This has happened to me as well, although I did keep the Xx Max for the entire year but boy am I glad to have switched back to the smaller 11 Pro.
This time thing and getting used to it just never worked for me. I had the 8 plus and the Xs Max back to back so 2 years of plus size devices and still they were as unwieldy and they were the first day.
One handed usage is just not an option with these devices and if you’re in Europe where public transportation is still the main method of commuting during rush hour, the pain of that huge size is felt every day.
I’ve been really happy with the smaller 11 Pro since last year. But I’m also a huge iPhone photography enthusiast. So I’m eyeing the 12 Pro Max this year but not sure at all if I’m going to regret it.
Size vs camera. It’s a tough decision for me. I have a sneaky suspicion that camera will win in the end. Let’s see....
I don't get this.
The iPhone 12 mini has nearly the same screen size as the old 6s/7/8 Plus models

That's crazy to think. I almost want to get my hands on a Mini in person before deciding. I've had the larger versions since the 6S and I remember thinking that 6S Plus screen was massive when I unboxed it.
Having said that, I am going from a XS Max to a 12 Pro. I definitely don't regret having larger phones in the past but I do think I want something a bit more nimble in the future. I think I've reached my size limit with the XS Max.
true, here are the resolutionsAlthough the mini is 5.4", the aspect ratio is quite different to the traditional Plus phones so it's still a substantially smaller screen in practice.
