The performance differences are negligible, if any. More importantly, if you get the Mac version, you won't have to bother with Bootcamp, you can play within the superior, quicker-to-start-up Mac OSX environment.

I guess my other concern is the Mods... There were so many great Mods for Civ IV. With all else equal, it seems like the Win version will allow more variety in gameplay.

System specs released and it requires steam, though no word on whether it's steamplay. Looks like it'll come before thanksgiving.

Not sure where you are getting the "before thanksgiving" part. They've just said "this holiday season." Generally that means early-mid december.

I emailed the developers and asked if updates for the game would be handled through Steam, and got a very silly standard reply that did not answer my question.

I emailed them back explaining this and repeated the question, but no reply so far.

If Steam is a requirement, yet updates are handled outside of Steam, as with Supreme Commander 2, then **** them, I'm buying the PC version.

Civ5 is out

Hey all! DL'd Civ 5 for OSX from ******* the other night! Runs great and is SUPER FUN!! Good Luck all!

That's Asypr's fault, not Valve's. But if you have to install it through Steam, I don't see how you can not update it with the program.

Sad news, Civ V for Mac will arrive Nov 23... but not on Steam...

http://kotaku.com/5679955/mac-owners-can-feast-on-civ-v-for-thanksgiving

You have to pre-order it through a rival online store, which probably means that:

1. Steam will still be mandatory, but only used for DRM.
2. Updates and patches will not be handled through Steam.

Why is Steam on Mac a good idea, again?

****!

Man this ticks me off. I went ahead and bought Civ5 for windows, assuming it would come to the mac side under steam.

I have been playing Civ5 under parallels, however it keeps crashing after about 2 hours or so of play. Im hoping its just a ram issue and will be upgrading my ram to 8gbs soon...

But still I was hoping that I would get to play this in steam...

If I weren't for mac Steam, we wouldn't be getting civ V at all.

Aspyr hasn't announced other digital stores yet, but they said there will be others. That said, I doubt you will be able to buy it on steam. But that does not preclude the possibility of automatic updates (see SupCom 2).

That's Asypr's fault, not Valve's. But if you have to install it through Steam, I don't see how you can not update it with the program.

Well, the way SupCom2 works is that you type a code into steam to register it. Steam must be running to run the game, but it never appears in your game list. You run it separately, and the game has it's own autoupdater.

Why is Steam on Mac a good idea, again?

Steam is a good idea because I can play Trine, HL2, Portal, L4D 1 & 2, Torchlight, Civ IV, and on and on and on ... all without paying a second time.

Look, I think that some folks thought that the release of Steam was going to cure all Mac gaming ills - but the core issues of Drivers, porting houses, and on and on remain.

For me, I think Steam has been great - I have bought WAY too many games twice through the years (Jedi Knight 2, Soldier of Fortune 2, Fable: TLC, Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age, and on and on ...) so appreciate that even SOME games are SteamPlay ...

But I guess I join those who are more than a bit annoyed at games that have all of the downsides of a Steam release with none of the upside ...

So while I would love to PLAY Civ V on my Mac, I'm not buying a half-a$$ed hobbled port in order to do it.

So I tried for a second time to get an answer from Aspyr to wether the updates for the game would be handled through Steam, since it will require Steam, and again they refused to answer.

However, they gave me a clue in this sentence:

"Civilization V Mac will be available this holiday season through gameagent.com, apple.com, amazon.com and many others! Check aspyr.com and blog.gameagent.com for the latest news on Civilization V Mac."

I do not think Steam is included in "many others" because that would be quite bad PR, so not only is there a high probability that updates won't be handled through Steam, it seems that you won't even be able to buy the game through Steam for the Mac... ouch.

They didn't answer because they simply do not know yet. They are still working out the details with Valve. From their blog:

We’ve been able to confirm that SteamWorks will be incorporated into the game for purposes such as achievement tracking and DRM. Unfortunately, we don’t have much more information to share at this moment. We’re still working with Valve to determine the full extent of the Steam integration. We’ll be posting a full update on these issues and more in an upcoming Civ V Mac FAQs post, so keep an eye out!

Updates should be handled automatically, if not via Steam then through Sparkle. However, I doubt we'll be able to buy the game from Steam. But we'll see shortly.

so it doesnt look likes going to be steamplay then :(

im holding off buying my windows copy hopeing that it will be steamplay like civ 4.

damn :(

Played Civ for the first time this past week. Awesome game, but I can see why games like these never appealed to me when I was younger :p

Now if I only had a mac that can run Civ V...

For those of you who pre-ordered it through this Gameagent thing... I hope you didn't miss the thread on that download service. ;)

Specifically...

How many downloads are allowed?
Customers may download the game up to 10 times. This includes if you mess up and “re-download.” If you run through those 10 downloads, please call our customer service (support.aspyr.com/ 1.512.708.8100), and they’ll help you out. Restarting the downloads and a poor network connection could lead to using up more than one download.

How many activations are allowed?
Customers may activate the game twice. This means you can install and activate on two machines. Please call customer support should you experience a need for additional activations.

Can I switch to a new machine and still have my games?
With all standard orders, installs are permitted on 2 machines, with 2 activations available between those 2 machines. Unfortunately, you cannot deauthorize a machine once the game has been activated and move it to another machine.

I'm not even a fan of Steam, but seriously... what the ****.

Why aspyr partnered with Digital River for their Digital Distribution is beyond me. Those guys are grade A crooks. After years of trouble with anything purchased from Digital River, I made a personal decision to not purchase from companies using them some time ago. This has served me well. I anticipate nothing but trouble for people purchasing Civ V through this avenue.

Just wanted to mention... Civ 5 is incredible, but be prepared to loose track of time... I played for 6 hours straight the other day and it was one amazing battle!

Also for any one who owns Civ 5 for Windows, apparently its possible that we would have to repurchase it for mac and it wont be SteamPlay (Allows one purchase for both windows and mac versions of the same game). So if that's the case, I guess I'll stick with what I have. However, to all those who plan on joining in the Civ 5 fun, add me on steam: junkers84

More details, please!

Thanks for the overview. I'm trying to decide if I get Civ 5, so any more detail on the game and your reaction to it would be appreciated.

I've played the demo (100 turns) and was left "kinda blah", not to get too technical. I've played Civ, Civ II, Civ III, and Civ IV, so I want to like Civ 5. But so far I'm not impressed.

You can buy the PC version for 40 from Amazon, as the game supports SteamPlay. They announced it today!
