I recently bought the 5S at Walmart for $300 new. What a wonderful phone!
It's the Straight Talk model, which came unlocked so my non-Straight-Talk SIM worked no problem.
I'd only upgrade if the SE were dual-camera. Why else bother? I don't use Apple Pay.
There's no way they'll debut the dual camera with the SE. Absolutely not happening until their premium-priced iPhone in the fall.

Yep, sounds right. Then the main upgrades would be 12MP, CPU, RAM, and NFC. Of all that, only 12MP would be compelling for me. But let's say I sell my 5S for $150, and the new phone is $550. I'd never spend $400 to upgrade, when that would be better spent going toward a mirrorless camera.

Sure, if that's what you want/need. To each his own. For some, $400 to upgrade to latest iPhone, a device which they use dayin and day out more than any other, is a great deal.

I am buying it on day one. Will be coming from the iPhone 6 128GB. I'm not expecting 128GB to be offered, so I'll take the 64GB. I also have the 12-inch MacBook, so I guess I'm the target audience for Apple's new small devices.

To name a few, assuming the rumors are true:

- A7 > A9: faster for games, and to comfortably use it with another 2-3 yearly iOS updates
- M7 > M9: better/more reliable activity tracking and allows for always-on Siri
- More RAM (possibly): important for multi-tasking (apps not resetting) and also future iOS updates
- Second generation Touch ID: way faster and more reliable
- Bluetooth 4.0 > 4.2: faster, better power management, privacy improvements
- Live photos: fun, if you care about that stuff
- Autofocus with Focus Pixels: pretty useful in many situations

If all that matters depends on your use of course. iOS 10 will probably run just fine, so you'll be good for another year at least. And $300 is definitely a good price for what the 5S still gives you today. But for anyone who doesn't have a relatively new 5S and is in the market for a new phone, there are pretty good reasons to pay 400-500 or whatever for the SE over the 5S (discount or not).

I think the se was rumored to have a bigger battery 1624mah? So perhaps better battery life?

Earlier in another post, I said no. But the more I think about it, maybe.

The first thing that bothered me is only 1 GB of RAM. I mean, it has a flagship SoC like the A9, why jip us with less RAM with flagship specs? Then I realized every smartphone I've seen with only "4 displays never had 2 GB of RAM. Just like you don't see "4 displays with 720p or higher. My iPad 2 with only 512 MB still runs fairly smoothly with iOS 8.3. So I don't think 1 GB of RAM for a "4 display should be an issue.

For compact smartphone fans, this looks to be the pinnacle coming from Apple. They not only improved the internals to match it closely to their current larger flagships, they improved the design and comfort of the iPhone 5 series with rounder edges.

So it is a maybe for me. But since I hate iOS and iTunes, this will be one of the backup phones. An expensive $500 backup, but I prefer the size for jogging and biking while listening to music.

Primary - Samsung Galaxy S7 edge w/ 200 GB micro-sd inside

Secondaries - LG G3 Beat, Microsoft Lumia 640, ASUS Zenfone Max, Apple iPhone SE (for music), and Xiaomi Mi 3...

Rotate them three at a time every week. Then sell one of them and get LG G6 next year. I really have my sights on a Mi 5 Pro as well but my country probably won't get it. Xiaomi's 2016 flagship is probably the sexiest looking (esp in black) only behind the silver S7 edge. I don't believe the iPhone 7 renders are fake. The rears look ugly and bland like the 6 series are. The iPhone 5 series is the Apple pinnacle in design and the iPhone SE just improved on them inside/out.

just curious, but how exactly do you rotate phones three at a time every week? What do you do about content management?

I think THAT'S the million dollar question. Are they going to spec (and thus price) this as a sub-premium line or a premium line but only smaller. We'll see soon.
I would not be surprised if this were another attempt at the entry market. Like with the c line. Smaller with a smaller bite on the wallet.

But then again it might be to keep people who prefer a smaller size of the current line.

Oh dang I don't know.

Same spec's minus the Force Touch would be a wonderful addition to those that want a smaller phone. Only one can hope it will also have 2 GB of ram.

6S plus.
Its a nice phone and I'm in love with the screen size, but that doesn't mean its without drawbacks. It's a bit unwieldy at times, not the easiest to carry around (especially when working out, at the gym or commuting).
I'm unsure if I could go through with it though, I find my girlfriends 6 small!
Edit - Would probably grab a lte mini 4 to go with the phone when I'd want a bigger screen, but not reach for my laptop.

That's the main problem I had with the 6S Plus; it's not really a good phone. It was too annoying to lug around, and the screen size, while nice with some things like texting with two hands or photos, doesn't really stack up with web browsing and the like. If yr out and want to text real quick you need two hands though. Also, I wanted it to replace my iPad, and it definitely failed in that regard.

Then yr back to the two device conundrum- either an iPad or MacBook and an iPhone. They should just make the iPad with a phone app, because if I'm going to carry around a big device, it might as well be my Air 2. Otherwise I was happier with my 5S, and I gave that to my father-in-law. First world problems.

I'll be switching from the 6s....I really miss my iphone 5 I had for 2 yrs. I hate the power button on the side, the power button on the top was perfect for me and I really miss the size of the iphone 5.

My 6s has 128GB so I really need that space, I'm really hoping the SE comes in 128 GB but it probably won't still I'm going to buy the SE on day one.

I'll agree to that, mostly. However, if an apple customer wanted the latest and greatest tech they had no choice but to size-up. With the SE it's an easier choice between small, medium, and large. Though I would prefer to see Apple do the same thing with the 7 series.

Yup, I agree with that, which is why there is so much interest in the SE, IMHO.

If the power button will stay on side, will it be a deal breaker for some of you ?

I think Apple is onto something good this time around. Three different size iPhones with basically the same spec's inside for us to choose from. Only wish Apple would give all three sizes the same camera, same camera stabilizations, memory, quick focus, smaller bezel, and only difference would be the screen size, and of course battery size.

I doubt this will happen, as it would mess with Apple's margins/pricing scheme, but I wish it would.

I was 100% getting the iPhone SE until yesterday.... Went the Apple store to buy my girlfriend a rose gold 6S and I played with the 5S for a while, man it is WAY too small the 4" screen.. I still don't like my 6S Plus size... Going to just wait for the iPhone 7 4.7" model.
