However, the real beauty of the wireless charger isn't so much in not having to deal with wires, it's more about the ability to regular top off your battery when your phone is idle. Instead of idling on a desk, it's idling on a wireless charging pad/stand, charging up when not in use. That's the real convenience of wireless charging.

This is true.

Using a charging stand (or a charging pad) instead of a cable gives a little more freedom, but still limits you to the stand/pad in the end.

Proximity charging would have been innovative, this isn't.

And the fact that they could have delivered this in 2015/2016 is the thing that sticks out for me.

Agreed. The hope was that if Apple was going to be late to the game with wireless charging, that they would leapfrog the current technology.

Who knows. These are rumors so maybe Apple will still surprise us.

I've only ever had an iPhone since smartphones have been around. I'm tempted by Android, particularly the upcoming Galaxy S8 - curious to see what it actually has.

I'm using a 6 Plus, but before it, I've had the following
Alcatel
Huawei
Firefox
Nokia
Motorola
Microsoft
Blackberry
LG
HTC
Vodafone

I've tested iOS, Android, Firefox, Windows etc

However, as I said in the other thread, nothing over the last few years have made me sit up and say wow. Only thing close has been the Xiaomi Mii Mix. Will I move back to Android anytime soon? I doubt it, not because of anything bad , but nothing stands out. Same applies to the up coming iPhone, and unless it's something completely different, or a major overhaul of the existing range, this 6 plus will have to carry me for another year or 2.

CES and MWC use to be good to go to, now it's just another event imo, with a few concepts, or a few devices that stand out

I'm stuck between a rock and hard place - my work has changed and have to give back my work 6s. I now have to get a new phone and not sure if I should stay with another iPhone or look at the Galaxy S7.
Last Android I had was the S2 so I am sure things have changed a lot since then.
For those that have changed what do you do with your music? Do you still have to use Kies?

Kies to do what? Back up? Back in the day, we used Kies pretty much to back up and restore or something along those lines. Why not just save your music in a folder, plug in the Android device, and copy and paste it in a similar way to copying to a hard drive.

I might pull the trigger on this, and import it.

I was tempted to go back to Android a few weeks ago but stayed with iPhone. As they say: it just works.
The ONLY thing I miss from android and my old blackberry is the notification light for new mail/messages. Just something I personally like, although the iPhone probably will never get one.
Yes I know you can have the flash go off with notifications but not very professional when in a mtg.
That's my 2 cents.

Yep, agree. And now there is a rumor that the iPhone 8 may feature IRIS scanning, too. Wireless charging and IRIS scanning, this Fall, may suddenly become convenient and accepted. ;)

Regarding picking up your device to use, honestly, unless your device is at absolute zero battery life, you can still pick up your phone off your wireless charger to use. I do it all the time. In fact, I use charging stands (not flat pads) and can often use my phone even as it's on the charging stand.

However, the real beauty of the wireless charger isn't so much in not having to deal with wires, it's more about the ability to regular top off your battery when your phone is idle. Apple may be behind on some tech but they do get it right usually. The fingerprint scanner was much better than anything out there on phones, it took Samsung until the S6 to get the scanner right. Another example is google wallet that no one used until Apple came out with Apple pay and everyone copied Apple on the implementation.

Everything I've read/listened to regarding 'proximity' charging so far paints a picture of it being incredibly difficult to achieve without it being very inefficient and requiring huge amounts of energy. I'm not comfortable thinking about what's flying through the air right through me to get my phone charged wirelessly from distance.

I'd be happy with a very efficient version of Qi but we all know it's unlikely Apple will implement a more universal industry standard and go with some proprietary garbage what requires their hardware.

That looks promising! If you get it please report back with your thoughts!

I'll do so, but this is very expensive, and not on open market. So would have to import, and i might be pressed with customs and all sorts of taxes.

So hopefully we get to go to China to chat with some manufacturers there re accessories , and then might look to find one.

The Mi Mix is very much a difference maker or a game changer in its design. Virtually no bezels, but camera placement is very odd. I would have thought that Xiaomi would have still placed the camera at the top, and have the bottom the bezeless part. Never the less, its a pretty unique design, but would be interesting to see if the Mi Mix 2 might be full y bezeless.

Going from a 6+ to an LG V20, which has an amazing quad DAC feeding its 3.5 phone/speaker jack. Apple phones no longer have that functionality. The V20 charges via USB-C, so could also hook directly to a new MAC should I get one.

Isn't it funny....you can get a new V20 and it is easier to connect to a new mackbook pro than a new iphone.

Lending more proof to Apple bringing inductive wireless charging: https://9to5mac.com/2017/02/13/appl...t-to-rumor-of-wireless-charging-for-iphone-8/

Apple joins Wireless Power Consortium/Qi, lending weight to rumor of wireless charging for iPhone 8

While early rumors suggested that Apple was holding out for long-range charging, without the need to place the iPhone on a charging pad, those hopes appear to have been dashed by more recent reports. These suggest that Apple will, like other manufacturers, use simple inductive charging.

Now who is betting that they will somehow change it and make it a proprietary wireless solution?
Whole new set of accessories to sell.....

If they're joining the consortium, don't you think it'll be the universal qi version?

Good point but......when has Apple not gone proprietary? I really hope they stick to the standards.
Can you imagine them letting me charge my new iPhone 8 on my Samsung fast wireless charger?

Apple is late to the game in wireless charging? As far as I am concerned, smartphone makers are way late. My toothbrush had inductive charging back in the early 2000s.
[doublepost=1487032746][/doublepost]Honestly, if the Note 8 is all that and a bag of chips, I would do it.

If it's a $1000 iPhone I am switching full time to the Note 8 . Apple's demanding too much for phones these days and Android is just as good if not better than iOS . I will kinda miss the apps and the integration tho

I almost went Note 7 this go around. However, I go back and forth between Android and iPhone. I'm really excited to see what both Samsung and Apple provide this year. We shall see right?

Me too. It's been 2 years since I went all in on iOS! Time to see Sammy's response to the OLED iPhone . They have a glorious opportunity to undercut the iPhone on pricing this time around

I'm not considering a phone in 2017 as I'm on a 2 year contract. Now I have an Apple Watch I won't even look at anything other than an iPhone when I next upgrade in 2018. To be honest my days of being excited by phones is over and i'll likely get a year old device (7S) next time around as I just can't justify spending £1000 on a phone anymore.

There are lot of us that use both Samsung and Apple here on MR. It should be an exciting year for us as both companies are going to release some great products this year! :)

Unlike the phones from 2016 though, the OLED iPhone and bezel less Galaxy S8 are pretty exciting imo .2016 was overall meh. But I agree $1000+ for a phone is kinda pushing it.
