I find myself going back and forth repeatedly... from iPhone 3GS to iPhone 5 (++) to iPhone 4s (--) to iPhone 6 Plus (++) to iPhone X (--) to iPhone XS Max (++). Sounds crazy I know, but there are good reasons for my crazy smartphone size rollercoaster ride.

I went from the iPhone 5 to the 4s because I did not like the 5's size and preferred the smaller form factor of the 3GS since that was still usable one-handed whereas the iPhone 5 was not, at least not comfortably.

I then went form the iPhone 4s to the iPhone 6+ because I quit my job and travelled the world extensively for a year during which the 6+ was my only communication device, my only camera, my only computer, etc. The extra screen real estate was hugely beneficial during my travels, and I did not mind its extra size and weight because I wore a pair of travel cargo pants most of the time for practical reasons and thus had cargo pockets to jam it into rather than having to deal with it in my front pockets.

Once my wife and I settled in the US I started loathing its size again (mind you: the size of the case, not the size of the display), and went for the smaller iPhone X with a similarly sized display.

After three years I realized three things:
a) once you cross a certain size threshold it doesn't matter anymore because you won't be using it one-handed anyway, and it won't fit in your pants' front pockets comfortably either
b) unlike five or even ten years ago we use our smartphones for much more these days, and the added screen real estate can be a game changer
c) I rarely ever hold my phone to my ear when talking but use headsets instead, so it spends most of the time on a table or other flat surface

There was thus no legitimate reason for me to value a smaller screen device over a larger one, so when I found a great deal on an iPhone XS Max recently thanks to @BlueMoose I didn't hesitate and once again went back to the larger screen device with the better camera. Yes, it's clunky. Yes, it's too large to be used comfortably while walking down the street. But for me, the benefits of the larger screen have started to outweigh its downsides.

My wife is in the same boat by the way. After fighting large-screen phones for many years (iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 6 -> iPhone 8) she finally caved and asked me to get her an XS Max as well, and she's loving it. She misses the days of easy one-handed use and the ability to carry it around in her pants' front pockets but has simply started putting it in her back pockets instead. I wonder how long it'll take for her to sit down on it and break it 🤔

I put my phone in my back pocket but most often pull it out before I sit down anyway.

I’ve noticed I can’t type well on the X for some reason and I want the wider screen becuase I hate one handed typing.

The portability could have matter when I was catching public transport to work but I work from home now so I don’t go anywhere much anymore haha.

The entire footprint and heft of the device is what bothers me about big phones, not necessarily the screen size.
I wouldn’t want to go bigger than the footprint of my 11 pro. The Pro Mac was unwieldy, as was the XR.

It’s really personal preference, test out some different sizes if you’re able, or order both sizes and return the one you don’t end up liking.

Once my wife and I settled in the US I started loathing its size again

all of my friends and/or co-workers who moved to the US started loathing their body sizes after a few years... (sad but true) Every single one of them gained at least 10 to 20 pounds after moving to the US. I also loath myself for my large size. :(

Time to start eating more apples and quit apple pies. :)

Back to the iPhones... I placed a pre-order for the iPhone 12 Pro yesterday. Pick up is next Friday.

I am still very much enjoying the $447 new Simple Mobile iPhone XS Max that I bought from Amazon... After I play both phones together for a while, one of them will be going to a family member. :)

Hey Everyone.

As I’m considering the iPhone 12 Pro & 12 Pro Max I’m wondering if anyone has gone for the phablet phones only to regret it? People I know seem to all be one or the other. They love and swear by their large phones or they hate them.

As someone who has contemplated the larger phones ever since the 6 Plus, I’ve never actually had one. Not by direct choice but my work has allowed me access to cheap phones and deals that where usually the smaller variety.

Let me know you experience?

My 7+ was too large for the pocket I carried the phone in. First time I upgraded in just over a year (to the X). I tried belt clips, but too easily broken getting out of car if it caught.

I was upgrading from a 6, and since the 7 didn't look any different, I got the + to make a bigger change.

I've kept it as a backup phone since then where I don't carry every day. I'll offer it to my brother in law for Christmas if he wants to upgrade from that old 6 of mine that he has used for 4 years.

This is the decision I'm struggling with right now: Do I go for the Pro Max because of the photo/video advantages, or do I go with the smaller form factor of the Pro? No doubt, the Pro Max has lots more going for it. Problem is we don't actually know how much better the Pro Max is than the Pro since we're still in pre-release. Tough decision.

I think the advantages are relatively minor. Better stabilization, and a slightly enhanced optical zoom.

I’ve tried to love both the 6s plus and the 8 plus and ended up returning them both. I could not get past the size and weight of these phones. The screen was good but in my everyday life they were just too large. I just prefer a more pocket friendly phone personally.

I have had the XS Max since it came out and I plan to get a non max phone next time I upgrade. It is too big for me to use with one hand which sometimes I need to do.

I will say - I am kind of annoyed that they are giving the max better specs than the regular pro version.

I am still using my 6s plus. It’s the one model that I have used the longest of any iPhone I’ve had. It was a tough decision going with the bigger phone at the time but I don’t regret it at all. I never had a problem with it fitting in my pockets or it being uncomfortable. The larger screen makes it much easier to read things and stream as well. I don’t think will go back to a smaller phone anymore.

Well, I wouldn’t say I am regret of getting 6 Plus. Based on my experience, I could watch VDO and play games in the bigger screen size but I don't like carrying it around (although I can put it in my Jeans’ s pocket). I think it is too big to carry. When I need to tie my shoes on the street (with iPhone 6Plus in my pocket) I usually wish I could have a smaller phone.

Now, I am having iPhone X. I feel it is the right size. If I will get another iPhone, I will definitely get the similar size.

My opinion on the big phones is that they would be great if Apple actually put effort into creating a big phone experience.

I always went with the largest phones but I think I’m done with them. I love the big screen but my problem is that Apple doesnt offer things that would take advantage of the size. Multitasking. More apps. Pencil support. Interface enhancements. Big screens are great but (for me) I’ve been feeling that if the experience is just “a big phone” then maybe I’d be better off just using my iPad.

Very well said. PiP is the only feature of recent note that is best executed on the larger phone displays.

I got the XS max and it was my least favorite phone. Very heavy and hard to use one handed. I prefer the mid size phones because they have the best combination of pocket-ability and battery life. My 12 Pro lasts all day most days - the battery is a beast.
“My 12 pro............” typo?

Agreed, give it the iPad treatment with the software and the trade off would be worth it for me. I am downsizing from an 11PM this year.

I think it depends on what kind of other devices you have. Me personally, Im pretty deep in the ecosystem - I have an iPhone, iPad, Macbook, appletv, etc. So, for me, I don’t need my phone to be a really great media player. I value the pocket ability and portability of a smaller phone. To be honest, if Apple had an iPhone 12 Pro Mini I would be getting that, but alas.

however, if your only iDevice is your phone, the I completely understand why some folks gravitate to the Max models.

Some days I do. Some days I don't. Might get the 6.1" size next time just to switch things up. If Apple gave the Max more features to utilize the screen real estate I would probably never go back, but they're essentially the same phone.

I have the best of both worlds keeping my iPhone 11 Pro from last year and getting the new iPhone 12 Pro Max this year the reason saving me couple hundred bucks from getting the iPad air 4.

I miss the big screen factor for streaming movies and Web surfing 5.8 inches doesn't really cut it anymore for me looks so small.

I've had a 6s+ since 2014 and love having a big phone. I'm not a one-handed user; whenever I use my phone, I have two hands on it, so the larger size isn't an issue. I also like having a larger screen. Finally, I don't usually put my phone in my pants or jacket pocket; it's in whatever bag I'm carrying.

Im in the ecosystem as well. Currently have a iPhone X, iPad 2017, MacBook Pro 2011 & iMac.

iPhone Pro Mini would be amazing. I ruled out the mini however for not being much of an update to my X. I don’t need the bigger screen so much it’s more I want the better phone to last another 3-5 years and to have the best camera.

I wouldn’t say I regret buying my 11 Pro, but the only downfall was I wish I did more research on it as I did not realize it was a brick Compared to the X. The X was a joy to use weight wise, so I’m getting the 12 and can’t wait for a light phone again.
