Should I install it on my personal iPhone? I can’t wait to try it but I don’t have a secondary device. I have an iPhone 8 (64gb), so my concern is mostly about the battery life and storage usage. Or should I wait?
Probably should wait. Betas are not typically optimized for battery performance so if that’s your concern then wait. On the other hand you can always go back to the released version if it doesn’t work out for you. Just requires some effort AND A GOOD BACKUP SAVED SOMEWHERE. (Preferably not just iCloud) If you rely on iCloud backup be sure to not overwrite it with an iOS 14 version after you install.

You are aware you can always go back if there are severe issues that affect your usage, yes?
With iTunes no longer supporting apps, restoring backups takes a lot longer now, though. That downtime may not be acceptable particularly if the iPhone is essential to one’s telework.

True. There is some effort no question, but not like a "no turning back" scenario if things get really bad. That's all I meant.

Absolutely. I just meant that I would never install the first beta on my daily driver, because even though you can in fact go back, what if something happened to your iPhone/iPad during work or something and you are not near a Mac to downgrade, which means you could possibly be screwed the rest of the day.

That is all I meant.

:apple:

I normally wait until b2 or b3 (or more, sometimes) before dropping the dev betas of a major release on my phone, but I'm gonna take the plunge. Currently doing a local iTunes backup (in case I need to revert), then will finally dismiss that red 1 badge that's been sitting on my Settings app and put 14 on there.

Of course, by the time my 512GB 11 Pro Max finishes backing up (using 504GB), b2 might very well be out, haha.

I did it and it's very good so far. I wasn't a fan of iOS13. So far, it seems very good. Only Day 1 though. I also did Watch OS7 and that's very impressive. Tonight I will try the sleep tracking.

I know it's a beta, if it crashes, it crashes, but this is actually quite stable.

First bug so far. Swiping left from the 4th row of app icons doesn't work. Works ok from any other icon, just not the fourth row on any screen. Bug submitted :)

I'm actually quite impressed so far. This definitely does not feel like a b1 in many respects. It's fast (feels faster than iOS 13), even inside apps like Facebook; in ~12 hours of use, I've only had a single app crash on me; I've yet to come across an app that doesn't work, etc.

Very pleased.

Odd. I have no problem swiping left from anywhere on the screen, and after seeing this post, I've tried not just from the fourth row, but from all rows and all columns of all rows. 100% swipe left success rate. iPhone 11 Pro Max.

Had iOS 14 installed on my back up phone. But it has been so good that I put it on my main device. I’m sure I will regret that in time.

Everything has been perfect so far, except Mario Kart and Pokemon Go, which load and then crash.

Everything else seems ok.

It is a case of people having a developers account to gain early access. All good developers would realize that this BETA is to help them build apps for iOS14, not to test who’s apps don’t work on a BETA. They would also have a device specifically to run the iOS14 BETA, and for it not to be their primary device.
It happens every year. Even the public BETA is so Apple can have people test to see if the new features are working well, and to distinguish which reviews are likely going to be people annoyed at things they have no control over, like individual 3rd party apps not working.
I'm going to play devils advocate a bit. Once the public beta is out people should be making noise that apps don't work. I have tested almost every Beta even before the public betas were a thing. I can't tell you how many times an app was broken and the response was well its still beta. Then the OS launches and guess what? Still broken. The point is to be ready for fall and some developers in the past waited until after Final release to even try to fix things.

Granted in the past you couldn't launch an app update that leveraged the new OS update until after final. Apple has changed thier stance on this likely because of the things I've highlighted and public betas being a thing.

I'm not saying be annoying or write bad reviews but do be vocal. The answer is somewhere in-between. Don't be suprised things don't work. The new OS beta lifecycle should mean that by the final beta month most apps are ready to go.

Public betas exist to make more than just the base OS ready for fall in my opinion. Too easy in past years for developers to say well I'm not going to fix anything until GM/Final.

The thing is though Starling is one of the worlds largest fintech companies. It is a bank that you can only access via an app (or browser if you are a business customers).
The company was built by developers, rather than being built by money people trying to sneak into tech.

There is zero chance that their developers and even everyone who works at the company wouldn’t have been aware of WWDC and that it was likely to reveal iOS 14. I’d say almost all of them would have been watching the event, and possibly had already tried to have dialog with Apple over how iOS 14 could offer performance enhancements and new features.
There is zero chance that as soon as they were able to get the SDK for iOS 14 that they wouldn’t be working on an app. They would likely have an iOS 14 app completed within a few days, and ready to be released for the official release date of iOS 14.
What’s more annoying is that the people who complained about it, complained about it not working on the iOS 13 BETA last year, and the iOS 12 BETA the year before. Guess what, their app worked on release day of those versions of iOS as well.

Just today one person who is a business customer has tweeted with them saying the app won’t work on his iOS 14 Beta phone, and now he’s locked out of his business account.

Running it on a 8+ since yesterday, it's very stable to me. None of my apps have been crashing and I've only noticed some minor graphical glitches here and there as well as some occasional sluggishness.

I still stand by my statement. I had minor issues that required a reboot, like for example the wallpaper wouldn’t change or the swiping movements did not work anymore, but otherwise it’s working fine.

Regarding battery it’s definitely using it more than iOS 13, but this is very normal for a beta anyway. It could also be simply because I’m using the phone more since upgrading. Hard to say. Anyway, not a big deal as it goes through the day still and if needed I have a fast charger.

Occasional frame rate slow down when scrolling in Safari, other than that - it’s been stable. Not had one crash yet.

I’m on my fourth day now on iPhone 7 and it’s been very solid. Surprised not to have the occasional crash. That could still change I guess. Only thing I've really noticed is some wackiness when typing on the keyboard. Lag, hesitation, etc.

Hi to all.
I am relatively new in Apple world, trying to research a lot about iOS, beta, etc
The reason why I am doing this is because I bought a second hand phone which has dev.beta 14.0 installed.
Everything works as it should, I believe, but I have 3 questions about that:

-is it possible to go back to 13 for someone that is not so technically experienced in iOS

-am I going to be able to install regular 14.0 after it is released even if I stick with this beta version until then (am I gonna be offered the official update)?

-the phone I bought is stil covered by Apple hardware support, would it be a good idea to go to Apple store and ask for their help?

Thanks in advance for all good people with useful information

cheers :)

You will need to put the phone in restore mode, plug it into your Mac, and restore to the latest iOS 13.6.1 release. Note you will lose any data stored on the device if you do this so backup first if you already have things on there you wish to keep.

Also if you don't have a Mac I think iTunes for Windows should do the same job. You will need a computer for the restore though.

Yes, you only have to delete the beta profile.

Thanks for the answer.
I can’t see the beta profile on the device but few tutorials say it’s under general-device management (something like that), and I don’t have it.
Maybe after I connect it with iTunes it will pop up somewhere.
Thanks again
