Here, where else?
Hello everyone, I hope you're having a wonderful weekend! :)

I got a new rMBP with the AMD M370X barely 3 weeks ago, and it seems to have failed... Had an kernel panic last night and according to the report, it seems like it's the GPU...
When I log in, the bar goes to 20-25% and then the screen becomes black and a click noise can be heard, it continues to load but with an black background and the Apple logo with it's loading bar, allthough the desktop appears and everything works as normal after. However, this does NOT seem like an normal boot to me as my last MBA continued to load the normal loading screen fine.. I called the support 2 days ago and got it booked it for friday at my local Apple Store and it really looks like it's going to be an logic board replacement.. :(

I have a few questions about it:

1. How long will it take?
My MacBook is the most important tool for my company and I can't be without it for long. Some said they've gotten theirs replaced within an hour, and some more than 3 weeks.. And I bought it B2B and not via Apple, so an replacement would probably take ATLEAST 4 days to arrive.

2. Will my data be wiped?
Some said theirs is still there after replacement and some say it's going to be wiped(the phone technician thought the same but he was unsure). I do back it up to my Time Capsule, but some say it's bad to restore from an backup, is that really true? I belive the SSD on the rMBP is NOT soldered so they might be able it over to the new board?

I can happily upload the kernel panic if needed, but it really looks like the GPU from it.
Applogies to such an long post, but I'd like to thank you for reading it!

Update: I re-named the thread after discovering that this is a bug in OS X. Sum up here!

1. Ask at your appointment.

2. They will move the drive to the new logic board if there is no problem detected with the drive. If diagnostics detect a problem with the flash drive hardware then they will replace it.

Don't you guys think it is not anymore GPU problem, but... computer problem? Every single generation of MBP's with dedicated GPUs have problems with them. GT8600M, GM9400, GT330M, Radeon HD6750M, 6490M, and 6770M, GT650M in Retina Macbook Pro, GT750M, and now this.

Is it really GPU problem or...? And the symptoms are exactly the same...

Thanks! That's just what I hoped to hear :)

Radeongate part deux?

Starting to look that way, seen a few others having their M370X failing..

That was my exact thought too! Really dissapointed in Apple right now...

I've never heard of any 9400m or GT 750 problems.
[doublepost=1452366149][/doublepost]OP: 3 weeks is only 1 week beyond the return period. If your GPU really did burn out in such a short period of time, I'd ask for a replacement.

GT750M Im not bringing up without a reason. At least Ive seen few(a lot) reports of them failing from people who actually service the MacBook Pros on Polish Apple forum: MyApple.pl.

Thanks for the replies guys!

I'll post an update here on Friday when I know for sure what's wrong! I haven't had any panics tonight(yet) either and things seems to be running good except for the login:)

Also, I took another look at the panic log, and it doesn't seem to look the same as others when their GPU has failed.. Odd but it's definitely GPU related.

Having the same problems as well, I'm about to be on my 3rd logic board now because mine keeps kernel panicking. I'm already in talks to get apple to buy it back or let me get something else

I haven't tried that yet, if the hardware test at the store passes, that's probably the best thing to try in order to resolve this..

Haven't you done the hardware test already?

I think you just restart and hold down "d" for Apple diagnostic test. There's a brief one that takes a few min, then a longer thorough one.

I'm imagining that's all Apple will do for the test..

That could just be a firmware glitch have you tried reinstalling OSX on boot up??

That was done once by me and again by a SimplyMac... I'm at it right now having my Mac being sent to depot for the second time

I spoke with 3 different technicians and none recomended the AHT(or more like they didn't mentioned it) and advised me to get it diagnosed on friday in-store.
I thought Apple had much better tests at their stores and at authorized repair shops? Last time I tried to run the tool last year my screen was just black with a white line on the screen while the fans ramped up and I couldn't do anything but to force a shutdown.. But that was with my OLD MBA and it doesn't necessarily mean this one will too, but it's already booked in so I think I'll just let them use their tools;)
Could it be related to FileVault?

That's also one of the reasons why I'd also like to have it diagnosed at the store as I'm unsure the normal test bundled with OS X is able to detect it... I'm quite concerned if it keeps break even though I replace the board... If this is a issue that'll just keep on, I feel like Apple should investigate it and possibly call in for a repair program. I really hope that the next rMBP'll have a GPU as solid as the 750M..

Also, I'll update you shortly(1-2 hours?) if our panics looks the same!

Well sadly for me I don't have an Apple Store nearby otherwise I'd take it there. Spoke again with a Mac senior and apparently they either didn't document or didn't at all replace the logic board so as far as Apple is concerned my situation is unique.

I personally don't buy it, this has the classic tin whiskers signs and I am aggressively working to get a replacement as a I am completely convinced this is not fixable

Alright, I'm really sad that Apple ignores this and treats us affected users as it never happened before.. Surely it must've been reported but I guess their support are cut off from colleges that aren't in the same department(I'd guess country). Otherwise I'm really disappointed in them.

I just took a look at my panic report and yours.. And as I feared, they seem to be EXACTLY the same :(
How often does yours crash? Been sitting here worried 2 nights in a row that it'll crash any second and I really don't like it.. I'm not able to back up until Wednesday, worried that the crash(es) will corrupt data.

I waited to get this machine every day for 7 months, I was thinking of coding sites and apps, designing and playing some games with the M370X, what happens? This.

I honestly don't know what to say at this point yet as I'm worried for my machine, but it sure as hell is absurd.

Well if I get anywhere with the 5-6th senior I'm speaking with who appears to be knowledgable I will pass his info along to you if I get a buyout.

This may honestly be a bug because I almost exclusively use this card in bootcamp and it hasn't artifacted or given any sign of trouble (I've overclocked for years and know what to look for). I'd also mention that so far my Mac has never crashed in bootcamp and you may have success disabling integrated graphics switching to resolve the problem.

But either way I agree this is *********. What causes mine to fail is light internet browsing and if I had to guess it occurs when switching between integrated GPU to the discrete.

Also for your info my serial number is: {SNIP}, purchase date was 5/28/15 at bestbuy

My crashing is completely random some days it'll do it several times others I'll go week(s) before it happens again

Thanks!

Currently I'm watching a Twitch stream in Safari(no flash) and it hasen't crashed, yet... I mentioned in an earlier post that I was just watching a YouTube video, unpaused it and BAM, kernel panic... Does 1080@60FPS encoding really trigger the dGPU to get in action? I think the Iris Pro should handle it perfectly well, damn my old HD 5000 NEVER lagged and dropped frames... I think I've seen before that sometimes web pages causes the OS to switch between the iGPU and dGPU so much it crashed, but that this still exsists in modern models?

I really hope that I'll be fine until friday, also do you use Chrome or Safari when the dGPU crashes?
I heard there's issues with GPU drivers in 10.11, but did it already fail on you while on Yosemite?
I'm sorry if I missunderstof you before, but did you say that they never replaced the board?

I bought mine B2B and they got it sent from the local Apple warehouse when I ordered it, it can't have been there for long, max 2-3 weeks.

Writing this on my iPad while it streams.. I'm too paranoid it'll crash again:(

Yea you'd be surprised how little it takes to pop the dGPU, it's not that it can't handle it its just the threshold on switchable systems is very very low. Just opening chrome is enough to do it which is why I use Safari.

I'm not sure how familiar you are with Windows and overclocking in general but if you were to use something like CPUZ you can see how violently the CPU frequency thrashes during very basic use the same thing happens for the GPU both for enabling and disabling but also what frequency it operates on.

Hell this could be some kind of weird voltage sag that's causing it now that I think about it. The old Nelhalem i7s and current Visheras from AMD are notorious for it. When you push a chip right up to the edge with overclocking the margins go away and just because it's stable at 1.45v doesn't mean it'll stay that way during normal use.

Those chips would be ok on heavy loads but during light usage when power saving features kicked on the voltage would sag either a lot or just enough to crash the system forcing you to pad the voltage above minimums to keep the sagged voltage at 1.45 or recalibrate the PWM and MOSFET tolerances to compensate. It could just as easily by that than a bug or something related to the tin whisker effect the 2011s saw

Hi everyone,

I own a Mid-2015 rMBP with dGPU, too. And I have the same glitch at startup (after the bar reaches around 25% there is a short interruption, and after that the black screen with Apple logo appears and boot up is finished). And sometimes, I hear a clicking sound at startup, too.

BUT ... I own the rMBP for six months now, and I hadn't had a single kernel panic. May be luck ... or the glitches mentioned above may also appear if the dGPU (and the other hardware) is fine.

I am really curious to know the result of the hardware test at the Apple store...

Best regards,
Stephan
