So, a user in a different thread brought to my attention a certain video blogger who makes videos explaining basic concepts of photography. He's just plainly wrong in many aspects, and while I'd usually just let it go and not care, he has lots of views, and people are taking him seriously, so I feel like we should explain where he's wrong.

Here's his channel:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDkJEEIifDzR_2K2p9tnwYQ

He mixes concepts like bokeh and focus breathing, and light gathering ability and depth of field, so it's rather important to set the record straight.

Use this thread to discuss him and his wrong ideas, or any other concept you don't fully understand, and we'll try to explain it. Collective intelligence at its best.

Have you written to Tony Northrup and pointed out his errors, or are you just doing that here? If he's so wrong perhaps try telling him. I've watched a few of his review videos and he says if anything is wrong let him know. And if you don't get anywhere, but you are so right, then go create your own videos, books, etc. A little thread on here however isn't going to resolve anything.

Are you saying the laws of physics changed since then? ;)

LOL - definitely not, same now as at the start of the thread, a 70-200/2.8 is still a 70-200/2.8 and that is still the best way to describe it, from an exposure point of view, not from a DoF PoV or a noise PoV, and any other differences are a function of the body, not the lens.

But he did revive this beauty of a thread :)

I think it's an overall educational read that explains the physics of photography.

Yes, long story short, "its just physics" LOL

you are so right, then go create your own videos, books, etc.

Wow, did we all drop through a wormhole into kindergarten? Next up: "My Dad is bigger than your Dad"....

If you read the thread you will find Tony is represented...at least that seemed to be what the poster was indicating. I lost the will to live. Physics is physics and <lens> manufacturers certainly aren't misleading anyone by their descriptions.

Errr, no. but that's exactly what the original post sounded like. Not that I care, you can all discuss physics. I'm off to take some photos instead.
