have the same issue with the pink squares on login screen and after login for a while. It started today after 3 weeks of ownership. Dont know if it is coincidence or not, but started after connecting for the first time a brand new magic keyboard and a magic mouse 2. Also have the problem with not waking up from sleep from day 1. Have to force a restart everytime. Any suggestions?
I only have the pink squares when using HDMI, doesn't happen when using Display Port cable from the Thunderbolt USB-C (Cable Matters Display Port cable to USB-C).

I'm also using a Magic Keyboard (A1843) and Magic Mouse 2 (A1657). I use sleep function about 5 times a day and only had the wake from sleep problem once. Updated to Big Sur 11.1 upon first turning on the Mac. Had the Mac mini for 2 weeks now.

thanks for your reply. unfortunatelly I have only an HDMI TV that I am using for the mini but the strange thing is that it happened after 3 weeks of use with no issues..

Definitely strange that it's only started happening.

May be worth trying a new high quality HDMI cable. One that has a good return policy in case it doesn't work.

I will try with a cable first... but as I read there are many people with exact the same problem so it must be bigger than just an isolated one. Maybe a software issue. The good think is that it disappears after some minutes of use.

oh my god this fixed my wake issue which was the wrong scaling. OH MY GOD THANK YOU. FINALLY. you are amazing
update: it was only after immediate display sleep. after a few hours or longer gaps I still have this issue. this is the most annoying problem ever. either I have to put the computer to sleep and then wait like 15 seconds for HDMI display to turn on, or deal with going into settings to fix the resolution or turn the monitor off and on again.

Still here.
I picked up a second display that uses DisplayPort. Since I began using this and my original HDMI display together, I've not experience the issue and it's been over a week. *shrug*

The 1st generation M1 based Mini most certainly has graphics "quirks".

For me, the quick version is some monitors work, some don't. It's most likely going to be a software fix though. I've been lucky that over HDMI I've tried 2 monitors, one 1920x1080 and one 3440x1440 and both worked flawlessly.

Over USB-C I've had a USB-C to DisplayPort 1920x1080 monitor work fine. A older 1280x1024 USB-C to DVI monitor from LG not work (green static everywhere). Then (using the same cable) tried another older HP DVI 1280x1024 and it worked fine. Swapping the cable back to the LG, it was back to green static. Move that LG (again, same cable) over to test it on a 2017 iMac and a 2015 13" MacBook Pro, and it works fine on both of those. Back to the new Mac mini, green static. Old Dell 24" 1920x1200 DVI monitor works fine also using that same USB-C to DVI cable on the mini. So I gave up on using the LG as a second monitor and just used the older HP instead.

Current setup, No-name HDMI 1080p primary monitor, old HP 1280x1024 as USB-C to DVI secondary monitor, working fine, no graphic glitches on screen, but waking from sleep takes about 30 seconds for the displays to settle in sometimes. They power/sleep/power a few times before finally turning on for good. Once they do everything is fine.

/edit. In case someone is searching online to figure out why their LG display won't work properly with the M1 mini, the monitor I was having issues with was a LG Flatron L1920P. We have a few laying around here and none worked on the M1 Mini using DVI. Didn't try VGA. It's a super old (like 16 years) monitor, so probably won't be a issue for most. But I can say with certainty that as of Jan 15th, 2021, this display is not compatible with the M1 mini. (Might work later on with a software update, who knows)

As far as I'm concerned, definitely a problem with the combination of M1 and BS when there is more than one monitor.

Had one monitor (an Eizo) attached to my M1 Mini via HDMI for over a month. No issues at all. Not ever. Never
  • Could power it off, leave it for hours, came back straight away
  • Let it activate it's own power saving after the Mini display sleep kicked in, cam back no issues
  • And so on...
Yesterday, after many trials, finally got a second monitor to work, this is via a Caldigit SOHO that is converting the USBC to HDMI.

In the last day I've had the original Eizo monitor, same cable, same port
  • Start flashing it comes back to life after its left unused for more than somewhere around 30 minutes
  • While I am using it as the primary screen, go black for seconds, go into power save then come back

My experience has been that upon initially connecting the mini with my Acer Predator 32” Gsync via hdmi cable, the mini would not wake from sleep,my webcam attached to the usb hub on my monitor blinks indicating signal going from mini to monitor but screen stays black until I turn the monitor off and back on. I found that using an Apple adapter from usb c to hdmi solved the problem but that left my hdmi port unusable for primary display.

There are problems with the M1 depending on the monitor used.

My Dell 27” HDMI fails to wake-up about half the time. The second monitor is a Dell 27” USB-C and it wakes up. I have to reboot to get the first monitor to wake up.

I have that issue when waking my M1 Mac mini. Hash screen that moves. Usually requires a hard reset. They have supposedly replace my motherboard but I'm still having the issue. Apple says I have to have it fail 3 times before they will replace it.

I love my M1 Mac but the support policy sucks.

I have this issue with hdmi connected monitors when wake up after sleep/restart on any Mac (MacBook Pro 13 2015/ Mac mini 2018/ MacBook Pro 16” via dongle) since Catalina. Even during work HDMI connection may stop working for a second on my Mac mini 2018. It is really annoying. So stopped use hdmi connection on macs and this is why I didn’t consider Mac mini M1 because for me it’s specs means 1 monitor support only (via thunderbolt->DP). All my monitors I connect via Thunderbolt 3 or DP.
I surprised why it is so difficult to Apple to fix this issue with HDMI as it is here years already :)

Now the "HDMI-Monotor blackout" is not only using the M1 MacMini but also using the i9 Macbook pro 2018 - so it must be a software related problem.
Btw. the expensive Apple Pro Display XDR works on both systems without any problem.
But I like a 2-Monitor setup.
