You can buy the PC version for 40 from Amazon, as the game supports SteamPlay. They announced it today!

Awesome - confirmed!

"From the comments that poured in, it seemed clear that many of you had purchased the PC version, even though it was the Mac version that you really wanted, and either expected that Civ V Mac would support SteamPlay or that Civ V Mac would not even be released for some time." The Mac version will be made available on Steam and other download sites as planned on Tuesday.

Wait... I'm confused by this turn of events...

If I buy the PC version, I get the PC and Mac version now?

What happens if I pre-ordered the Mac version, I only get the Mac? Not the PC?

I need to cancel my pre-order, I think...

You buy the PC version, you get a mac version too.

You buy a Mac version and you will get the PC version either.

No need to cancel your pre-order if you have not got a PC version.

The patch would be delivered through Steam, but not the same time as Windows. Some days later.

Yes! Gonna buy when I get home from work. Been waiting for it to come to OSX since I dropped all my PCs from my house.

No, you get a code which you enter in steam, and both versions will be added to your library.

Is this normal practice?? I think both Black ops and Medal of honor needs steam activation(??)

And if so, will I get the same Steam benefits such as unlocks/achievements as if I have bought it on Steam in the first place???

I have been away gaming for some time :)

Steam activation has been around for a while, and is being used as a level of DRM. Empire/Napoleon Total War are other examples of retail games that use Steam, as well as being available digitally.

Yes, you get all the Steam benefits even if it's a retail copy, and you can get DLC off Steam (as an example, I bought Empire TW at retail, but all the DLC direct on Steam, and under the game properties it lists where each came from)

Basically if the game supports putting the code into Steam, it gives you the Steam copy, exactly like if you bought it off Steam.

Hmmm, wondering whether to buy this now. I've not really played Beyond the Sword much at this stage.

Kudos to Aspyr for porting it quickly enough that the PC version isn't dirt-cheap yet. I wish my computer could run it, too. As much as I'd like to show my support for Aspyr porting it so quickly and making the awesome decision of having Steamplay compatibility, I'll have to wait until I get a full-time job (to afford it) and a new computer (to run it). Soon Aspyr, soon.

Already own PC Version

What if you already bought the PC version because you could not wait and really wanted the Mac version - can you get it for free download off steam?

Looks amazing but I get a huge gray bar to the right in fullscreen on my iMac, as if the game doesn't support widescreen.

WTF

EDIT: it's a 1440 issue, works fine in 1080

I have no issues on my Mac Pro running the game in full screen. I maximized all settings to high and changed the resolution to 1920x1200 and it still works great.

Yeah, it's only an issue in 2560x1440.
BTW works flawlessly on a 27" i7 iMac, all maxed out.

I just love the new battle system, it make so much more sense and leaves much more to strategy with the increased importance of units disposition.

Be careful if you buy the Digital Deluxe version off Steam, there's no Mac DLC or OST, as I bitterly found out earlier :(

DLC is coming. It's weird you can't access the DLC or OST, though. You could always boot into windows/crossover and install Civ to get them that way.

Or just torrent them, since you paid for them.

Anyone knows if mid-2009 MBP be able to run the game? The minimum spec is 2.4GHz, 2GB RAM and 256 VRAM. Mine is 2.16GHz and with the stock 9400, but I upgraded the RAM to 8GB.

Will I still be able to run the game with the lowest setting?

Interesting question. The difference in power between the 2.26 (which is the lowest MBP 13 spec in 2009) and the 2.4, in a MBP is hardly noticeable. In the same year, the 2.26 actually would better the 2.4 in a 2008 Macbook due to the better system architecture. So I doubt CPU would be the issue.

The System demands for the Mac version are rated higher than the PC version. So if you did Bootcamp it, your MBP would play Civilization real easily. Not only that, if system specs are to go by, you should be able to bump up the graphics a bit.

Something annoying I've found. If I have the 9400 enabled, play Civ 5, realise that I haven't flicked to the 9600 ( ), quit, switch, relaunch, it crashes and I have to delete the settings plist in preferences. Every other game can handle graphics switching just fine, why not Civ 5? :(

The game has some serious issues with the multiplayer.

Mac-PC versions are currently incompatible. I find it is impossible to find a game. Also the classic Hotseat feature is nowhere to be found. All you can do is play with AI.

Seriously disappointed about that. The rest is amazing but I bought it to play online and in hotseat.
