Civ V launched from Steam creates a black screen for a few seconds, the sound starts, then a low-res flicker, and back to the steam screen. Won't launch at all. Mid 2010 MBP 15" 2.66 330M 8GB 10.6.5.

Many other reports floating around - avoid this turkey.

10.6.5 has issues I believe. 10.6.4 here and it work perfectly, never crashed in the 4 games I played, some online.
email Aspyr, they reply quickly.

No response to my email, and others report the same - no response, no resolution. And Steam won't issue a refund for a defective product!

10.6.5 dev builds have been out for weeks, and there's nothing in their knowledgebase about issues.

It should run on low-medium settings (played with someone with a 2007 iMac and he said he was running on low settings). The settings are quite customizable.

civ5 works better on smaller games through (6-8 players-small maps).

So high settings with lower resolution (less than native) aren't possible on my iMac?

Quick few questions -

Not had a problem gaming on my MacBook at the moment, it's a late 2009, 2.26, 4gb Ram, 9400m, and it's perfect for games like Half Life 2, Portal, Team Fortress; never had any lag on those games. Aware that Civ 5 won't run perfectly, but I didn't buy a Mac primarily for games.

So, if I buy the Civ 5 Windows version, currently only £17.49 on Amazon (when it's £29.99 on Steam), how abouts do I go about getting it on my MacBook? I'm just unsure as to how it would work; do I need a PC to install the game disc on, then link it to Steam, then I'll be able to download it on my Mac? Or is it a lot simpler than that?

Lastly, and this is just me wondering generally; heard a lot of people say that Civ 4 is better, some say it's not as good, what's the general opinion here?

First, you should be aware that the 9400m is below the minimum specs. It may run, but you might run into problems, and Aspyr won't help you. If you have bootcamp, play the demo and see how it performs, keeping in mind that you will have a 10-15% performance hit in OS X.

All you do is download the Mac Steam client, log on, and enter the code on the box. It will appear in your mac games list for download.

I wouldn't say that there is a "general opinion" which is better. It's a matter of preference. IV does have a lot more "stuff" simply because it has two expansions.

Relax, they are on turkey break. There will be a patch. Apparently they finished the GM right before a new build of 10.6.5 came out.

Well they responded to my multiplayer issues, but they can't reply to everyone I guess. There is a knowledge base that covers some issues.

Did you reinstall your videocard drivers? Did you try running it in a window?

What do you mean by "once you buy it?"

I have never used Steam before. Do you need a code in the box to get the Mac version from Steam or how does this work?

Yes, exactly. If you buy the PC version, you enter the code into the steam client and it will be added to your Mac games list. Then you can download it.

Ah, okay, many thanks for your help. I think I'll give Civ IV a go, guessing I'll be able to pick up a cheap copy somewhere.

Unless I'm dense, there are no separate video card drivers on a mac. It won't even start - at all - so I can't run it in a window.

So until then, I'm stuck with a $50 game that won't even launch - and they haven't even posted a note that says 'if you upgraded to 10.6.5 then you're out of luck and can't run the game'. Frankly, I don't buy that it's a 'new' 10.6.5 issue. The developer builds were out for weeks, and I'd be very very surprised if there were such a major issue introduced in a late build - especially since NO other application seems to have a complete inability to launch after upgrading.

Does anyone know if we'll be getting that free Mongolian Invasion scenario pack? I'd love to get my hands on that...

You may not believe it, but that's what one of the programmers said, and believe it or not, ***** happens. It will be patched. It's not the end of the world.

In the meantime, here is a workaround.

So, the question I have is:

Do I buy the PC version from Amazon on the cheap, or just buy the Mac version from Steam to support the Mac developer? The PC version is put out by someone else obviously.

The Steam version is SteamPlay (Mac/PC) so when you buy that version they can't tell if you bought it for the Mac or PC. I expect Aspyr doesn't get much $$ from each sale.

If you really want to support them, but the Mac DVD from Amazon, or the DVD/download from GameAgent.

yes, in steam you can add command lines to applications (right click the application).

CMD-Enter will toggle instant window mode, try it as soon as you launch.

Or try to Set Fullscreen to 0 in the various ini, perhaps as a command.

Workaround doesn't apply to the new MBP's - don't have that option any more (it's just automatic, or no switching).

Edit: Ok, Just saw something that I never expected. The 330M isn't on the supported video card list, so that explains it. Aspyr doesn't support the latest MBP!!

I can only reply with: WTF.
I didn't know you had the latest MBP.

They replied to me 3 times already about the multiplayer (by email). Are you sure you opened a ticket with them?

I get this too! Second WTF with this game... god damnnnnit!

Oh, and now I see this:

Amazing.

EDIT: I read their support Twitter... how do I launch the game in windowed mode? Supposedly it might fix things... but the bloody support page doesn't state how...

EDIT: Disabling the intro in an .ini and then pressing cmd + enter did the trick... but WHO THE **** at Aspyr figured it would be a good idea to put all Civ 5 files in the documents folder? Ever heard of Application Support???

Why can't I set shadows to anything but low? I have the latest MBP...

EDIT: Alt-tabbing and using expose makes the cursor permanently disappear in Civ 5 when you go back to the menus. Major fail.

EDIT: Erm... why does it say DX9 at the top of the window? I bought the DVD... did Aspyr sneak Cider/Transgaming/Wine in there?

EDIT: I'm pretty sure that the mouse cursor is supposed to have 8-bit transparency... I'm seeing 1-bit... like a gif from 1995...

Please be aware the system requirements are pretty hefty. Even on PC at a minimum the requirements are:
Operating System: Windows® XP SP3/ Windows® Vista SP2/ Windows® 7
Processor: Dual Core CPU
Memory: 2GB RAM
Hard Disk Space: 8 GB Free
DVD-ROM Drive: Required for disc-based installation
Video: 256 MB ATI HD2600 XT or better, 256 MB nVidia 7900 GS or better, or Core i3 or better integrated graphics
Sound: DirectX 9.0c-compatible sound card
DirectX®: DirectX® version 9.0c

Which MBP do you have?
With the 320 or 330M? Also I think Aspyr would support the 330M, its probably just an omission..one that should be corrected.

As implied by what I quoted, I have the newest top of the line Macbook Pro.

It would be pretty ridiculous if that machine couldn't run a strategy game at max settings.

L4D2 looks and runs pretty bloody nice (except for the green goo from the spitters... which looks horribly out of place).
