I wanted to buy the Mini but will wait out till this issue is resolved. Apple charges top dollars for their products. Are they offering me a discount for this issue? No. So I will wait.
The discount is already in the price in that a 60Hz display is cheaper than the iPad Pro’s 120Hz ProMotion display. There is no software update to turn an LCD which refreshes at 60Hz into one which refreshes at 120Hz. If you put any LCD 60Hz display under a slow-mo camera you will see jelly-scroll because line-by-line refresh is just how that tech works.

If you’re someone who is sensitive to jellyscroll then only a 120Hz display will do.

Current Mini 6 display belongs on <$100 class of Amazon Fire and Walmart ONN tablets and not on a $500+ tablet. Tim Cook testing consumers' tolerance so he can double his $750 compensation package.
My kids (3 and 5) have the latest generation fire 7 tablets and we have the an 8 HD model. Jelly scrolling aside the display on the new mini is a lot better than the display on the fire tablets. Higher resolution, better Colours, laminated display. The kindle screen feels like cheap plastic.

Not true at all. I am sensitive to jelly scroll. The mini 6 was unusable for me. Now I'm back on my older, cheaper mini 5 which has no jelly scroll in portrait orientation and a far less noticeable amount in landscape orientation. And of course it's only 60 Hz too.

60 Hz LCD does not have to be anywhere near as bad as the mini 6. As proven by Apple with the mini 5.

The iPad Mini 6 does not jellyscroll in landscape. An LCD will only jellyscroll in one orientation (depending on the side of the display controller) and the display controller is mounted vertically for the Mini 6. The Mini 5 will too jellyscroll depending on the location of its display controller. If you’re sensitive to jellyscroll then the Mini 5 will not help you unless the display controller is placed horizontally and you’re only using the tablet in portrait.

If you’re interested in an explanation on the science behind it, there is an article here: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/202...tempts-to-explain-the-jelly-scrolling-effect/

It explains why jellyscroll happens and compares the iPad Pro, Air 4 and the Mini 6.

I strongly suspect that had someone with a following on Twitter instead posted footage of an Air 4 jellyscroll back in Autumn 2020, there would have been countless posts and threads on here about:
- why people are returning their Air 4
- complaints that the Air 4 is garbage
- that Tim Cook sleeps on a bed of piles of money as he laughs himself to sleep while he sells inferior screens etc.

People got worked up and led by the nose on this one.

Exactly. The bandwagon effect is amazing, isn't it?

I find comments like yours rather amusing. It's such a simplistic way of seeing things. Just explain away every problem by saying it's just a group think thing.

Before the release I read lots of news about the Mini 6. People were complaining that the A15 chip was downgraded compared to the iPhones. I didn't care. Some were whining(including me) about the higher price tag for 256GB, but in the end I happily paid for it and didn't especially mind. The lack of 120Hz was also spotlighted, but even though I have a phone with 120Hz I didn't care. Some even muttered about the width of the display being a few pixels narrower than Mini 5. Once again I shrugged my shoulders and looked forward to release day.

Then when the jelly effect was mentioned on Twitter I was a bit surprised by it, but didn't think it would be a too big of a deal. I was just excited that a Liquid screen Mini was finally coming with much greater performance than I could have hoped for.

But lo and behold, as I was trying it out on that Friday the 24th, the jelly effect was just so pronounced and egragious to me that I was a bit shocked. The wobbly combination of word and pictures on the Youtube app and the tilting text paragraphs whilst scrolling just made my heart sink.

But nooo, it's just because I'm such a weak person that I, like a dog on a leash, follow my masters on the Internet.

Glad I could provide you some amusement. I don't recall naming names for those who are simply jumping on the bandwagon of the latest thing to be outraged about in social media, but you'd have to be pretty naive to deny that's the case for many people. The fact remains it doesn't seem to bother a lot of people and some don't even notice it. It's sort of like the "notch" in that respect (and we see the bandwagon effect there too - people who would probably be totally fine with it start reading more and more complaining and start to think, "Yeah, this bothers me too!"). If you're going to go looking for issues, you're always bound to find some.

I think most of those jumping on the bandwagon are those who don't even own the device. Like with everything people who have no experience because of not owning the device write how bad this "bug" is. Faulty devices etc. Most of those people don't own the device themselves. They just have so much time available to talk about things they have zero knowledge about.

If someone owns the device I believe at least most of those who express concern or problem with these issues do not just jump on the bandwagon but tell how they are experiencing it. I myself don't have a jelly problem. I very hardly see it and it doesn't bother me if I do which is rare. So I guess I am lucky. But I understand people having problems. If Dieter Bohn and Co wouldn't have written about this maybe those users still have problems with the display but couldn't identify the problem. They would just get headache or whatever and don#t know the reason for it.

Most of those really, really bashing Apple for issues are those not owning the device themselves.

I am happy that I have no problems because I guess I would be pissed off too if I couldn't use the Mini 6 because of display technology. I just couldn't wait for this upgrade and would have been very disappointed afterwards. Same goes for PWM on OLED iPhones. If I couldn't use the 12/13 Mini I would again be sooooo disappointed. I love the 12 and 13 Mini and iPad mini 6. Well see, first world problems haha.

I think it’s the opposite. There are many posts from people saying they thought this was nothing until they actually received theirs and were shocked at how awful it is. This thing is a piece of junk and we should file a class action lawsuit over it imo

You can’t be serious. (Surely you are being sarcastic.) Don’t buy it in the first place, or if you’ve bought it, return it. Problem solved. Nobody is holding a gun to your head or taking money from your wallet to force you to buy it. If it doesn’t suit you for whatever reason, you aren’t forced to spend money on it or use it.

Yeah, I can agree with a lot of what you said. What makes me frown though is when some swipe every complaint and complainee under the rug by claiming that they are simply easily manipulated. But I can sympathize with the points you gave.

This is what I did instead of jumping on the iPhone 4. I simply kept my iPhone 3G going for 3 years before jumping onto the 4S.

People tend to forget that Apple didn't discount anything until the next model comes out, and for any type of compensation, especially when it came to the iPhone 4, were free bumper cases, or $15 back. They didn't recall a single thing.

Regardless, to me, this jelly scrolling issue, and "once you see it, you can't unsee it", simply reminds me of the hidden triangle in the FedEx logo. People say the same thing about that; however, it only can be unseen when you choose not to see it. The same can apply here. If you tune your mind to not see it (read: willfully ignore it), you won't see it.

Another imaginary problem.
I don't have a horse in this race. I don't own a Mini 6 and I never had any plans to purchase one, as I'm quite happy with my Air 4. I'm also quick to call out people online for their ridiculous over reactions to various "gates" with Apple products. It's my mindset that if you look hard enough for a problem you will always find one, but if you have to look hard it doesn't really count.

All that being said, I used a Mini 6 for the first time today, and yes, the jelly scrolling is surprisingly noticeable. I wouldn't say it would be deal breaking if I had intended to buy one though.

Jobs might have blamed customers for the way they use products but would have never compromised on the aesthetics of the product itself.

Cook will gladly throw together any random assortment of parts to make a product with high profit margins. He doesn’t care for aesthetics.

For example take the absolute mess that is lightning versus USB. Cook is just going with whichever makes the most money. No consideration beyond that. Jobs would have made a decision that one is better and the demanded all future products used that.
The Apple II had huge reliability issues because Jobs refused to put in a fan. Despite the engineers telling him it needed a fan. They were basically time bombs back in the day because if you used it enough, it would eventually warp and fail. When Jobs came back to Apple, having learned nothing, he released the gorgeous, failure-prone G4 cube. Even hotter, and still fanless.

We can go round and round on this but; Jobs, as brilliant as he was, also made really odd, anti-consumer product decisions based on what he thought was best.

IMHO; the lightning issue has nothing to do with making money. At least not in the "We make more off of lightning ports than USB-C ports" sense. Were that the case, lightning would still be on the iPads. The fact that even the iPad mini has gone to USB-C is absolute proof that the iPhone engineering team simply does not have an upgrade path for the lightning port. It's eventually going to be removed. As crazy as it sounds, swapping to USB-C is a big engineering project that would cost a lot of time and money for a stop-gap. Whereas Apple intends to keep USB-C on Macs and iPads long term, the iPhone will eventually just drop the port.

There's a lot of things I wish Apple would do but at the end of the day, Apple is just a company. They'll make products and I'll choose whether to buy them.

That's why we should take legitimate action...until they "see" the broken system (2nd Nokia to be....)

If anything, history shows that they won't do anything about it to the effect of what you want. They didn't recall the G4 Cube. They didn't include any fans in the Apple II series (Apple II, IIplus, IIe, IIc, IIGS), despite there being issues with heat in them (thankfully, mine doesn't have that problem). They didn't recall the iPhone 4, and that was despite a huge Class Action lawsuit due to Antennagate; the most you got out of that was a $15 check, or a bumper case.

If that history is a pattern, they won't be recalling the mini 6.

This user has made a new forum post about filing a lawsuit claiming it’s affecting people’s “wellbeing”, I am confident in saying this is a joke, because someone cannot be this crazy, surely?
