laggy open/close animation on 2020 Air, sometimes.

buttery smooth on Catalina

ok it is smoother than PB1, but still not there!

Also, scrolling in Safari is a bit inconsistent speed wise.

2017 13" MacBook Pro.

Switched to lowest resolution and same issue so I am attributing this to bad software optimization.

I wonder if the m1 machines will have this problem

I would hope the graphics driver is tuned for the newest shipping computers but who knows

how hard can it be to both observe and fix?
Makes the Big Sur experience feel like Big Crap

even if everything is else is in line

scrolling is inconsistent choppy crap too

Same here on MacBook late 2013 13inch. Quick look was very smooth on Catalina but very choppy on Big Sur.

You can also try to Quick Look (spacebar) with a huge image and move the window around the screen. This make it very laggy.

Hovering the mouse quickly on menu items (e.g. in Safari) is also very slow / choppy.

I think that is what everyone is waiting for - initial benchmarks and real-world performance. Saying the hardware is x times faster means nothing if the software is not optimized. I know the Intel GPU isn't the greatest but I still expect it to handle everything within the OS with ease - simple animations shouldn't be choppy or slow.

It's choppy on a Mac Pro 7,1 as well loaded with 96GB of RAM, 1TB SSD and the 32GB Vega II video card.

It's Safari 14 I think causing major memory leaks and slow downs. Catalina was very snappy with the latest release, until Apple pushed Safari 14 and everything went to ****

+1

Macbook Pro 13 2020 i5 16GB touchbar, extended desktop to 5k Ultrafine. Really choppy quicklook and laggy Finder, sometimes it takes a second or two to register a click.

Catalina was completely smooth.

Noticed this as well. Returned 2020 i5. Ordered m1. I think it’s just more optimized for m1

also, Catalina got bad after the second update to safari 14 (14.0.1). That’s why I upgraded to Big Sur. Didn’t help.

That shouldn't be the case, or I smell a class-action lawsuit against Apple if BigSur is crippled on Intel products as they have by far many more Intel computers they've either sold, or will sell over the next couple years.

I feel like Apple has gotten noticeably worse with software issues; either that or AMD has caused a lot of issues with their garbage graphics chips.

Does this seem normal? Just casual browsing in Finder through some document folders (<100 files in folders), mixed pdfs, photos, etc. Column view with preview, starts lagging after a few seconds and this is Activity monitor screenshot.

Big Sur fresh install. Macbook Pro 13 2020 i5 16GB touchbar, extended desktop to 5k Ultrafine.

I've noticed a general choppiness when moving mouse along dock. Also sometimes hang ups or delays on using touchid. Sometimes messages will stutter when opening and closing it, or almost a micro delay.

Maybe window server issue and external monitor related, although it can be replicated on screens internal and external...

I got the M1 Macbook Air and everything feels choppy compared to the new iPad Air. Shouldn't they be equally smooth?

I’m experiencing this, as well. Very upsetting as I just paid a decent amount for a brand new 27” iMac. First new macOS machine for me in 7 years. I was expecting fluidity. On the contrary, even dragging to change window sizes is choppy. Very disappointing.

I do hope this is not intentional (planned obsolescence because of M1 launch) and will be fixed soon.

It seems a range of us with intel machines are M1 machines are experiencing this.

Suspect window server process behind it.

I think it may be the built-in Apple apps using Catalyst causing issues. I find that if I'm not running Music or Messages the UI is smoother. Still not as smooth as my work laptop that still runs Mojave. If I could install Mojave on my 16" I would in a heartbeat as Catalina was pretty rough as well.

Confirming that WindowServer also consuming a lot of CPU.
It's almost idle when I don't move the trackpad.

Noticed this on my end too, running a 2020 4-port MBP. It seems hit or miss. Hopefully it's some coding issues in WindowServer that will be fixed with 11.1.

I picked up the M1 Macbook Air (8GB RAM) today and I am finding scrolling in Safari to be really choppy. At first I genuinely thought something was wrong with the screen, but 60fps videos play super smoothly, and I even tried Google Stadia and that was super smooth. So what's up? I find it hard to believe more people aren't talking about this, or is something really effed up on my end? Granted I know it's not going to be 120hz smooth like on the iPad Pro, but this seems very very frequently less than 60.

Sorry to say this, but this happening on M1 is at least a bit comforting that it is a software issue and will get fixed. It's similar on my computer, FCPX runs the same, VLC plays videos normally... yet Finder, Safari and Quicklook tend to be quite choppy.

Do you also run an external monitor on M1?

I haven't yet. I feel like I've mitigated it a little bit by installing an adblocker and maybe Spotlight indexing stuff has been dragging down performance? Or maybe it's completely the latter? I dunno. Hoping this gets improved.

On the plus side, my game project in Unity runs at nearly 60 fps in the editor, which is freaking sweet and comparable to my desktop PC. :-O
