Something i've found to be REALLY annoying is when i:
-twitch (dont run source - run medium usually)
-stream tv-shows

The comp. get very hot and frequently run up to 98 degrees celcius which turns the fans to 6000rpm.

I also dont run any programs in the background.

Any solutions? Anyone else have this problem? (I run on a 15 mbp)

I hope you are the only one experimenting this, because I don't want to start hearing the fans all day long, I watch a lot of videos.

weird...i'm running the 2415q off a mac mini and don't get any over heating issues with video playback...

Yeah, i watch alot of videos too, and not beeing able to watch twitch@source or youtube 1080p60hz without fans kicking in is very disapointing.

I've tried both in clam-shell mode and open. I will experience more with this....

I do run chrome, which i know is not the most efficient. I will DL and try with firefox/safari

ok cool, let us know....I'm still debating between this screen or the Dell U2515H (when it becomes available in Canada). The thing is I don't like the font rendeing on my Dell U2312hm....I don't like it when I see some blue shadows between some letters.. (ex: ll

This thread has had a lot of useful info on these monitors and how they work more or less well with various Macs. However, I am still a bit unclear on whether or not these Dell monitors (I'd get the 27in) are a good choice for use with a Mac Mini. If I read a few posts correctly it seems that the Mini cannot handle it at full resolution or at 60hz and may need multiple connection (or even separate software).

Am I understanding the comments correctly? And, if so, is there a better option for pairing with a Mini that will work better? I would like to achieve the best performance for the display that I can but at the same time hope to keep it simple if possible.

Thanks!

I also have a u2713hm, so today i tried to use both of them with the MBP on a mStand (which should lower temp) in shell mode. (to be clear: both are connected).

I have some programs (word, excel, pdf) running.
I run Safari + twitch (medium).

When i have the twitch on u2713hm temps is about 70C. When i run it on P2415q its about 90C.

I would say if the main purpose is to watch videos, i'd go with the u2515h.
If you do however use it for text, the p2415q is amazing.

Give us the exact model number/date/year and config info of your Mac Mini and we can give you much better answers. :apple:

if you only connect 1 monitor, does it do the same spinning?

Thanks for the answers in advance - much appreciated!!

It would be a brand new model (just about to order it) - planning to get the $699 version with no upgrades so 2.6GHz dual core i5 chip, 8GB RAM, Intel Iris Graphics and running on the latest version of the OS X Yosemite. I would plan to attach the display using the Mini DisplayPort out on the Mac to the DisplayPort in on the display. Not sure what I would do for speakers but probably just get the Dell sound bar under the display because I don't want separate speakers.

Man, there are whole threads on this.

Personally, I would avoid 4K on a Mac Mini, based on what I have read. The graphics are just not suitable for that.

Go here on these forums for a ton of info:

I have the p2715q and 2 rMBPs
Work - late 2013 with discrete GPU running 10.9.5
Personal - mid 2014 with discrete GPU running 10.10.2

When I first got it, I used it for a few days with the work computer and had no issues w/ hidpi resolutions. Everything was perfect. Then I switched over to a project on my personal for a few weeks and had no issues with hidpi resolutions.

When I reconnected it back to my work computer, it refuses to recognize it and will only let me go to 2560x1440 scaled, nothing higher or hidpi looks like modes, but my personal computer continues to work fine with it.

I'm at a loss how to get my work computer to "reset" or rerecognize it and enabled the higher resolutions again. I've reset the PRAM, but is there a setting, plist I should delete?

Anyone got the 2415Q shipped from Amazon in Europe (UK or Germany)? The shipping time says "Usually dispatched within 1 - 3 months" and it's been like that since the display was put up on the site.

I don't agree with the negative feedback. I am using a very similar mini (but 16gb ram and ssd drive) and it works really good at 52hz (not enough gpu bandwidth to achieve the 60hz). I've even watched some 4k trailers and they look good! The only problem is that, ok, the animations of the os they are not as smooth as if I work in 1440p 60hz, for example, but they are still smooth enough and everything works fast, no fans, no heating...
Once you realise that you need to have they both dp and hdmi plugged in for the monitor to be recognized as a uhd display (otherwise, only with dp, for any odd reason, the macos thinks it is a 1440p monitor and rejects the switchresx 4k 52hz setup), it works quite good.
I hope I helped you, and really, you won't regret having the mini with this great screen. Looks awesome, and they both gadgets have very similar external look, they match very good.

I am not familiar with switchresx - what if I don't want to add it or use it? Can I run the monitor at 1440p at 60hz (obviously only benefiting partially from the capabilities of the monitor) or alternatively run it at 4k but at 30hz? How does 1440p look? Thinking that worse comes to worse if I don't want to screw around or it is buggy, then I can use it at 1440p.

By the way, what are you doing for audio since the monitor doesn't have speakers (I don't want externals that take up desk space and so was thinking about sime type of sound bar under the monitor, either Dell or another company).

On a separate note, at the time you looked into and bought the Dell, did anyone consider the Asus PB287Q which seems to have the same capabilities for around the same price?

You mean 1440 "low-res"?, i.e. not HiDPI 1440? It looks pretty bad at 1440 low-res. 1080 should look pretty good though.

Will it do HiDPI 1440? I guess I don't know.

So are you saying that HiDPI 1080 will look better than regular 1440?

I don't know what will work or not with your Mac. But I have the P2715Q, and when I try "low-res" modes on my Mac Pro, they don't look so great (and I don't mean compared to 4K). I also tried the P2715Q with my 2013 MBA, and it just doesn't look very good at 1440 or 1080 (again, "low-res"). Not terrible, but I also have Dell 30" 2560x1600 displays, and my impression is it looks much sharper than the P2715Q at 2560x1440 in low-res mode.

HiDPI 1080 @ 60Hz looks awesome on my MacPro (that's what I use)! My MBA isn't capable of any HiDPI modes at 60Hz. I haven't bothered trying SwitchResX.

I took delivery of two P2715Q monitors today, and am still getting used to one of them.

One works great, and the other refused to work with DP/mDP but worked OK using HDMI. I'm using the working monitor right now to type this and the text looks seriously nice (I'm using 1080x1920 @60Hz, rotated to portrait mode to type this). Connected to my late-2013 rMBP with discrete graphics now.

The second monitor is going back ASAP. I thought it was me or my Macs that weren't working, or maybe the DP/mDP cable(s) I was using, but it's the monitor - it just wouldn't recognize any cable connected to its DP or mDP ports; I also swapped cables with the working monitor and ports on my Mac. So, I get to deal with Dell and FedEx again - good times...

At least for one monitor, I'm so happy... I haven't tried any SwitchResX yet, maybe tomorrow when I've got a bit more patience!

About working 1440p 60hz or 4k 30hz, you will have no problems connecting your mini to the monitor via hdmi. It will be detected automatically and no issues with that. The issues come with 4k at 50hz or more, then you have to use switchresx and dp+hdmi to make it possible. About switchresx, I didn't have any idea about using it (in fact I had never used switchresx nor mac before I bought the mini this year) and it's just following the steps many people share in the forums to get the 50hz. It really worths. At 30hz the mouse is a bit...laggy.

About the sound bar, in my case, I have a good sound equipement in the livingroom, and I transfer the sound to it via bluetooth from the mini (when I am listening to the music, for example). For system notifications and this kind of things, the internal speaker of the mini is enough...I checked the dell sound bar though, and was ready to buy it, but I can't tell you anything about that, since I haven't bought it at the end.

That's a TN panel which offers good response time for gaming but crappy colour and viewing angles compared to IPS panels like the ones in these Dell displays.

Just bought the P2415Q in Croatia, Europe. Revision is A01, manufactured in December. I think the earlier ones were A00.

Especially for a 4K display, the 2415's response time isn't bad. Comes out to just about a frame which at 60Hz is pretty good. Since I do my twitchy gaming on my console hooked up to a 1080p monitor it wasn't a dealbreaker for me.
