I bought these items:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003AI272I/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4 Pin Molex Sleeved Fan Cable extension - 48"
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TJY5S8/ref=oh_details_o02_s01_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I did buy the:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ZDNXYY/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Then realized that no one is going to see my Mac Pro in my office under my desk so I did not use the extension cables.

I just went with Keep it , Plain and Simple.

K got my 7970 today but having some issues

I am using a Seasonic X 650 modular power supply for the card with both 8 pins plugged in directly to the modular psu

and the card in slot one installed correctly, but the fans wont turn on the card and the Sapphire logo n the side of the Vapor X doesnt glow either but the green power LED is on

Would someone happen to know what I am doing wrong?

Thanks

Have you read this thread about how to start PSU without a motherboard?

Thanks for the help counted off for the clip, now it started up and works ...

Just another question that is gonna sound dumb system profiler sees 2 GB of VRAM instead of the 6 GB, is there a fix for that? Thought under 10.8.3 the limiter was gone

Thanks!

And do the fans stay at full speed when going into sleep mode?

system profiler should show all the RAM, my 7950 shows 3GB, however photoshop and steam only show 2GB.

That's because the external PSU is not synchronized with your internal PSU, you have to turn it off manually. The molex plug is supposed to put these two PSUs in sync.

this is a 6GB Vapor X on a 10.8.3 running Mac Pro

Shows 2048 mb or 2GB instead of 6 GB ...

try it in another mac, or use bootcamp\windows to see if it shows 6gb

I only have 1 Mac Pro...

the rest of my Macs are minis or Macbook Pros (By mine I mean in my house)

Anything else I can do to figure out why it's happening?

This could be a problem for System Profiler recognizing VRAM greater than 4GB or an ATI driver issue. Check if the applications you intend to use could recognize all the VRAM. After all that's what really matters, not how it looks in the Finder. If you have access to 10.8.4 beta, you could try it since it can properly display 6GB VRAM of the Titan GPU.

How do I check how much video ram is available to a certain application?

Might try downloading 10.8.4

Thanks

After Effects only sees 2.00 GB Though this isnt a cuda card so I dont know how much OpenGL Plays into after effects

That's interesting that all the photos were replaced with somethings else.

Do you have System Profiler and everything else show the full capabilities of your card? Or does it Also truncate the amount of VRAM you have? I know you also have a 6GB Vapor X

Thanks

Updated to 10.8.4 Still have the same issue

It seems this is more likely a driver issue until AMD could fix it. There is something called "OpenGL Driver Monitor" which is part of the Apple Developer Tool, and it could be used to track the GPU VRAM usage as explained here. See if you can get hold of a copy and help you with the VRAM usage.

K thanks under that application it only seems to show a little over 2 GB of Memory as free when I attempted to use it. Guess I will just wait out new Graphics drivers and hope they fix the issue.

Question unrelated to this graphics card. If I were to have an Nvidia GFX Card along side an ATI and only intend to use the NVidia for CUDA (No Display Plugged in) would that work, or would having 2 conflicting brands cause issues?

Thanks!

I don't believe there would be any problems as long as you got enough power for both of them. BTW, you should find a way to let AMD and Apple know the driver issue, and hopefully they'd fix it before 10.8.4 comes out. NVIDIA seems to do a much better job on the Mac side.

Well, I installed the Sapphire HD 7970 Vapor-X GHz Edition Card. BAM works like a champ.

Black screen when booting up. Video present at desktop when the machine finishing booting up.

Got the same card not all 6 GB of my VRAM show, is it the same for you? Or did you do something to allow all 6 GB to show?

Thanks!

Thx for confirming that is the case under OSX was a little worried.

Other then the fact it doesn't show the memory correctly it does seem faster in most of the things I use that are gfx card affected.

I don't care what your power calculations are.....

I trusted the earlier poster who swore that there is nothing wrong with just hooking in the 7970 to the Mac Pro and let her go. Yes, it works but when I am loading my graphics card with Aperture or Final Cut, the whole system shuts down cold. I mean immediate black screen, hard reboot. Without warning. Clearly the power draw goes up and the system kicks out on some kind of safety preservation mode. Thank God. Perhaps he has a higher tolerance for some reason but I have three other graphics cards and it doesn't ever do this. So, against the advice of many here, I listened to the experience of one and now I see he is wrong. I will try to figure out what power supply I need to hook up to make this thing work. On top of all that, it never made a lick of difference in any of the Apple Apps I use. FCPX and Aperture mainly.(

I just got one of the these, works great. It's currently powering a GeForce GTX TITAN card in my 2009 Mac Pro.

Are you using a 3,1 Mac Pro?

I have found those are more likely o do this than 4,1 and 5,1.

Also, which 7970 do you have?

Thanks for posting this info.
