I've been testing my MacBook Pro 16 without any external screen connected. It has not made a single kernel panic since I took it off when I leave it open.

I did see one kernel panic that happened after the computer just didn't go to sleep by itself and I decided to close the lid. The next day when I opened up the lid, it had had a kernel panic.

I'm also on the latest supplemental 10.15.4. I'm considering moving to the Beta for 10.15.5.

I got an RX 5700 XT for macOS testing since macOS drivers have been released. Those random freezes and kernel panics occur since day one support and have not been fixed since. They still do happen in the 10.15.5 beta so don't waste your time. I think we won't see any improvements in Catalina anymore. They had more than enough time to fix up their **** already. Maybe 10.16 will finally bring improved graphics drivers.

Having the same exact freezing and restart for three days now (16" MacBook Pro), after four months without any problems at all.

I'm still on 10.15.3 (19D76).

Turned off Dropbox this morning – problem gone. No problems with external monitors here. Turned on Dropbox half an hour ago. Issue happened again after 20 minutes of running Dropbox.

One attempt at a fix that's been helping a number of people: In the Energy Saver preferences, unchecking the "Enable Power Nap" option (which is described as "While sleeping, your Mac can back up using Time Machine and periodically check for new email, calendar, and other iCloud updates.")

I just wonder if Dropbox is somehow using the same functionality (running actively in the background while the computer is sleeping.)

Makes sense. These kernel panics occur randomly when waking from sleep which is what power nap does. If one out of ten sleep wake cycles fail you can be sure to get a panic after some time in sleep when power nap is enabled.

I've seen the watchdog crashes occur while logged in and using the MacBook. Users with fresh 16" MBPs and 2019 13" MBPs. Is anyone else in the same boat?

2017 iMacPro running 10.15.4 with yesterday's patch. Last panic happened right before the patch install, so waiting to see if anything in the patch helped (nothing listed related to the issue). This is REALLY frustrating.

Ouch, so it's the same for 10.15.5 beta? Beta 2 for developers is out now, but I wouldn't hold my breath then…

However, I must add I also have stability issues when waking from sleep in Windows 10 with the RX 5700 XT I have! Used to have problems while using the computer in Windows 10 too, but now after some driver updates it only seems problems arries when waking from sleep – black screen and crashing. In Catalina I never had a crash while using the computer, only when waking from sleep.

If I didn't hear about people getting a similar crash with other graphic card generations from AMD in Catalina I would suspect there's something with the AMD's Navi architecture or it's drivers that are at fault. Hmm…

By the way, just got another Kernel Panic after while waking from sleep:

I don't have issues in Windows using the RX 5700 XT.

Congratulations then. :) Many people are still having problems:

RX 5700 XT Random Black Screens When Gaming

It's even listed as a ”known issue” in the release notes for the driver from AMD:

  • Some users may still experience black screen or system hang issues during extended periods of gameplay. AMD will continue to monitor and investigate reports of these issues closely.

But like I said as of late I've only had problems with crashes when waking from sleep in Windows 10 with the RX 5700 XT (just like in Catalina).

May I ask, are you connected to the RX 5700 XT using DisplayPort or HDMI?

I know about the issues some people have in Windows. Just wanted to say that I have none of them. So definitely not a general issue with Navi. I suspect it might be some side-effect of specific hardware or software constellations.

I guess so, but still seems pretty widespread. So you don't have any problems waking your computer from sleep in Windows either?

I've disabled Power Nap some days ago and connected my LG Ultrafine 5k back up again and I have not had a single kernel panic since. As someone pointed out earlier, Power Nap does seem to have an affect on this.

Nope, works absolutely flawless for me. Also gaming doesn't have any issues.

I already explained why. Wake from sleep triggers those panics randomly. So the more sleep / wake cycles you have, the higher the chance you get a panic. Disabling power nap reduces sleep / wake cycles since your Mac will only wake when you use it.

Gigabyte RX 5700 XT Gaming OC running on a Z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming WiFi Board with i7-8700K and Samsung 970 Evo 512GB along 32GB of 4000MHz RAM. The Navi card is not my daily driver tho. I just own it for macOS experiments. My daily driver is a Radeon VII.
