Cracked in my hands...

So I'm on my recliner reading with my new iPad, reading it in book form with the smart cover on and folded around back.

I'm about to turn in for the night and take my left hand off the iPad to bring the smart cover around and I hear the crack of glass.

The screen literally shattered in my hand, below my right thumb. You can still seem my thumb print.

I did not apply any crazy pressure to this thing, it's never been dropped or even looked at cross eyed. I just made an appointment for the Genius Bar tomorrow. Hopefully they don't expect me to pay for a defective piece of glass. I'm a bit sick to my stomach actually.

You should be fine. There doesn't appear to be an impact point. It's hard to tell but it's probably some kind of stress crack.

Would this be covered under their accidental damage and you get charged a $50 deductible? The actual LCD is recessed from the glass but still unless you apply crazy pressure no way can this happen. Might be a QA issue where the glass is not uniform in thickness and you happened to hit a weak spot? *shrugs*. Sorry to hear.

I don't have Applecare plus on it as I basically trade in for the new model iPad every year (this would be my 3rd iPad).

The LCD underneath is fine and the glass itself didn't seem squishy. I'm not touching it until my Genius appointment at this point though. My grip certainly isn't off the charts....it just shattered beneath my thumb.

The only thing that hit the floor was my jaw.

I've owned enough Apple products, including six new iPads, to conclude that the QC and build quality of it is awful.

Hopefully the genii at Apple will swap this out for the OP.

If you are just testing out how many people will believe this is how it broke.. l would say Apple will most likely replace it. If that actually happened, then I don't know what to say.

It was definitely a WTF? moment.

I've had tons of Apple products over the years, this takes the cake...

My wife was sitting next to me and said "Did I just hear glass crack?"....

There's not a dent or scuff on this thing and hell, up to this point there wasn't a scratch on the glass....

I just had preordered that Glas.t screen protector too......

I'm not saying you aren't telling the truth but I wouldn't doubt if a "genius" tries to say you're lying.

it's because you're using a case that was released as "for new ipad" but was really a guess or just lucky fit. that type of case puts quite a bit of stress on small areas of the corners of the glass, causing a fracture. what brand of case is is, because that is your culprit... greedy case makers rushing to market before product is ready, NOT APPLE

Well, I'm another one of the "few" then. I went through 3 iPhone 4's(yellow/brown stains that never left and a bad flash) at launch and one iPad 2 with horrendous light bleeding(again at launch). Maybe their QC suffers to try and meet demand at the beginning of a run, but to me that was an unacceptable amount of crap to leave the factory. That doesn't stop me from buying apple products though .

Still, OP, that is crazy. That glass is supposed to be tough stuff. There had to be a defect... unless you got hit by a meteor and you got super-human powers without noticing. Just sayin

I noticed when playing Doom, I subconsciously put a lot of thumb pressure on a similar part of the glass where the game's movement control is.

After reading your post, I believe it was simply a defective glass panel... it does happen.

If the genius that insects it, does so carefully, it will be apparent.

If you encounter any resistance, ask for the store manager. Present your case for a replacement in a pleasant matter of fact style.

I feel quite certain that Apple will do the right thing and replace the unit for you.

I had this same issue with an iPad 2 that I had purchased from Best Buy. I had a smart cover on it and took great care of it, but one day (about a week after purchase), the glass cracked in the same place as yours. I did not even pick it up from where it cracked. It just cracked...

No one but you can ever really know I suppose.

All I know is that if I dropped my iPad and the glass shattered, I'd be jumping straight on MacRumors to make a thread saying it "broke in my hand" just so I could refer the Apple person to it as further corroboration of my story.

Anyway, good luck, I hope they replace it. It's nothing to Apple, but a lot to you.

had something impacted the screen (other than my thumb, which the print is visible) I'd imagine you'd see micro fractures of the glass so to speak. The tiny white crushed glass, not more of a stress fracture which, I would say by definition this was. You can see where the peak of the break is lines up to where you apply pressure with your thumb when you grab something.

As to the case, it has a Mareware back cover on it, I used their similar model for the iPad 2. It doesn't actually wrap around over the glass, it stays on the metal lip so to speak.
