In the UK you can purchase an iPad from the department store John Lewis and get an additional year of warranty included in the regular price. They also offer the option to add accidental damage coverage for £70 (compared to £129 for AppleCare+). The insurance is from Domestic & General, which is a big product insurer in the UK.

I appreciate AppleCare+ has the advantage of going directly via Apple, but for me that additional service is an expensive additional piece of mind.

I also feel the coverage period is stingy. Three years (like for the Mac) seems far more reasonable than just one extra year after the warranty period. I would prefer a higher excess and longer coverage period.

Definitely. I've always gotten AppleCare+ on anything I can get it on. Only once have I had to use it for damage caused by me (dropped a 5 and shattered the screen). The 3-4 other times I've used it over the last 10 years - it was a defective device, way out of warranty and each time Apple had us walking out with a new replacement in minutes. Recently my AirPods took a dump and ... Apple basically next day aired me a replacement. For free.

My wife's MBP 2017 - AppleCare+ is up next month. Battery says it needs replacement ... Apple is replacing the battery, keyboard, everything for free.

I've always had great experiences with my AppleCare+ - I will get it on everything I can get it on - especially my iPads.
Wait, they gave you replacements outside of the AppleCare period, beyond the two-year mark?

Apple offer 24 months too and you’ll find that is standard for most retailers including the likes of Curry’s. John Lewis just have excellent customer service if something does go wrong, much like Apple. Their accidental damage coverage as you say is cheaper and just as good when getting a replacement as what Apple offer. I’d sooner opt for that than Apple Care but don’t bother with either as I’m already insured anyway.

Yes, it has saved me multiple times with my iPad Pro 10.5”. (1 accidental damage, 2 “white spot” problems past the standard warranty.). I am now on a month to month plan, until I decide to replace with an upcoming 5G pro model.
