I too get the issue at the point of shutdown, it will restart, flag up it wasn't shutdown properly and when I immediately shutdown after the initial restart, it will shutdown properly.

It’s gotta be software, but then how can this bug live on for so long?

surely it affects Apple staff.
Not being able to shutdown properly this regularly wouldn’t be ok on a raspberry pi. Never mind a 4000usd computer.

Restarted about 25 times today, no crashes.

I wonder what the reason is. Absolutely ****ing infuriating, two days ago, I had one every restart for about 10 in a row.

Maybe some cache was cleared?

Brand new iMac 2020 constantly panics in macOS. Selection of panic messages include>

* MCA / CATERR
* watchdog kill due to no check in from windowserver

same manifestation as others: both screens (yep multiple monitors, but I’ve had issue with just 1) go black, things like music keep playing for about 30s, then it reboots. happens within 1 hour, usually when using VirtualBox or Parallels, but sometimes neither.

Apple support had me repro in fresh install of MacOS. Check.

They are replacing the hardware, but I can confirm no instability in same hardware running windows in bootcamp. I was initially thinking hardware fault (due to the MCA errors) but now not so sure.

pretty terrible Experience for £3500. I’m going to install the kernel debug pack and use my old Mac to get a dump. Using Windows all day is killing me And Apple care just don’t have the experience to even gather the right diagnostics or escalate to engineering. I have to waste my time doing all this because if the problem persist with new hardware, what do I do then ? ;p

I have enabled verbose logging and caught that this is what macOS is doing under the hood when the KP occurs during reboot:

Really weird stuff.

I give up, just going to nuke the entire machine and clean install Big Sur when it's publicly released... and cross my fingers.

It suddenly started about a week ago. Every time I leave my 2019 iMac alone for a few minutes (maybe ten or so) it freezes and then restarts. However, it never happens during the time I use it.

There are many threads online about this issue, but no solution yet.
Same thing happens since about 3 weeks ago after the latest Mac OS update. My 2019 27" Retina iMac will crash overnight and restart waiting for my login in the morning. The only app running overnight is CCC : Carbon Copy Cloner running my daily backups. It appears to complete with no errors.

The Apple report dump showed VirtualBox as the app last run. I've deleted it and all of its hidden OS files but still had a crash last night/

Disabling Power Nap, Automatic Graphics Switching, and Prevent Computer from Automatically Sleeping only works for a day or two. Apple just replaced my Logic Board under warranty. I have not experienced a Kernel Panic now in 5-6 weeks Looks like Apple has a Logic Board issue with their 16" MacBook Pro . I have seen numerous online posts from other 16” MacBook Pro owners who have been directed by Apple to bring in for repair for Logic Board replacement. Not a cool experience for purchasing a $4000 computer. Apple confirmed that this is a know issue. After asking me to wait for 3 separate operating system updates (February through June) to see if the issue is corrected through software updates, I finally received the approval for repair. Tine to buy AppleCare to protect my investment.

My instinct was correct. After 2 days usage, got same behaviour in Windows. So, hardware. replacement will be coming in 3-4 weeks :(

Did a complete reinstall on my MBP 16 - took 2 days to reinstall all my apps etc.

Issue re-occured. Maybe it's software maybe it's hardware, either way it's a ****ing mess.

People are observing this issue on a wide variety of hardware. Can some software issue cause hardware failure ?

I'm pushing Apple to replace this, I can't shut the thing down without a panic.

Software can't damage hardware (save for running super heavy computation for weeks at a time).

I'll let you know if it happens on the replacement (which I guess I will have in a month).

I have slept and woken the computer many times now and it hasn't crashed. Usually I can only do it maybe three or four times, but now I've done it about ten times. No difference in usage pattern compared to the times when it crashed. What the heck is triggering this crash? I don't get it… ?

It will come back. I had no crash for 4 days and today it happened.

I am running with PowerNap switched off - and I haven't had a single kernel panic when shutting down for the past few days. PowerNap on it will kernel panic when I shutdown.

I always had powernap off. Still crash at shutdown. Though not every time.

2012 Retina Macbook Pro here - no issues with it until 2 days ago when I rebooted my machine, and that finally allowed the 10.15.6 upgrade to be installed. Not sure what version I was running before then, but ever since, I'm getting the issue now 5-6 times a day at least. Displays lock up but audio continues working, after about 60 seconds that stops, and soon after blank black screen. So far, I've only let that go long enough once to get the full Kernel panic, and that's when I got the watchdog error.

-- PowerNap is off (I always disable by default)
-- Hard Disks to Sleep is off (disabled by default)

Hoping we can come up with a solution, as this machine is no longer serviceable by Apple, nor is it getting Big Sur for any future updates.

I was having watchdog crashes (primarily) while the machine was sleeping.

About a week ago, I uninstalled the Kexts for Intel HAXM (virtual machine hypervisor) and Steam Input (used to process input from the Steam Link mobile app) and the crashes have stopped.

Both power nap and put hard disks to sleep are on.

May I ask what is the name of the Steam Link kext?

There were 2 for steam, one named SteamInput.kext and one named SteamInput-DS4v1.kext. They were in /Library/Extensions/.

I have not observed any negative effects from removing them, but have a system backup just in case :)

How did you identify those two KEXTs as the possible culprit?

So it seems that it might be hardware-related after all?
What where your exact symptoms, when did it panic?
Got 2 panics yesterday, one in close, timely proximity of a Slack app helper crash, but since then, not a single one. Still hoping this is only software...
