Records. They operate on different businesses so it's perfectly legal.
there is this things called google

That is due to iTunes Music store. Since Apple started to work with music they started "stepping" on the music business thus infringing on Apple Records trademark. It wasn't a problem when Apple only sold computers.
