Clamshell mode means keeping the laptop closed, not open, while using it.
I understand that, I wanted my MBP display to start when I opened it, and it did not.

Here's the pictures you requested.

From my experience you have to "detect displays" to make it turn on again, I don't know if there is any easier way.

The iMac G5 doesn't support external monitors as well as the newer intel models without some soft modification.
I had this problem with my iBook as well and the first thing i did was google it.
G5 screen spanning.
Amazingly this simple search turned up what i needed.
Screen Spanning Doctor
As for the MacBook Pro. It will work fine as all Pro models have.
G5's do to i had one for 2 years with a 20" dell hooked next to my 2.0 g5 iMac 20"
here's my setup taken 5 min ago... (damn crappy phone cam). i use a 23" cinema. i love this monitor.
Do you mean the tracking? That's because your mouse acceleration settings are different. You can change these though, to make the Mac as "responsive" as you are used to. People can also make a pc as "unresponsive" as the macs they use.
Nice set up. Love the apple 23, but couldn't justify it to my needs (casual gamer). Also like the S50, couldnt live without sirius (and stern).
If people in the states are looking for a good monitor for cheap, try here. Frys has a 22' viewsonic for 199. yeah its refurbished, but people have had great luck with them. Thinking about pulling the trigger on one myself.
i use a 17inch monitor, but when i set it to mirror, it goes all widescreen on me and doesnt use the full screen space, what do i do?
Is it ok to run a MBP in clamshell mode, closed, more or less permanantly?
No heat issues... the macbook vents from the back. Clamshell mode is supported by Apple.
You can stretch your desktop over both screens. However you couldn't use screens with different resolutions, both screens would be set to the highest supported resolution on the small screen.
This is a different setup and only works because both screens you had were the same resolution. For your setup the dock and menu bar would have been stretched across both screens.
