Apple Watch has stopped innovating for sure. They got to innovate in order for me to ever buy a new Apple Watch again. Specifically, Garmin Forerunner series has L5 GPS and Weeks of battery life, something that Apple does not offer.
The Ultra has L1+L5 dual band - not weeks of battery life, but a pretty good battery life for such a capable watch.

And as you later state, yes the lower end watches might not have that, but beside a spec-war watch any review of a S10 Apple Watch and especially from DC-Rainmaker and Desfit etc. to see how good the GPS accuracy actually is - not bad at all even without dual band - and a Forerunner 165 for example, doesn't have that as well

After reading this thread I did some thinking and decided to replace my Apple Watch as well.

Not having quite as much money as OP to piss up the wall, however results in this new watch.

It is admittedly not working for paying for beer. The bar tender just looks at me like I'm a lunatic now when I try and pay with my arm.
I've heard of skeleton watches but I hadn't realized they'd perfected them to this degree! What make is it? And it's not too clear in the photo, but is it running fast or slow..........:p

Different strokes for different folks. I suspect I’ll never wear an Apple Watch again. As far as thieves go, It happens, but watch insurance exists and is reasonably priced.

Personally the Santos is not my style of watch, for mechanical watches I prefer the larger Tag Heuer watches.
But if you like it then fair play, enjoy and maybe keep the Apple watch for certaion activities or times when you doi not want to wear the Santos.

Personal preference is key, do what makes you happy and that feels right for you.
:)👍

I'm on the cusp of buying a Santos De Cartier.

So, my Apple Watch (and 61 straps!) will be laid to rest.

I'm just not sure whether to do it or not?

I love the customisability of the Apple Watch, also little things like unlocking my Macs, Apple Pay etc, but I have always just loved the Santos.

What do you think?

Take care.

Do it! the Santos is a beautiful timepiece! And you can always keep your Apple Watch for sport activities, wear it on your other wrist or follow the latest trend and wear it on your ankle.

Personally, I've never understood the attraction of super-expensive, high-end watches—particularly since all they do is tell you the time, and possibly day and date as well.

I've a nice... uhm... been so long I'm not sure... Citizen, I think? Gold-plated. Very sharp-looking wrist watch. Used to be my dress watch. It was fairly expensive, by my lights, anyway, when I bought it some 40+ years ago. Goodness knows what such a watch would cost today.

I believe I re-batteried it once. It has since died again. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My Apple Watch is far more useful to me. To me a wrist watch is a functional item, not a fashion statement.

But to each their own. If having a high-end watch on your wrist makes you happy and you're not putting you or your family into hopeless debt in acquiring one: By all means. It's your life. Your money.

And I never understood what was so attractive by having another useless small computer screen for your wrist… 🤷‍♂️

Except for tracking your pulse, what else can it do that your phone can't?
We all know its a companion for your phone, don't get me wrong i know that but it can...

Find or ping my phone if i misplace it
Fall detection
siren
Blood oxygen levels
Irregular heart rate notifications
ECG
Sports tracking of sports where having a phone on your person is not ideal
camera remote

Just off the top of my head.

edited in after

Wrist temp
Sleep apnoea notifications

"Useless?" Not to me, it's not.

With my Apple Watch on I rarely have to pull my phone out of my pocket—nor carry it around in the gym when I'm working out.

My Apple Watch monitors my heart health and will warn me of exceptionally high or low heart rates and AFib. It has fall detection, which, at my age is a pretty damn good idea—despite the fact I'm probably in better shape than most American males 20-30 years my junior.

It's close enough monitoring heart rate I need a chest strap only when doing high-intensity interval training—and, even then, I use a chest strap as much because I want to see my HR on the assault bike's display as for its accuracy.

With my Watch I get estimates of my resting heart rate and VO2 Max: Important indicators of cardiovascular health which are, in turn, linked directly to longevity.

When I'm driving in a loaner or rental vehicle and using my phone for navigation the turn-by-turn warnings appear on my watch—allowing me to keep my eyes more on the road, much like a heads up display would.

Plus I can consult it to find the current day, date, and time :D

TBH: If my hearing aids could communicate directly with my Watch, instead of having to work through my iPhone, I could most of the time just leave my phone sitting on my desk.

Wonder how you've survived all the years without one…

What most people here don’t understand that unlike smartwatch a watch like Santos is art and most people who wear one use it as jewelry.
So why does that supersede other people’s reasons for wearing the watch they choose? You seem to have a real issue with smartwatch wearers but make the point about jewellery and traditional watches. I totally get the reasons myself as I wear both types, but why don’t you get it?

Yeah I am in the 'why is it even a question' crowd. its your money. You want it. Buy it. Use both. Use neither. Back in the days I used to wear a mechanical watch, I would put it on in the morning, take it off at night. If I were to use one again, I suspect I would use my Apple Watch at nights (I like keep track of my sleep) at the very least, and probably other times as well (swimming etc.). To me its 'use both.' Why not?

What an odd post. I’m a big fan of my Apple Watch Ultra 2, but I also have a collection of dress watches including a Tag Heuer 2000 series (my first real watch), an Heuer Carrera limited piece and my Zenith Defy Extreme Diver. My wife also has a couple of dress pieces but also wears an Apple Watch too 95% of the time. They all have their place so I’m a little lost as to why the OP wanted to abandon his AW.

I can't hazard a guess as to what type of user probably gets more joy on average out of their watch, either those who look at a watch mostly as a tool for what it can do, vs. those who look at a watch mostly as an accessory, because I think it's a complete toss-up.

But I definitely have a sense of which type of user gets more frustration and consternation from their watch(es).

:)

How about getting the watch that Tom Brady wore while at the Super Bowl...

Good God that website is awful to navigate. Just painful. Too much work and eyestrain with all the scrolling. A subjectively ugly website to match a subjectively ugly watch I suppose. That website is worthy of a mention HERE.

I understand the point of smartwatch, that's why I don't use it. However it’s funny to see/hear the reaction of people who use them and their reasons to justify it.

Or… You could, like this guy, enjoy both.

Maybe you find preferences for when you wear one vs. the other.

I ditched my Apple Watch and replaced it with an actual watch… nothing fancy, a Casio Mudmaster… so a little fancy as it cost more than an Apple Watch… my probable with the Apple Watch is that it’s not a watch, its a wearable you wear on your wrist and that’s what you consider it to be… If you want a watch get a watch if you want a wearable computer then get one of those… or if you’re lucky enough to have two arms… get both, seeing that more and more… why should owning an Apple Watch mean you can’t have a nice wrist watch as well… and wear them at the same time if you want to rock that look… why not…?

The Apple Watch should only be worn for health or if you’re addicted to getting instant notifications. If you want to free yourself, get rid of your Apple Watch. Leave your phone in your pocket until you’re making or receiving a call. Use an iPad or Mac for work. Simplify your life don’t complicate it especially with unnecessary distractions that the Apple Watch creates. Wear your new watch with pride. The engineering is amazing and the look is not the same as literally 80% of the people around wearing Apple Watches.

There is no justification, it’s just a device like any other and some have a use for the features and others don’t. Asking people why they wear smartwatches and them giving reasons isn’t them justifying it to you, because there is an insignificant factor in that conversation. Much like someone who wears an Omega asking someone else why they wear a Rolex, there is no reason to justify anything.
