Hmm, I've done an SMC reset yesterday, and apparently that didn't fix it for my case.

Earlier this evening, I also tried installing the 10.15.4 Combo Update. It did its thing, all seemed fine, and I set the Mac back to Sleep ( Menu > Sleep). I come back, like at least an hour or so later, to see that my Mac has rebooted on its own once again. I see the error message that "Your Mac has restarted because of a problem" but when I click Report, the window disappears. And I don't find a corresponding Crash Report or panic log in Console for some reason (odd).

So... not sure what's up. I still think this is likely some crappy bug introduced to 10.15.4.

Registered just to confirm: none of the SMC/NVRAM/etc resets help. My 2015 macbook pro has been hit hard with this (restarts quite often). My (work) 2017 one seemed immune... until today when I also found it restarted in the morning.
Pretty sure it started in the recent days, which coincides with the latest macOS update the days before on both machines.
I've managed to report it a couple of times.
Latest example:
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff8011891b2c): Sleep transition timed out after 180 seconds while notifying clients about upcoming system capability changes. Suspected bundle: com.apple.driver.AppleACPIPlatform. Thread 0x74.

It has been there before 10.15.4, but interestingly it seems not everyone (all hardware configurations?) has been affected.

Great to hear 10.15.5 beta 1 is stable so far @outlawrock! Reports has been given to Apple for quite some time, so I think they will eventually deal with it – maybe 10.15.5 is it. :)

So Apple has made the problem worse for me in 10.15.4 as now the computer no longer automatically reboots (it used to in 10.15.3), it just hangs and i need to force reset, but it does not trigger the 'report a system error' dialog on the next boot. Makes it more difficult to report issues to Apple :(

Brand new MBP 16 i9, exact same issue with a totally stock software config. Have done a total OS restore (wiping the SSD in the process) and the problem remains. Very frustrating.

I noticed in the crash log that SMB key text is being loaded. Are you connecting to a device over SMB. If so, maybe stop using that and see if the issue stops. Maybe also try a SMC and PRAM reset as well.

The MBP is asleep now with no SMB connections active. I’ll report back in the morning if that had any effect.

WRT SMC and PRAM resets, I’ve already tried those, and a complete system restore after formatting the SSD, none of which resolved the problem unfortunately.

I assume by your reply that you were using a SMB connection with the iMac. Was that also the case with the MacBook?

Yes, there are lots of shared resources on the local network here, SMB shares are a plenty, though the software suite and use patterns on the MBP16 aren’t different from the other machines (including iMac, iMac Pro, Mac mini, Mbp15 and others) in use here, and none of them crash during sleep.

I've started seeing the same thing, although not very frequently. I normally have my MacBook Pro 16" connected with a Caldigit TS3+ Dock and a LG UltraFine 5k (a cable on each side, not daisy chained). I'm running on the latest Catalina release 10.15.4. I use my MBP a lot at my desk, where it sits on a stand. I leave it there with the lid open (2 screen setup with the LG) and it goes to sleep after a while.

So, 4-5 days ago after seeing another crash I reached out to Caldigit support about out and they acknowledge that they had narrowed down on the problem which was relating to Sleep in Catalina. They said that Apple needed to fix this and that they had now also acknowledge the problem. A fix is said to be 2 months away according to their support team.

Alright, so I decided to take off my Caldigit dock and try running some days without it. This has resulted in now daily kernel panics, sometimes timeout waiting for WindowServer like OP other times IOKit errors.

I've today decided to take off my UltraFine 5K screen and just run with a power cable connected to the MBP to test if this somehow makes it better.

It is very frustrating and I just wanted to share my experience here :)

Bets are that you have a hardware problem, which can be diagnosed at an Apple Store (but not right now) and if that is the case, can be fixed at an Apple Store (but not right now).
It suddenly started about a week ago. Every time I leave my 2019 iMac alone for a few minutes (maybe ten or so) it freezes and then restarts. However, it never happens during the time I use it.

There are many threads online about this issue, but no solution yet.
Had exactly those symptoms years ago when a dealer sold my company ****** RAM. They same may happen if your RAM is defective.

The fact that this problem suddenly seems to be very widespread suggests to me a software issue in recent versions of the OS itself, or surely those with 2019 hardware would have started complaining long ago?

I am seeing this on my MBP 15'' for the past 2 - 3 weeks and the pity is that - i cannot take it to the apple support due to the whole lockdown in effect. Attaching herewith my crash log for your reference.

I am connected to a small 14'' monitor since it is a home office setup.

Can someone please confirm if the update to 10.15.5 is going to solve this issue?

Thanks
Rajkumar

Pretty sure this isn't a hardware problem. Many different systems showing similar Kernel Panics and it didn't happen pre Catalina.

Appreciate you registering to let us know, especially that this is affecting 2015's and 2017's as well.

This is an interesting idea, that maybe it's devices over the network that, combined with Catalina, are causing crashes. That said, I've had this issue occur to me on 4 different networks, some of which do not have any SMB devices.

Maybe you can try an experiment and boot into Safe Mode and see if the issue happens. In Safe Mode none of the third party extensions and key texts will load. Essentially it is a sanity mode. This may give some indication if something you have installed is contributing to the crashes.

A few days ago, I decided to do a clean reinstall of Catalina. I opted for it due to many beach balls and NOT because of the kernel panics (I had read it wouldn't help with the panics). I'd go into safeboot and then restart. It would help for a short time with beach balls but always would revert back. So......I decided to go for it and did a drag and drop of my backup files.

NO MORE KERNEL PANICS!!! It's been a good 3 days.

Now I have to figure out how to access previous time machine backups...not happening on Catalina. Ugh! WHY does Apple have to mess with stuff that's not broken?!?!

I have a similar problem with an Imac Pro .. 10.15.3 was fine ... 10.15.4 and 10.15.5 beta1 crashes and com.apple.firehose.io-wl which I have no idea where that is. Even happens in safe mode.

I heard a rumor that its due to 16+ thunderbolt drives which would suck for a Imac Pro user, but I really can't take the drives off line to test "easily" as I need the drives online to do work.

I just got a new MacBook Pro 16' about 2 days ago, and Ive noticed that every time I wake it up from sleep, the message that it had to restart due to a problem keeps popping up, and then it shows me this screen. Is this a hardware issue or a software issue?

That looks like a different Kernel Panic then the one discussed in this thread – yours don't mention "watchdog".

Searching the web for "CPU caterr detected" might give you some info.

Edit:
Might be hardware in your case:

I just noticed something interesting in your crash report. It states the release as RELEASE_ARM64_T8010. I could be wrong but it looks like the processor type is referenced? There is an ARM processor being used in the MacBook Pro?

EDIT: I just looked and the touch bar uses an ARM processor.
