Display issues with M1 Mini

Anyone else having display issues with their M1 Mini? I'm hooked up via HDMI (tried 3 cables and 3 monitors) and having the same issues on each. Static screen when waking from sleep is common, and static/green screen on boot randomly. Re-plugging the HDMI cable fixes it, as does waiting anywhere from 30 sec-5 minutes.

I also get random pink dots and squares on all the monitors I've tried. I don't have a USB-C to DP adapter to test, but this is pretty discouraging results already for a brand new Mini.

I’d probably request a replacement since it’s unlikely to be the three cables and monitors you verified. My mini is connected vial hdmi without issue.

Just experienced the same issue with the pink squares on my M1 Mac mini. Turned it on and got pink squares on my monitor. Changed the wallpaper and the squares disappeared, it's been about an hour and still nothing.

Running dual displays on my base M1 Mini:

USB-C to TB2 Apple adapter + 0.5m Apple Thunderbolt cable to 27" Apple Thunderbolt display + HDMI direct to 27" Asus display.

No issues from wake or sleep...

I do wish there was a 3rd party vendor that would make a USB-C to pre Retina iMac because I have 2 and would love identical displays next to each other...

Just experienced the same issue with the pink squares on my M1 Mac mini. Turned it on and got pink squares on my monitor. Changed the wallpaper and the squares disappeared, it's been about an hour and still nothing.

When my M1 mini boots I do get a green screen for a second and then it resumes with the Apple logo and log in screen as normal. I had similar issues with my old Mac mini (2018) when using HDMI and all kinds of nightmare problems with eGPU, but never had any problems beyond that.

I actually lost my display altogether at 144hz, I'm going to try safe mode tonight and delete the display settings preference file.

Hope it works! I was wondering why the default refresh rate was 60hz on my monitor. I have to use scaled to get higher Hz even though my monitor can go up to 240Hz. Is that normal?

Mine defaulted to 60hz too, I think 120hz worked if I remember correctly and 144hz killed it. I have it on a 120hz 4k LG Nanocell 90 right now and it seems to be working ok, but I can't use this as a daily display. I'll provide an update if this resolves the issue, fingers crossed.

All 3 of my monitors are above 60hz, ranging from 75-165Hz. It *may* have something to do with it but just a theory at this point. My new mini is coming on Wednesday and I've ordered some USB C to DP/HDMI cable to do more trobleshooting should the need arise.

Thanks for keeping us posted. I swapped the HDMI cable just because, and haven't noticed any problems since. But then again I didn't experience anything like that for the past 4 days. Hoping it's not hardware related.

Just restarted my Mac, and the pink squares came back. I'm going have to replace it.

Nah, I think it’s some sort of design flaw with minis (not sure if they’re using similar internals beyond CPU) or a bug with the monitor I use. I had the issue from day one on my last gen Intel Mac Mini too. So long as it doesn’t happen any other time besides at boot I’m not really worried about it.

static green screen. maybe because big surr. my kaboom imac 2017 had this issue.. sleep wakeup green screen i have to restart it.

I will. Tomorrow I’ll run 60Hz the whole day and see. Unfortunately I only have HDMI available at the moment.

So far no pink squares on 60hz. But I think it's important to remember that I was using it at 120Hz for a few days without issues either. I also ran the apple hardware test and got the Code ADP000 which means no hardware issue was found. Does that mean that Big Sur is having issues running at 120Hz on M1? I'll keep using it on 60Hz until tomorrow evening and come back to you guys.

I get this problem every time my M1 mini wakes from sleep, restarts, or exits sidecar. I'm using a USB-C to HDMI and an HDMI cable. Both displays are 1080p at 60hz. I've found that just turning one of the monitors off/on will fix the issue.

Very interesting. I'm starting to wonder if it's just some sort of optimization issue with Big Sur and M1 which could be fixed through updates, as opposed to being hardware related.

I read on the Apple community discussions that the cables should be less than 1 meter each and that should fix it, but I haven't tried that yet. I also don't see why the length of the cable should matter.

Yeah that definitely does not make a lot of sense. Doesn't seem very convenient either.
