Plus, this app is much more polished than Ping. I have both and use both, and this one is much more enjoyable to use.

I'm going to give you a little constructive criticism here, don't take it the wrong way. The name for your app, doesn't make any sense.

The other "BBM for iPhone" app, Ping! got an awesome name. It's cute, people can say "Ping me later". It may seem shallow but a good name for your app goes a long way.

Wow you guys are harsh. It's free texting, what more can you want?

thanks! people have no idea how much sweat, blood, and tears goes into an app like this.

both whatsapp and ping are great tools and both solve the problem of sms cost, just from different angles.

LOL, every time i think i should change the name, i end up spending my time fixing bugs and adding feature into the app:)

true, "ping me later" or "send me a ping" sounds awesome. props to Gary for thinking of that name and using it. my only concern with using a name like that would be an existing trademark. but maybe i am just too paranoid.

plus, i am sure when people first heard the name yahoo or google or twitter they said "wtf kind of name is that" .. not to compare myself with any of those companies. just saying name matters, but a good and quality product matters more.

Yep, that's exactly what I've been emphasizing too. We shall see.

Another thing is simplicity; Ping! wins in this department hands down. WhatsApp seems kinda disorganized and unnecessarily cluttered. :(

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you should take out of improving the app, that is already great BTW. But if you find a better name I think it would be worth it for you to change it. I mean, why WhatsApp? What is App? The problem isn't that Ping has a great name, but WhatsApp is confusing.

ok people, you all need have a meeting, talk amongst yourself and decide which one you want: do you want feature or do you want simplicity. because it is very rarely that you can get both... (and users keep on asking for features, which means more options and settings and bells and whistles)

what is the first thing you usually say to a friend? i usually say "What's Up"

get it now?:)

Why didn't you call it "What's Up?" then? It's not a very good name if you have to explain it...

Well, you are developing for the iPhone, the phone that (some argue) is still missing features for the sake of simplicity.

Dear Jacob, please, don't be discouraged by some of our negative replies. I (and many others, I'm sure) value your hard work and want you to be successful in your doings. WhatsApp is an excellent app. Keep up the good work! ;):)

"What's Up" is trademarked. plus i wanted to be cheeky and have some pun:)
WhatsApp and What's Up wordplay was clear to me right away. However, I still think it's a silly name. If I were you, I'd sit down and spend some time thinking of a different name for your app and company altogether. I know it's hard but doable. ;)

In fact, I'm trying to come up with one for you right now. ;)

its not just the name itself. you also need to trademark it and get a domain for it. if domain is taken, you might have pay $$$ some domain squatter for it.

In fact, I'm trying to come up with one for you right now. ;)

haha nice!

$0.99?

Did the price just go up to $0.99? If I seach for WhatsApp, I still see the price as free, but if I load the WhatsApp Messenger page, the price says $0.99.

Been trying out both whatsapp and ping...I love whatsapp fuctionality. Definitely wins here. But I have to agree that Ping! Is a much beter name and quite catchy. Unfortunately, it sometimes comes down to marketing. I appreciate the pun though :p

WhatsApp Messenger. "WAM me" hmmm. Nope.

I'm trying to get friends to DL whatsapp though.

Also, it would be nice if it wasn't tied into the cell#. I get it but there are some people who I only give my GoogleVoice # to so it doesn't work in that sense.

"wapp me" .. hehe

yeah, 'ping me' is definitely a killer, but i'd be totally paranoid about trademark holder of 'ping' getting a wind of this app. thats just me though:)

See when I hear WAPP, I think of WAP. And both WAM and WAPP me sound violent. Lol.

I'll keep trying to think of stuff too. Hehe. iPM would have been great but I don't think you can use iPhone in the name of a non-native apple app :(

Actually, I've suggested the iPhone Messenger name before, but there's a reason why the developer doesn't fancy it too much.

Ping is trademarked?

pretty sure that a common word like ping would be trademarked...

yup, just checked -- it is. every common word in english is trademarked. which is why most companies come up with unique sounding names.

of course, would most trademark owners care about their name used in the iphone app? probably not. but i didn't want to take a chance and hence 'WhatsApp' was born.

Yeah, but just because it's trademarked it doesn't mean you can't use it. When you register a trademark you also choose which goods and services that trademark is going to be used for. If you want to use a word for something not included on the goods or services of that trademark, you can use it and even trademark it for what you want.

Example: Apple is a trademark for Apple Inc. and also Apple Records. They operate on different businesses so it's perfectly legal.

That is due to iTunes Music store. Since Apple started to work with music they started "stepping" on the music business thus infringing on Apple Records trademark. It wasn't a problem when Apple only sold computers.

ok, maybe you right.. i am not a trademark attorney by any stretch.

i just remember a big deal over it
