I'm considering it (right now in 2017). Android Auto has Waze. iOS doesn't have Waze. I'm simply not using the iPhone very much. I have my iPad which I am happy with but for my phone it can be Android if it provides tools like Waze for navigation while driving on my radio screen since text messaging, email, web browsing and playing music work just fine when compared to the iPhone.

That said if Apple allows Waze on Car Play before I buy a new phone next year then I'll consider a iPhone.

Waze will never be on carplay, Apple will keep pushing it's pi$$ poor Apple maps onto its consumers. I have both carply and AA in my vehicle and really like using Waze on my vehicles big screen, although it is missing some features.

That's a real shame, and a whole other level of lousy. But hey, profits!
They have also done this with iPad Pro 12.9. It ships with the same 12W charger which powers the iPad Pro 9.7 and takes nearly 4-5hrs for full charge. If you buy Apple's $85 29W adapter it charges in around 2 hours. And this tablet also costs around 1k. Tim Cook will do ANYTHING to save a dollar. Anyone would think this is a midrange product for a midrange experience

Does the iPad also promise fast charging as a feature?

I wonder how the Pixel 2's version of the always on display will work.

On the S8 its nice but I found it annoying quick due to basically having two lock screens.

I'm new to android, so this may be common knowledge, but the setting "Unlock with Home button" will let you skip the lock screen. This takes away the lock screen which I like a lot better, personally.

Well this is my second attempt with Samsung software. The first attempt ultimately failed with me never getting used to the Samsung button arrangement where back is on the right. If I'm not mistaken, this is now configurable and I can restore the normal Android way in the S8 series.

I'm new to Android so back being on the right is more logical to me, but I did see that it can be configured. This is also my second attempt at Samsung (and Android). The first was an S5, and I gave it a solid 6 month try and hated the whole thing. This time, after just a couple days I am loving it.

I like to never say never, but I kind of agree on this one. Google has no incentive to give Apple this carrot (since they own Waze). One of the biggest business gaffs by Apple was not buying Waze when they had the chance and Apple Maps was getting crucified in the media. Waze could have brought a lot to Apple.

My truck has CarPlay and Android Auto. While I like Waze, I may use Google more because I like the ability to use Google Assistant to find a gas station or food place along my route. If you are in route, you can ask "Where is the nearest McDonalds?" (or whatever place you are looking for), and it will show you on the Map where they are along your route, and the amount of extra time it will take to stop there on the way. This is a huge benefit on trips. I haven't seen where you can do that in Apple or Waze. Waze of course wins heads down with traffic problems. I wish Google would just merge the two. I can say that many times with CarPlay on trips, I'd disconnect CarPlay and bring up Waze when we hit traffic problems.

Can you guys fill me in on Car play and Android Auto, mainly Android Auto. I recently bought my first car with Bluetooth. When I connect my phone with Bluetooth is that what you guys mean? It has buttons on the steering wheel to use Siri but I don't think it works with Android. It has a touch screen that's suppose to show what's on the phone like Waze I think but I have no idea how this works. It's a 2015 Honda Civic Si. I googled it when I got the car but never really figured anything out.

Car Play / Android Auto vs. connecting with Bluetooth is not the same thing. I don't think your car has Carplay... Honda did something earlier with allowing Siri I believe, but not positive.

With CarPlay / Android Auto, when you plug the phone in with a cable (I believe CarPlay is starting to have some wireless... but is very recent), the phone takes over the receiver. Functionality is largely equivalent on any CarPlay deck. You can use a navigation app that displays on the receiver (Google or Waze on Android Auto, Apple Maps on CarPlay... no other choices), use most audio apps like Apple Music, Spotify, podcast apps, etc.., and it will read your texts to you. In both cases you are very limited to these functions. Android Auto will also pass through notifications, but you can't run any other apps. With CarPlay, you can take control of the phone and use it while its connected to CarPlay, but the screens will be a little wonky, and no non-CarPlay apps will display. Android Auto locks you out of the phone while its in that mode. I've used both now and they are basically the same, except you benefit greatly on the Android side in having access to Waze. You'd have to replace the receiver in your Honda I believe to be able to do either.

You mean they haven't done that? I've never used Waze, so I don't really have experience with it, but I thought that was the point of the acquisition.

No, they are completely separate apps. I'm not sure if they are sourcing traffic data in Google Maps from Waze, but I am guessing not because the Waze ecosystem depends on the interaction with users to keep it current.

Nope, for some baffling reason they haven't merged them or just ripped waze's best features and put them into Gmaps. Don't forget this is the company that has a bazillion messaging/video/phone apps and can't figure out how to merge them.

Overall though I prefer Waze, the cartoony light maps they have are easier on my eyes for some reason. Of course I can't live without crowd sourced updates either.

Samsung once again forecasts record-breaking profits for Q3 2017

Samsung forecasts an operating profit of $12.8 billion in Q3 2017.
Samsung is set to record a revenue hike of 29% from the same period a year ago, with operating profits going up a massive 178%. The latest figures highlight a third straight quarter of record profits for Samsung. Back in Q1 2017, Samsung posted a profit of $9.9 billion, its best-ever first quarter, and followed it up with a Q2 profit of $12.5 billion, its most profitable quarter ever. That number is set to be eclipsed once again in Q3.

After using iOS could you use Android for an extended period of time?

Um what does that mean? I guess the iOS brainwashing module didn't work on me. I'm able to use other devices for extended periods of time without any severe side effects. In fact, I am actually enjoying it. I realize that is a concept on MR that defies all science, but its true.

Your rant aside, if you've used iOS for an extended period then using Android is an exercise in frustration. Android simply isn't as intuitive as iOS.

The frustration goes both ways. I’ve used iOS as my main platform for years earlier on, but within the last few years I’ve been going back and forth. When I’m on iOS, it’s frustrating when some functionality isn’t available and when I’m on Android, the lack of polish still gets me occasionally, but that’s been improving lately.

That's really not true anymore. Android is as easy or complex as you want to make it, and a few OEM's have gone out of their way to clean up their settings menu.

Conversely, iOS seems to be getting clunkier in some areas. The new notification scheme is a disaster, and they've swapped around a few settings that make no sense (why is auto-brightness now in accessibility vs display, for example?)

Exactly. Within the last year or so I’ve been a couple of times caught in a situation where I’ve tried to figure out how to return to the previous view in an iOS app without going all the way to the home screen. That Android back button would’ve been much nicer than a quick game of guess the gesture.
