All due respect, given that you could have used a simple setting to make iCloud verifiably private, but you don't "trust" iCloud

Why would I put my company data on someelse's servers (i.e. "the Cloud")?

Explain to me how you think "the Cloud" is more private or secure than local hard-drives that I own and control?

or you don't "trust" Apple Intelligence, even though the safety measures are clearly published and verified,

Right. Corporate America would never do anything bad with my information, and Corporate America would *never* have a data breach, get hacked, and somehow mishandle my data.

Would never happen in a million years!!!

I get it now!!

I think you don't understand the risks.

You imply there are no risks with Apple.

You imply there are no risks with AI.

You fear risks, and choose to ask a random Internet forum for advice because you don't trust big corporations. That's not understanding the risks.

So explain to me how to "understand the risks"...

In all honesty, Apple is the least likely company to do this. If it were to mishandle data, it'd be catastrophic for them as they've based their entire image on privacy. That may be naïve, but I honestly can't see them doing anything to jeopardise their image - seeing as how badly people kick off about the placement of a power button...

If that's not enough for you, disable the features. If that's still not enough you may need to look elsewhere?

Fair assessment.

Which is all I was really asking about in my OP. (But am flattered that once again I have started a long heated debate - it's good to have these kinds of conversations!)

I'm married to the Apple ecosystem. But it is no crime to ask questions and always remain skeptical... ;-)

From what I understand, at least one of the reasons Siri sucks so much compared to other assistants is because Apple doesn't scrape all of your data and use it to train the model. They are pretty straightforward with how they use your data if you care to read through all their documentation.

Apple has already been caught using your voice to train Siri. There are a lot of ways for them to use your data and claim it doesn’t fall under their AI claim.
Been caught?
And that’s why they started asking for permission or what?
It’s been in Apples Terms and Conditions that they might use anonymized data, aka recordings, to improve Siri’s accuracy at listing, no?

Yes, both Apple and your carrier/ISP are spying on you. That has nothing to do with AI. They have been doing that for years.

Also, I think that unmarked van parked outside is Homeland Security.

I will put that on my To-Do list!

Because AI has the ability to steal my *copyrighted* material and then use it to create derivative works and profit off of *MY* work...

AI also is light years ahead of former "spying" and has the ability to build a detailed profile on each of us...
🤷🏻‍♂️ welcome to the future. I’d worry more about Google and Meta.

You are correct about all of that.

But my concern is Apple using AI to scrap all of my data off my phone and use it for "learning" or flat out STEALING my content.

I don't claim to be an expert on AI, but I do know that a lot of companies are stealing artists work for their profit. (And while Adobe denies this, I don't believe them!)

When I go to settings, I don't see "Apple Intelligence"...
Ambrosia7177,

For more Fun Facts about Adobe, back in the day when Flash ruled everything there used to be a fun folder buried 5 Folders in your System Prefs called "LocalSharedObjects" which was installed whenever you installed Flash on your Mac. LocalSharedObjects would keep track of your Web Browsing and make a list....That List would phone Home! It would also write an identical list to a different location on your Drive! Used to be a neat Coffee Shop trick to show some Rando with a MacBook click into that Folder and watch there Face as a Text List of all the sites they had visited started to appear...
There was a way to disable it, but you had to be aware of it in the first place.

The cloud is less likely to fail than a local hard drive. More data leaks happen from company servers/drives than do from large cloud hacks.

This is not an argument. We're not talking about corporate America at large. Data breeches don't matter if the corporation in question doesn't have the keys to decrypt your data.

So explain to me how to "understand the risks"...
Reading this and published white papers and taking the time to understand the underlying architecture instead of asking macrumors.com forum would be a great start.

This user needs to cancel Apple News, I think it’s rotting their brain 😭
Also at least 10 solutions have been provided and none of them seem to satisfy them.
Plus the End of Democracy talk leads me to believe this user is just emotionally led this week…
How could someone find this site, create an account etc, but not know the iPhone 11 doesn’t have the AI capabilities? This isn’t a mainstream site like Reddit or whatever, very odd

Good reminder, and if so, that sort of proves my point with being paranoid about Apple AI...

Uh oh, poor Ambrosia7177, I think the Apple AI just made off with the image of the three apples from your avatar. Another loss like that and your company will have to file for bankruptcy!!

Seriously though, you really are paranoid given that Apple puts in writing:
"Designed to protect users’ privacy at every step, Apple Intelligence uses on-device processing, meaning that many of the models that power it run entirely on device. For requests that require more processing power, Private Cloud Compute extends the privacy and security of Apple devices into the cloud to unlock even more intelligence. When using Private Cloud Compute, users’ data is never stored or shared with Apple; it is used only to fulfil their request. In a first for the industry, independent experts can inspect the code that runs on Apple silicon servers to continuously verify this privacy promise — an extraordinary step forward for privacy in AI"

Where and when has this been debunked exactly?

👍 yeah why is what’s app running in the background for so long ? What is it doing ? I don’t have that app anymore, but, previously would see more background usage than actual screen time.

I'm getting really worried about AI.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max and have been holding off getting an iPhone 16 Pro Max because I fear that Apple's AI will be spying on my and dowloading all of my data to teach AI.

Then I unknowingly upgraded to iOS 18.0.1 and apparently it have AI in it as well, so now I am feeling totally f'ed.

(Someone needs to come up with an open-source OS for iPhones - like Linux - but of course Apple will never allow that...)
Of course Apple and other phones spy on you why do you think the state allows us to have such devices without a license? It gives them a billion personal spies. Did you/we NOT listen to Edward Snowden? As soon as mobile phones, and other similar products, gained sufficient compute power on chip/on device to review our emails, photos, notes, recordings, location or tracking data, or listen to our phone calls for keywords/intention expression all WITHOUT high data transfer requirements that this would have needed in the OLD days to stream info to a central processing facility that is exactly what they do.

The state loves these capabilities, and more, that we can only imagine in our nightmares.

Apple expends a LOT of effort to stop unapproved OS's being installed so do not hold your breath for an open source OS.

Expect to hear a lot of justifications eg finding drug dealers, peado's, weirdos, terrorists, people smugglers etc but who is the bigger threat? Could it be uncontrolle, unjustified state surveillance? When will the line be crossed and how can we put the deep state back under control?

So, people don’t have a license for their iPhone because the CIA and FBI had Steve Jobs in their pocket?
I agree that the US government is not to be trusted in most regards (coming from a European), but you have presented nothing to the case of Apple literally having their devices call home with sensitive and private information, or directly to a third party.

Lucky you. Scared me a couple of times seeing, in my case, YouTube videos recommended about something I just talked about with friends.
Although, the most blatant example of this is practically explained by the person I was with having a Sony TV and an Alexa speaker.

Oh boy... let me guess, you have Whatsapp on your phone? Facebook? Use Google services? Ever buy something off Amazon? Linux for iPhone: why bother? Get a Linux phone!
You can Google it! 😂🤣

Yes, by all means, start panicking about privacy now...

Just because most people use those apps, does that mean that everybody does?
I have no social app on my phones (or macs for that matter). I use FaceTime.
I use the iPhones for phone calls, messaging, and banking. On my macs I use VPN, for a few reasons.

So I do not automatically assume everybody use internet the way I do. Because 99% probably does not
