Had mine for over a week now and even though it’s not perfect I find it to still be an amazing device. Have no intention of returning it. Would definitely install OS 2 it’s so much better. When I watched the immersive dinosaur video it was almost too much, nearly had to take VisionPro off before the end.

I’ve not checked but are the iPad variants of the Adobe or Affinity design apps available on the VisionPro App Store?
Hi. The iPad variants don't have the functionality I need for my photography. I shoot in DNG or on film and then scan and use lighroom to process before moving to PS for any final work. some examples here https://www.flickr.com/photos/joshbear/

Agree completely on the amazement factor. In my opinion the experience is unmatched for TV / Films. I love the dinosaurs too. :p First time I watched it my wife asked why I was laughing with excitement.

Hi, Yes, productivity could be a real use for many people and lead them to "Better" usage than me. The reality for me is I retired at age 53 a few months ago after 32 years in the Biotech industry. If the VP had been available a year ago it would have been a game changer for me. To be able to stand in a room and surround myself with "Data" would have been exactly what I was looking for.

I have a samsung 49 inch monitor and used that with the MPB and loved having multiple windows open so the VP would have led to hyper excitement. That said I have spoken to a few friends about the VP and use for work and to a person they all said "Thank God it wasn't available as you would never have had it off your face!"🤣

My current productivity needs are limited as 3D printing, Photography and design are just hobbies and don't take up the bulk of my time. So I am taking that into account as I assess whether I will keep the VP or not.

That said, if photoshop or Lightroom were native apps and I could edit photos without using the Mac then that would be a real plus. The the ability the stand in a virtual room and edit photos would be incredibly useful.

None of the above changes just have amazing this device is though.

Regards

Josh
Funnily enough I’m in my late 40s and retired too but I have found that retiring so early can lead to boredom. so I continue to do digital creative work because I enjoy it. So I’m hoping the avp will find a place in that workflow.

Check out the app called The Archive. If you’re a Trek fan you will definitely like! 🖖

Glad to hear you’re enjoying the Vision Pro too!
Wait wait wait, is this Stage 9 reborn in a web interface? I just found it here, and it seems to be streaming it from a server somewhere. Is that what the Archive app is doing, or is it rendering it live on the Vision Pro? (I mean I would try it but I've not convinced my wife to spend three and a half grand on an AVP)

Anyway, this is brilliant. A while ago I went though Stage 9 in VR on a HP Reverb I 'borrowed' from work and while my rubbish old PC struggled with the framerate it was a blast to just wander around the D. I also crashed a runabout in the main hanger while I tried to fly it out.

So is this all authorised, or is CBS liable to fire off takedown requests if they find it?

LOL. I am the same! Bored out of my tiny mind. Don't get me wrong I don't miss being online talking to my team 15 hours a day but I miss the excitement of being part of a team, and delivering new treatments for rare diseases. I need to find something else

I had to look up what Stage 9 is. It sounds similar but a different effort by different people. The Archive is backed by the Roddenberry group so it’s official. The Vision Pro version of The Archive is the same material that can be found on the website you linked to at Roddenberry. The main difference is the on Vision Pro all of the rooms are in VR. They are static rooms so you can’t move around. It’s very cool though! It was definitely a factor in my VP purchase. Last I read they have plans for future expansion in addition to the one in April. Wedding vows usually include some about richer and poorer. With a VP purchase you get to experience both!

This is very cool, thank you for introducing us to it, even if people like me have to experience it in an inferior 2D mode! I wonder if Apple will let you set custom 'environments' for the Vision Pro in the future.

That’s been my hope! I’d love the Environments available within a given app to be made available everywhere and used with any app. Ive heard others suggest being able to watch a show from the bridge of the Enterprise where the viewscreen is where your show displays. 🤤

I keep trying "The Archive" but almost all of the experiences are blurry. There was one tour of a deck which was sharp. If they can improve the sharpness ...

That’s interesting. I’ve never thought of them as blurry. 🤔

Day 10 - A sad goodbye.

Hi all just closing off my experience with the VP. I returned it to the apple store today. First time ever I have used their return policy and it was flawlessly simple. I was asked the reasons and the staff member wanted to hear about my experience.

As always this is my experience / opinion based on my use need and it will be different (better and worse) for others. The VP is an incredible step forward in VR. Watching movies, TV, surfing and looking through your own photos and videos is better than on any other device. I am not eloquent enough to write how joyous it was to watch movies in one of the environments whilst sat in my garden. I will miss that.

But, on a graph of use cases for me vs cost I just couldn't justify it. I think at £2K I would have kept it, maybe even £2.5K. but that extra just pushed it too far. If I was working on spreadsheets / other data then that would have helped as I mentioned a few days ago.

So it went back and now I wait for a slightly cheaper model or some killer app that will make the difference. I am certain I will be back. I will continue to follow this forum to enjoy other owners experiences.

Regards

Josh

Ach. I’ve been waiting on your roundup to see what I should do. Very much on the fence. So far I’ve loved a few things (mostly the movies, immersive tv shows, spatial videos and photos, and the environments). I don’t find it uncomfortable. I do find myself with red marks on my forehead every time.

I’ve always loved gen one devices really. You’re paying for the fact they do something new, different or novel and you get an early experience of things to come (often by a good year or so). I loved the gen one iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad etc. My experience of the VP had been closer to the gen one Apple Watch, but that was massively improved with a software update.

However, I found virtual desktop a bit challenging - eye strain, resolution, multitasking (I often watch videos when I work and this is really tricky on the pro). I also find the focus and blurring quite off putting. I don’t think I have a dud device as it’s inconsistent, but text and app windows sometimes have a blur that is mild but distracting, and another effect - I don’t know how to describe - that you used to see with old cathode ray tvs. Where it looks like a line(s) disrupting the display / text where you focus, particularly noticeable with black text on a white background.

I do love it otherwise. I have until tomorrow. But I fear it may become a tv and film device and the price is quite steep for that. Not too different to what 4k OLED tvs cost back in the day though.

I reached for my iPad this am. I found it much easier to interact with, much more portable, and I guess I’ve adapted how I work to how I use that. It’s a pleasure to read on, I can switch to a movie, or I can set it up behind my Mac when I work.

I haven’t worked out what the VP is for, in my life and work yet… I wanted someone to tell me so I can keep it with slightly less guilt I guess. :/

For what it’s worth, I had similar thoughts when I bought mine. Ultimately for me the VP enables viewing experiences that are not possible or not as enjoyable on an iPad. It’s just like when I bought my first iPad. I could do everything on my iPhone like look a pictures or watch a show, but the iPad was a big step up. That’s the way I see the Vision Pro for my uses.

I’m taking my first major trip soon since I’ve had the VP. I’m excited about capturing a ton of panoramic photos, Spatial Videos and just 4K video and normal pictures. They’re all going to look amazing in Vision Pro. Of course that’s not the only reason I kept my VP, but it is an important use for me.

Ultimately when I thought about all of the apps, Environments (like Disney Tatooine), Immersive Videos, 3D and 4K movies plus all of my own content (existing and future) I’d rather be without the money than give up all of those viewing experiences.

Since then VisionOS 2 beta has released. I haven’t tried it personally but folks on here have posted quite a bit about the new Photos feature turning existing photos into Spatial Photos. One guy said he spent the entire evening just looking at old photos in a new way. I can’t wait to have that!

I‘ve just mentioned the fun side of things. Obviously VP has much to offer in terms of productivity too. I think everyone has their uses.

And this is just the beginning!

It’s a huge improvement and the photo conversion feature is amazing! I now browse my photos on an almost daily basis.

I second that. The photo conversion alone makes it worth the price. Old photos of relatives long gone, friends from the past and the children when they were young are so realistic. Its priceless. It's worth the price of the AVP to enjoy them now. Knowing Apple, the cheaper version will take longer than expected to be released.

I use my iPhone to take spatial movies more than ever. And I take more photos that I know will show so much better in 3D

I'm pretty sure now the content is streamed rather than rendered on device, so it might be an issue with the internet connection. Also Unreal does some really aggressive motion blur which might be it.

Also, this is waaay off topic, but I was just skimming the Enterprises on the Roddenberry Archive and saw the Enterprise J:

It seems to have been retconned into being a warp capable Biodome? I'm not mad, it's just a fascinating new spin on this behemoth.

Yeah I had a very high profile exciting career so the quiet life is taking some adapting too. But it was also a stressful too so it’s swings and roundabouts. My avp arrived. I’m 99 percent sure at this point that I’ll be returning it. It’s just not comfortable to wear and doesn’t have enough compelling use cases. Shame

Very reasonable take. Apple’s own engineers have said they don’t think it’ll hit its stride until gen 3 or 4. We got a wait ahead of us, but it’s exciting. The smartphone has peaked for a few years and it’s gotten to the point every september comes around when they announce the new iphone and it’s meh. But the Vision Pro is the ground floor of a brand new thing. Feels like 2007 again with the first iphone. First gen its always too expensive with a bunch of issues. Few years later it turns into “finally worth buying”. 10 years? This might be a small pair of goggles the price of a high end iphone and people won’t even want to pick up their iphone at home

Nearly all of us suffer that 'new tech buzz'. We are so hyped up about the new tech and what it can do that sensible thinking goes out the window. For the huge majority of us it starts to kick in after a week to two weeks where the our over hyped senses start to cool down. We start to come to our senses and begin to look at if the new tech is really something worthwhile and for the most part it isn't because we are so hyped up with the buzz of the new tech prevents us from thinking rationally.

The 'buzz' started to cool down for the OP and as a result started to think rationally and came to the conclusion that whilst the VP has some very good strong points (entertainment), it is let down by it's productability usage (office, photo editing, 3d drawing, stuff like that).

The thing is, what the OP experienced is virtually the same thing many other VP owners have experienced with the comments being virtually the same which is that the VP is great for entertainment use but is lackluster in it's productability usage.

It is also ironic that the same comments about it's price is almost universal amongst VP owners/users in that due to it's lackluster productability usage the VP's value is worth approx $2,000/£2,000. If you read the many comments posted by VP owners/users you would see they would happily pay that price because of how good it is for entertainment use.

The problem many of us face with new tech is do we return it because we cannot justify the price of keeping it or do we keep it in the hope that new things will be developed for it for us to justify keeping it.

I had some comfort issues but using the top strap pretty much sorted that. Re quiet life, I have thrown myself into learning 3d printing. (see photos below. Note the MK5 IM Helmet was purchased. The rest are my own). My wife has started to question my sanity. To be fair so have I 🤣.

Agree completely. Of course if the productivity side gets a major boost in OS3 / 4 or the price comes down then I will be back as quick as I can.
