Did you upgrade form your s9+.

Op, not considering a note9.

Really happy with with the iPhone Xs max.

Still have the S9+, I usually have an iDevice and Droid but only use one at a time and swap as the mood takes me. On the iPhone side I guess I am upgrading from an X. Only reason I got the max was the larger screen, would not have considered the Xs.

I have the feeling the max will be a slow burner for me, fully intending on going iOS only for a while.

I'm lucky I can afford these things but I do resent what apple are doing with the pricing so would kind of like these to not sell that well. Not going to happen!

Potentially, but didn't Samsung scale back because they made too many/lower than expected sales?

That is correct. it hits them twice as hard because they are also the component manufacturer for many of the components that go into a smartphone. And by not selling and lowering projected units due to a lack of demand, they would need to find another buyer, but this late into the year, it’s usually a Chinese company purchasing at a discount. It is what it is.

They scaled back manufacturing of smartphones but not OLED display, as far as I’m aware.

Samsung display is a separate company to Samsung mobile.

The iPhone Xs, not a total disappointment, but I really hope they introduced some more features other than the just basically some tweaks and adding an eSIM. I almost bought an Xs Max in China, only did I realize that the Chinese model even though have the real dual-SIM solution has FaceTime Audio disabled (there is no way to enable it) and I use FaceTime Audio almost exclusively to contact many of my family when they are abroad.

In terms of features, I really wish Apple put in some sort of in-screen fingerprint reader. Sometimes I'm wearing shades that hide my eyes, it's annoying to use FaceID. I guess Apple did double-down on their FaceID and that's what we should expect in the future, but being a $1000-$1500 phone this is a bit disappointing.

I smashed my iPhone X, so recently I've been using a Huawei Mate RS, which is not exactly perfect has just about everything but the kitchen sink. In-screen and back fingerprint reader, face unlock, dual SIM, OLED display, 4000 mAH battery, it's really fast and well featured, makes me wonder if Apple has become a bit stagnant. I do have to say iOS has really become something, but the hardware seems a bit behind.

That all said I did buy the iPhone Xs, was suppose to be delivered on Friday, but UPS says it did not get loaded on the plane or something due to customs…

How much did you get the mate ta for?

Waiting until late 2019, iOS 12 is nice on my 7+ and the antenna reception issues, and price of the new phones makes them a pass for me now.

So 7+ for another year. :)

I really regretted not getting the 7+ for the dual camera (I got the regular 7 instead). Nothing has enticed me to upgrade except for the portrait functionality. Technically I could live with the 7+ for really long until triple camera comes out:p, all the new phones are still outfitted with dual cameras and I'm not exactly a fan of Face ID.

LOL. The Note 9? You think the iPhones are disappointing yet you mention the Note 9, which is just an enlarged S9+ with a yellow stylus? :D

Samsung is boring. Pixel is boring. What's not boring is Poco F1, same SD845 as Note9 and future Pixel 3 for $300. Now that's worth a mention.

Apple, on the other hand, stands on its own since they make their own chips and OS. I'm quite pleased with Apple using more colors for the XR (although they don't seem to point it out too much, I miss Jobs' nanochromatic marketing campaign). The only disappointing thing is the promise of dual SIM that ended up being an eSIM BS and having to get a China/HK version for real dual SIM. Might as well not announcing it altogether as it misled a lot of people.
The S pen is what makes the note for a lot of people and the new S-pen does a lot more. The poco has the same chip as the note 9 and the upcoming pixel 3 but that’s about it. It doesn’t have the same hardware or features.

I’ve just returned my second defective XS iPhone this weekend.

Both exhibited total lockup and would not respond for 3 minutes then go black for 4 minutes then auto reboot.

Both were 256GB Gold XS phones.

The first one I had restored from a backup of my iPhone 6S - it also had problems with FaceTime, the first FaceTime call would not connect - cancelled the call but it kept on making the ringing for 40 minutes even after killing every running app, it locked up the phone and only stopped ringing after I figured out how to do the hard reboot.

The second one was setup as a new install - within 10 minutes of first power up locked up whenI selected Podcasts app.

I video taped this lockup sequence - identical to the one purchased Friday. A boring video - but shows what it was doing for 7 minutes, or not as was the actual case.

Just got a refund and have sent the Apple iPhone case back to Apple for a refund.

It looks like quality control failed miserably here.

My Apple Watch gen 0 battery is failing so maybe this is Apple’s way of telling me to get an Pixel 3?

Disappointing and annoying to have spent so many hours getting these things working/diagnosing with Apple and syncing and re-syncing the Apple Watch between the two XS and the original iPhone 6S Plus.

Don’t know if it is the iPhone or iOS 12 but not overly keen on spending £1149 on a device that locks up twice a day from day one.

Maybe it’s the Watch causing the issues? Sounds like that could be a common denominator.

Regardless of how this is resolved. Dont restore from a 6S backup. Thats just asking for trouble.

I wouldn’t switch to another platform because of some bugs. A small proportion of phones from any manufacturer will have issues.

Could be but doubt it - it is and has been working great with my iPhone 6s+ for many years.

If the XS is incompatible with the Apple Watch even before pairing it then it has deeper problems.

The second iPhone XS had its first lockup 10 mins after first power up, set up as a new phone, manually setup.

Just logged in on iCloud , press Podcasts then a 7 minute wait while the iPhone recovers.

So I doubt it could be the Watch.

The 2nd XS was never plugged into anything, so not an iTunes issue.

This was a vanilla straight out of the box -with just a login into iCloud.

So it may have issues with iCloud - but if it does that would be a fairly common issue.

I suspect a bad batch.

No I won’t, I’ll do a manual new build and re-add the 80 odd apps back in one by one.

Upgraded from the X to the XS Max and it is just not worth it. The XS max is going back on Monday..... The screen size was amazing, but not worth the $1100 price tag compared to my current X. Guess I'll see what they release next year.

I guess I’m just thinking that if a restore is not a safe practice and I have to restore everything manually then maybe this is an opportunity and bite the bullet and move to the Pixel 3?

My gen 0 Apple Watch is near end of life, I am loathed to get a gen 4 as that locks me into Apple iPhone for another 3 years.

After two dud iPhone XS is a Google Pixel 3 going to be as bad?

I’ve had a new iPhone every 2 years for ten years, except the last one because I saw no compelling reason to go for an 8/8+ or X.

My iPhone 6S + is three years old now. Apple very nicely renewed the battery for £25 and then had to replace screen, front camera and home button after they broke the camera putting in the new batter.

Maybe I just sit tight with my largely new 6S+ and wait until next year and see if they are any more reliable.

Or take the Pixel plunge?

But largely very disappointed in Apple selling me two duff phones, it isn’t what I expected from them.

Nope

Straight out the box - manual setup as a new phone.

10 minutes from first power up - I had logged into iCloud .

Pressed Podcasts and it is locked up for 7 minutes - 3 with the screen on 4 with the screen off.

As vanilla as it can be - didn’t even get enough time to put the SIM card in.

The 1st one that did this had exactly the same issues - kept just locking up at about 2 every day.

Spent hours on phone with Apple Support - after restoring to factory and it still did it

Apple told me to return it and get another one, the 2nd one did it within 10 minutes of first power up.

Strange, I had an issue with a gold iPhone X’s max, it was exhibiting, pink shift at the top of the screen.

Rotten luck.
Enjoy whatever device you land on.

Hmm, I have zero issues with my Xs Max 256gb.

Actually, I am extremely impressed with it compared to my Note 9. I thought the Note 9 was awesome, this phone has honestly changed my mind about Apple. The big screen really makes a difference from the X to the Max I had. And how fast the unlocking is with face id was one of my major complaints last time. Now I barely notice it.

So with my Note 9, I would only make it to around 30% by the end of the day. The Max I was at 70%!!!! The battery just out lasts the Note 9 by a large margin and I am really surprised since its a smaller battery, but the O/S is optimized so well.

Plus since all my family has iPhones except me, It made it easier to switch back and now we all can use imessage again.

And that is exactly how it should be!

My experience with 5 previous iPhones too, which is why it was all the more surprising that I had two duff units in 48 hours.

Clearly you being impressed isn't important enough since you are still going to buy one! LOL
My being unimpressed is the reason why I'm willing to wait in Oct to make the purchase in Portland, Or.. Had it excited me, I would have purchased the Gold 512GB available in store last night. Even from someone like me upgrading from a 5S, wasn't all that wowed by the XS/XS Max.

I always consider the first 4 months to be a final public beta for any new changed hardware. Production and chipset changes happen. OS gets to meet the first real units, usually that hits sweet spot in March following year.

The Max sounds wonderful, give it 6 months. Use a Note 9 in the meantime, worth every penny. Oreo 8.1 is solid after a year and 9.1 Pie should be out in the fall.

Perfect Storms: your new phone even based on the X, and new iOS.
Even the Note 7/8 were test runs perfected in the 9.

PS: yesterday my router or modem decided to not connect to internet on two different makes phone but did on two iOS units. Very odd, still not sure why. Love having every platform represented.
There was a firmware update from Netgear that could block access to iTunes and Apple update services if one feature was enabled that took a month to resolve. Software bugs.

If you’re interested in Android and decide you like what you see when Google holds its version of a keynote in a couple of weeks, by all means get a Pixel 3.

But do not think you’re escaping a lottery ordering from them. My first Pixel 2 was defective. Most of my friends on the Pixel portion of this forum endured at least one quality control related return and many endured MULTIPLE returns. My husband sent his back and never tried another one.

YouTube reviewers MKBHD stopped using his Pixel 2 XL because it slowed down so badly. My second Pixel 2 is fine but I’m not really using it for much more than the camera right now and I refuse to update it to Android Pie.

For my part, though I love Android and am excited to see what Google does this year, I’ve got a nice 2 year warranty on my Pixel 2 (extended by Google to make up for their horrendous qc issues last year) so I’m sitting this release out until I see if they’ve finally got their stuff together. Looking at the leaked overall design of the Pixel 3 XL, uh...I’m not so sure about that. I’m going to try hard and reserve judgment.

My silver 64gb XS Max locked up while trying to sign up for an account on a newly installed app. I had no choice but to hard reset. Later the same day, I had it charging on a Spigen wireless charging stand and tried to wake up the screen by tapping on it. It didn't respond, so I pressed the side button and still nothing. Since the screen was black, I had to hold the power button for quite a while before it lit up, and then it didn't even act like it had been rebooted - just went right to the lock screen. I will admit it's making me a bit nervous and I wonder if I should take it in for diagnostics or just return it and get another one within the 14 days?

My theory was if it is crashing now, how annoying will it get when you don’t have the option to return it?
