I went from 5s to 6S+ and originally enjoyed the bigger screen. I was always on the road work traveling at that time but then started having regrets when I got active hiking, running, wearing tight jeans all the time. I went and got the Original SE 2 years ago and fell in love all over again. I drop it in my shirt pocket, back tight jean pocket, side pocket. Most of all I dont want to be a screen zombie. I think if you are a non active person who plays games and watches movies all the time than the giant screen is your thing. If you actually have a life, the little phone has been wonderful. Its probably annoying trying to juggle the MAX phone when taking a photo. always using 2 hands. I'm more outdoor active now than ever before and I dont want this heavy brick in my little shorts pocket when I do calisthenics on the beach sand. Also when you run, its easy to grab the little phone in one hand to switch songs or peek at things. one hand pull out and drop in pocket or constant hold. I want the 12 pro but I think ill get the mini

I don't get this.

The iPhone 12 mini has nearly the same screen size as the old 6s/7/8 Plus models

5.4" @ 19.5:9 ratio is very different from 5.5" @ 16:9. Converted, the mini would only be a 4.7" display. You're losing a lot of horizontal real estate which makes it feel very cramped.

8 plus and 100 % yes , disappointing battery life , too big and unwieldy as a phone but not big enough to bother an iPad

Had smaller phones before and loved them , particularly the 5 and 6

If I get a new phone I’m going for top specs not max size

I had no problem with the 7 and 8 Plus, but the Max models are just too big. I know the overall device size is about the same, but with it being all display its that much harder to reach the top of the screen. And then throw in the ever increasing weight.

No regrets!

When they offered the 6+, I was content (still have that phone as an emergency phone). I'm currently using the XS max as my daily driver. I love the OLED and is great for video consumption. I never had a problem with its size, be it for my pockets or not being able to do stuff with one hand.

This year, I'm switching to the 12 pro. I was extremely jealous of last year's night mode camera and it's great that all the models are getting OLED (not really concerned about 5G because it's not really available). I only wish they offered a non 'pro' plus model.

Still...no regrets. Nothing beats having great screen real estate.

My 3 cents...

I switch with the iPhone 6 Plus (after using the 6 for a few months) and have never looked back. I just love the extra real estate and for my use case, the larger size is not cumbersome. And yes, I do run with the Max but I have a pouch for it. My eyes are also thankful for the larger screen lol.

Hey Everyone.

As I’m considering the iPhone 12 Pro & 12 Pro Max I’m wondering if anyone has gone for the phablet phones only to regret it? People I know seem to all be one or the other. They love and swear by their large phones or they hate them.

As someone who has contemplated the larger phones ever since the 6 Plus, I’ve never actually had one. Not by direct choice but my work has allowed me access to cheap phones and deals that where usually the smaller variety.

Let me know you experience?
I was always interested in a bigger screen and was pumped when they first offered the iPhone 6+. I didn’t think there could possibly be a phone too big for me, but once I got the 6+, I pretty much immediately regretted it.

The 6+ was great in my hands, but terrible in my pocket. I had to take it out of my pocket or bow my legs to the sides when walking up stairs because I couldn’t lift my knees high enough with the phone in my pocket. It was nearly impossible to get the phone out of my pocket when sitting too, so I always had to make sure I took it out of my pocket before I got in the car or sat down at my desk. It just wasn’t worth the hassle. Hiking I usually had to put the phone in my backpack which was a pain when I wanted to check my phone or take a picture. You just lose a lot of movement range with that beast in your pocket. (FWIW, I’m 6’2”)

I ended up switching to the iPhone 7, then X, then 11. I’ll be skipping the 12 for now due to headaches from OLED screens though, but if I did get one, I’d get the 6.1” 12 Pro.

I had the 8+ and the XS Max and loved them. However, this time I am going with the 12 Pro. I am a girl with girl pockets and there is no way I'd ever fit the 12 Pro Max in my pockets - the XS Max barely fit (I don't put phones in my back pockets). I don't carry a purse, so I'm at my limit.

I'm hoping I don't regret going down a size, but if I can't carry it in my jeans pocket, then it's going to just be too easy for me to lose. It'll also be nice saving a little cash this time, and while the extra camera features would be nice, I don't think it's enough to pay the extra premium this time for me.

11 Pro Max is the first "plus" size iPhone I've owned for more than a year. Love it, no regrets at all. This time I am going with a regular 12 Pro. The Max is unwieldly at times and is the largest I'd ever go. Can't imagine using the 12 Pro Max even though it is only slightly larger.

I have a XS max which I love but think I'm going with the smaller 12 Pro as well this time around. Something just slightly smaller will be nice.

Yes, display width matters a lot more than height. Dividing horizontal resolution by pixels per inch, we see
12: 2.54"
8 Plus: 2.69"
12 mini: 2.27"
SE gen 2: 2.30"
SE gen 1: 1.96"

I'm surprised (possibly delighted) the 12 mini and the 4.7" phones have such similar widths. I thought it would be closer to the first gen SE.

I have an 11 Pro Max and I'm considering stepping down in size to the 12 Pro. That being said, I'm torn because of the camera, as well as not wanting to lose the screen size for watching videos...

Does anybody know of an image I can view on my 11 Pro Max to show me the size of the 12 Pro on my screen, for comparison? I recall something like this in the past.

I’ve always preferred larger phones, I find the small ones difficult to text on.

Thoroughly enjoyed my Xs Max and absolutely loving my 11 Pro Max, cannot see myself returning to small phones, not since my Galaxy Note 4.

I bought an XS Max, and took it back within a week and swapped it for a standard size XS.

Loved the huge screen when actually using it, but carrying it about was a nuisance. Not only the physical size, but the weight as well.

I'm definately upgrading from my XS to the 12 Pro/12 Pro Max this year, and have been struggling with notions of trying the Max size again. I've pretty much talked myself out of the idea now though, and reckon the bump up in size from my XS's 5.8" to the 12 Pro's 6.1" should be a nice middle ground.

The 12 Pro will be the same screen size as my wife's current 11, and I know when holding that, it does certainly feel like a nice amount larger than my XS.

I have a big phone that's older and a small phone that's much newer and much faster.

I never use the newer smaller faster iPhone for general use because I don't like looking at its little screen

I'm a tiny person with tiny hands, and I've always had a Plus/Max phone, and never once regretted it. It does take a week or two to get used to the larger size, but after that, it doesn't feel "big", it just feels like a totally normal phone to me. With that being said, my hands are so small that I really can't use any phone comfortably one-handed, so it's not a difference between being able to use it one-handed or not, as it is for some people.

Yeah if the XS Max was too much for you, you will hate the 12 Pro Max lol, the 11 Pro Max was very slightly taller, thicker and wider than the XS Max, while also being significantly heavier , however the 12 Pro is much larger than both XS Max and 11 Pro Max, as well as heavier, if you didn’t like the Xs Max the 12 Pro Max is definitely not for you going by this

Still own a iPhone 11 Pro that 5.8 inch is anazing size for my jeans and pants but looking very small in today's standards compared to galaxy note going max this time around saving me money from purchasing a iPad Air 4....

You cannot beat big screens for media content and pictures.

I bought the 6 plus when it came out in 2014 and hated how large it was. I returned it for the regular sized model and haven't looked back. A few family members have the 11 Pro Max and I'm still not a fan. I prefer the (relative) portability of the standard phone over the extra screen real estate.

First world problem. To be precise, Pro users problem
If you have a missus or GF, get max for them so it is sorted.

Hahaha she hates big phones. Her first iPhone was the 4 and every time she gets a new one she complains so I won’t be surprised if she chooses the mini.

I’ve had a plus sized iPhone since 2016. I thoroughly enjoyed the Plus size until this year.

I will be downsizing to the 6.1 inch Pro to get better one handed use and better pocket-ability. One handed use has become very important to me now that I have a newborn that likes sleeping in my arms.

That is a good example I hadn’t thought of. I don’t have kids but probably could in the next 5 years.

I find myself going back and forth repeatedly... from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5 (++) to iPhone 4s (--) to iPhone 6 Plus (++) to iPhone X (--) to iPhone XS Max (++). Sounds crazy I know, but there are good reasons for my crazy smartphone size rollercoaster ride.

I went from the iPhone 5 to the 4s because I did not like the 5's size and preferred the smaller form factor of the 3GS since that was still usable one-handed whereas the iPhone 5 was not, at least not comfortably.

I then went form the iPhone 4s to the iPhone 6+ because I quit my job and travelled the world extensively for a year during which the 6+ was my only communication device, my only camera, my only computer, etc. The extra screen real estate was hugely beneficial during my travels, and I did not mind its extra size and weight because I wore a pair of travel cargo pants most of the time for practical reasons and thus had cargo pockets to jam it into rather than having to deal with it in my front pockets.

Once my wife and I settled in the US I started loathing its size again (mind you: the size of the case, not the size of the display), and went for the smaller iPhone X with a similarly sized display.

After three years I realized three things:
a) once you cross a certain size threshold it doesn't matter anymore because you won't be using it one-handed anyway, and it won't fit in your pants' front pockets comfortably either
b) unlike five or even ten years ago we use our smartphones for much more these days, and the added screen real estate can be a game changer
c) I rarely ever hold my phone to my ear when talking but use headsets instead, so it spends most of the time on a table or other flat surface

There was thus no legitimate reason for me to value a smaller screen device over a larger one, so when I found a great deal on an iPhone XS Max recently thanks to @BlueMoose I didn't hesitate and once again went back to the larger screen device with the better camera. Yes, it's clunky. Yes, it's too large to be used comfortably while walking down the street. But for me, the benefits of the larger screen have started to outweigh its downsides.

My wife is in the same boat by the way. After fighting large-screen phones for many years (iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 6 -> iPhone 8) she finally caved and asked me to get her an XS Max as well, and she's loving it. She misses the days of easy one-handed use and the ability to carry it around in her pants' front pockets but has simply started putting it in her back pockets instead. I wonder how long it'll take for her to sit down on it and break it 🤔
