Most iPads will show some flex if you watch them closely. It's most noticeable for me when watching someone use a stylus across the table. The sustained pressure moves a slight indentation spot that follows their stylus tip as they write. With their surface at an angle to you as a viewer and reflecting overheads, it's very noticeable. But this is the gorilla/flex glass doing its job.

When I tried forcing an iPad 2 back cover, it pulled down and back on the top and bottom right corners of my iPad 3 glass. This constant pressure forced a slight bowing of the glass in the middle right of the screen. Right about where the OPs crack starts in fact.

Coincidental possibly. But I didn't want to risk it.

It is very possible the glass had a flaw and was installed in the frame putting additional stress on it and all it took was a little push to bring it to a breaking point.

BUT, when I and others look at it, it DOES look like impact damage. Looks like a hard object, like a coffee cup, etc fell on the screen. I would think a regular stress crack would cause a single break from one side of the screen to the other but this has all the signs of an impact cause spider breaks from the center.

You will be at the mercy of the Geek. I would be humble and not indignant!

Let us know:apple:

This.

I have seen people saying their iPad screens just kind of cracked out of nowhere, but it was usually a single line across the screen. This crack spiders out.

Not saying that I don't believe the OP--stranger things have happened. Just saying that I think the genius will think that's an impact point.

HOWEVER, in my experience, if you're just honest with them, they'll help you out. In all the times I've been to the Apple store, I've had only one person be a d bag to me.

Off to the Apple store now...

FYI, the back cover that's on it was made by Marware for the new iPad, it wasn't the iPad 2 model.

2nd, if I dropped something on it or dropped it, I'd say "Damn I'm an idiot, look what I did!"...

I wouldn't be trying to convince a bunch of internet forum members of an elaborate hoax.

Right so we have reached the point on this forum that unless you bow to Apple regardless of what you experience you are classed as a troll. I have declined to put up with the build quality of the iPad 3 (my personal experience) but I have given Apple even more of my cash by buying a £1000 Macbook Air instead. Does that make me a troll too?

Or perhaps just a normal Apple customer.

There is definitely some of that on this forum (and always has been about Apple products), but certain posters far exceed that.

I've heard about spontaneous combustion, but this is definitely worse. Spontaneous iPad screen shattering.

I'm using a Belkin Back Cover for iPad 2 on my new iPad and I can't see why that would matter. Its a tight fit, but its wrapped around the aluminum back of the iPad. No parts of the back cover are touching the screen at all. I can't see why other cases would do the same.

I really hope they replace it for you. I baby my iPad as well and I can definitely imagine myself in your shoes and it doesn't look nice.

[Edit]: Heck, I remember I was pressing the screen really hard to get some air bubbles out when I was applying a screen protector (which I ended up throwing away...) and it still didn't break. Your screen sounds like it was defective. They must exchange it.

You better delete this post from last year. They may think your 3+ year old got a hold of your new iPad....lol.

My 3 year old uses our iPads (well, not my iPad 2) hard and has learned a TON from the apps available. .......

so i'm on my recliner reading with my new ipad, reading it in book form with the smart cover on and folded around back.

I'm about to turn in for the night and take my left hand off the ipad to bring the smart cover around and i hear the crack of glass.

The screen literally shattered in my hand, below my right thumb. You can still seem my thumb print.

I did not apply any crazy pressure to this thing, it's never been dropped or even looked at cross eyed. I just made an appointment for the genius bar tomorrow. Hopefully they don't expect me to pay for a defective piece of glass. I'm a bit sick to my stomach actually.

Good luck!! This situation interests me for some reason, and I'm curious to see how it turns out, so update us when you can!

I, in no way, said you are guilty. I am simply saying it looks like impact damage.

As I said tell the Geek the truth and you might be surprised, they well have seen this before.

he's not talking about the smart cover, in the image you can see there is a snap on case around the edge of the iPad, if this case is not the exact correct size, it could be pulling on the corners, causing stress on the glass.

Sorry, misread. I thought he meant a case that sits on the corners of the glass (like smart covers).

In all honesty, it looks to me like someone sat in it by accident.

Regardless, all the best. Whether you get a new iPad or not doesn't really impact mine one bit.

Wow. That's either really bad luck, or potential proof that screen quality has been dropping on recent iProducts. In perspective, my 3rd gen (2009) Touch is freaking immortal. I recently dropped it while running on pavement. It slid about 10 yards on its screen, and when I picked it up, barely a scratch.
I really hope you get good customer service, because no product should ever break that easily.

To be honest dude, I'm convinced by your story because:

a) Who indeed would try to fool a bunch of random people on a forum.

b) You're still rocking that beautiful iSight camera on your Pro, so you must take good care of your kit.

Hope you had no trouble getting it swapped out!

Bottom line I was met with "I can clearly see what happened, but I'm sorry. We can't replace it under warranty."

My options were pay $300.00 or leave with an $800.00 paper weight.

I paid the $300.00 and sent an email to Tim Cook detailing the experience. iPads shouldn't be exploding in my hand.

Could you have picked the AppleCare+ on this new/refurb one? Just curious.

Hopefully the genius that looks at it doesn't see it that way though. Good luck for real. Either way Im sorry that happened, that really sucks.

Seems odd for the impact point to be there, though. If the iPad dropped on its right edge (as one could assume based on the impact point) then why is the impact point just in the middle? This would be normal if the iPad landed on a corner, the impact point would be noticeable in that respective corner, but here it looks highly unusual and I believe the OP.

That’s a bummer. What was the $300? Did they somehow pro-rate a replacement since it was still within the warranty period?

Unfortunately, the simple answer is you broke it, not that you actually _did_, but for someone assessing the situation, that’s a much easier answer vs. it just exploded with regular use.

I would figure as much since it's difficult to prove. If that glass was stressing in that area I can see that happening.
