Ok, native version is completely unplayable for me.

First black screen on launch, worked around it by disabling intro and switching to windowed mode, then mouse cursor disappears whenever I switch to another window. I just tried a few turns and I had one CTD and one hard ****ing freeze! A full freeze! I haven't had one of those in months (it's an issue with the latest MBP).

How do you disable the intros? I did not see that option.

You go into the usersetting.ini (which for some MORONIC reason is in your documents folder, rather than application support) and set the skipintro setting to 1 (I got that from the official Aspyr support forum).

Cool! I was looking for it in the graphics ini. I have had a problem, where Civ V is almost unplayable on a 13" 2010 MBP, yet when I shut down Steam, I can see the intro scene still playing in the background. No wonder I'm having issues.

Hmmm, I was really tempted to try out this game... but with all theses issues I think I'll just stick with Civ IV.

Quick question: How's the game play, once you get it working that is. I've heard it's quite different & boring compared to previous Civ games.

It's pretty similar actually, but I am looking forward to the expansions (there is no spies in Civ V, they are probably keeping it for the expansions).
You cannot stack units on one tile, makes battles much more strategic. Looks much much better than Civ IV, if you have the horsepower. There is many tweaks that I really like, like the possibility for cities to attack, the way range units work, as well as the way golden ages, policies and culture works. Also making workers no longer stops city growth.

It's not that different actually, takes about 1-3 hours to get used to it. There is some bugs to be fixed, lack hotseat mode, but it is certainly not boring!

Yes, exactly. If you buy the PC version, you enter the code into the steam client and it will be added to your Mac games list. Then you can download it.

I've bought one or two boxed retail games that were also available on Steam (I wanted the physical manual). Although Steam allows me to enter the key, it doesn't recognize it as a Steam-related key. Although the games appear in the library, Steam will act as a launcher for an existing install only. No downloading, and disc check still required on launch.

I can't speak specifically for Civ V though. I think in my case the two games were Fallout 3 and Dawn of War.

I really like Steam for no disc check and future downloading, but I miss having physical manuals for certain types of games.

They must be Steamworks games, or specifically allow you to register the game's code on steam. Just because you can buy the digital version on the store doesn't mean that'll be the case.

I just got the most baffling answer from Aspyr support (as I said earlier in the thread, I have the latest 15-inch MBP):

1. I still cannot set medium or higher shadows. THIS IS NOT SUPPORTED FOR YOUR VIDEO CARD
2. The mouse cursor has a huge black outline instead of a proper shadow. THIS IS DUE TO YOU SETTING GRAPHICS OPTIONS OUTSIDE OF WHAT YOUR VIDEO CARD SUPPORTS

I get this too! Second WTF with this game... god damnnnnit!

Oh, and now I see this:

Amazing.

EDIT: I read their support Twitter... how do I launch the game in windowed mode? Supposedly it might fix things... but the bloody support page doesn't state how...

EDIT: Disabling the intro in an .ini and then pressing cmd + enter did the trick... but WHO THE **** at Aspyr figured it would be a good idea to put all Civ 5 files in the documents folder? Ever heard of Application Support???

Well, if I complain in public, I'll also acknowledge a fix in public.

I don't use twitter (which is NOT a good means to share software support), and they hadn't bothered to put that in their knowledge base, but after several exchanges of emails I got the answer (with some fiddling with the steam version), and got it to launch.

Now does anyone know how to disable the long cinematics on each launch? esc and space don't seem to do it.

6-7 posts earlier it is explained, but it doesn't change much, the cinematic seem to be covering up for some loading time, so you'll get a black loading screen and perhaps save 1-2 seconds.

yeah this is basically true. the cinematic of the guy and the boy coming into tent is just something to look at while the game loads in the background. I prefer it over a blank screen since I can predict when the cinematic will stop.

Thanks - I missed the info earlier, but good to know it's not just eye candy.

i didnt knew it was native for the Mac.....

its more recent... could play the Wineskin based port from Day 1 of Civ5... months before the native Mac release that actually doesn't run much better... just think of all the money Aspyr wasted making something run about 5% better by actually re-writing a buncha native code.

I'm hoping the 5% is just a shoddy rushed thing for christmas on Aspyr's part and that they will at least get 100% better once they've done patching and fixing.

...sigh... "hoping that it's rushed"... that's pretty frickin sad, actually...

Anyone else get full freezes whenever a leader screen pops up? I get it regardless setting (330M here).

Well, this way those who got it on Steam can play on Mac or PC ...

It sort of does. It's a dual-core processer with hyperthreading which makes it kinda like quad-core.
I realize they have hyperthreading, but a dual-core with HT will never be able to match a true quad-core processor in programs that can use more than two cores.

I'm sure its just a shoddy port... Aspyr does that a lot.

Civ4 was a very shoddy port, and years of patches and expansions later it actually runs a lot better now than when it first came out, not just in stability, but it performs much better now.

So if it goes anything like Civ4, I except after 2 expansions and some patches that it will probably run about 25 to 30% faster in a couple of years.

I found that setting it to low (or minimum, if you can stand negotiating with a static image of the civ leader) stopped the problem on my late 2010 iMac.
