Its thanks to Android turning on the heat on Apple. Althouth I am glad he changed his mind about iPad on iOS 11.ios 11 update on iPhone is nothing compared to what the iPad got. Getting the 12.9 iPad later this month.

Tim Cook always needs the competition and his customers to tell him what he needs to do. It took the iPad sales nosediving for years before he finally came to his senses with the file manager and the other features which should have been added yesterday. Same goes for OLED and wireless charging. I cant think of a single worthwhile feature which Apple added suo moto ever since Tim Cook took the reins.

They aren't deleted. Apple only hides the icons and unlike Android if you encounter a related link to the app anywhere it wont redirect to the installed app and ask you to reinstall the stock apps
No they are deleted, you can't use the app after that unless you re download the app from the App Store. Nobody said you could chose default apps, yet.

Further to your "opinion" Because you "can't think of a worthwhile feature " the world does not agree with you, as Apple is taking a nose dive toward 1 trillion dollar valuation. You might want to review the hundreds or thousands of updates added since the 5s.

No, you don’t delete the app. If it was deleted, you couldn’t get it back from the store with airplane mode on.

No they aren't. You can reinstall the app without internet. They are just hidden from view. Another one of Apple's tricks on gullible users. I could do the same on Android using pretty much any launcher for carrier apps which cant be uninstalled

Is that why Intel who demolishes AMD, had to cave in to Ryzen which sells a quarter of what the i series does?

Yes the processor market was worthless till Ryzen came in same as what's currently happening in the smartphone market. Another parallel being when AMD was competitive with its Athlon series and kept Intel on their toes with Apple pre Cook era

Since 2014 there has not been a SINGLE worthwhile feature added to iPhones. If you want to know what I mean by worthwhile look at the features added to iPhone 8. Now that's a real upgrade

I would argue that water resistance, dual speakers, 3GB of ram and the dual camera were worthwhile features.

Apple provided functionality that seems to satisify 99% of the users. The other 1%, maybe nothing will satisfy the small, vocal minority.

I just want to clarify, since 2014 there hasn't been a single worthwhile feature FOR YOU. There have been plenty of hardware and software enhancements that I find worthwhile. The rumored next iphone is just another iteration of iphone, in my book, no real game changers like touch id, but probably a worthwhile buy, just like all previous iphones.

So in the premise of the thread, I won't switch to android, but if I got a free android model, I would play around with it.

It doesn't work the same way in IOS 11. Deleting maps and asking Siri for directions requires an install of maps from the app store.

exactly....

But Techcrunch burst our bubble Thursday, reporting that you’ll be able to remove these app icons from your home screen in iOS 10 but that doing so won’t actually delete the apps.

“Because these pre-loaded services are baked into iOS, the application binary remains present,” Techcrunch wrote, paraphrasing Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software engineering.

Just tried this and it won't allow me to download mail with airplane mode on. But I agree that it's not really deleted but hidden.

^^^^ THIS^^^^ try deleting Apple Maps and use Google Maps as your default app. Now ask Siri for directions......DOH!
This still makes no sense. You allow people to delete/hide the app but not let us use a different app? I don't get it, one of the things that gets me heated even if I prefer IOS.

Only the vocal minority asked for this feature in the first place. The clueless people using an iPhone usually organised all the useless apps in an Apple folder and were satisfied. Hiding an app and deleting it are 2 different things. If you have a 16GB iPhone doesnt make any difference.

For everyone which is why the iPhone 6 records are still unbroken 3 years later. The iPhone 8 with its OLED display and wireless charging, elimination of bezels, iris scanner seeks to correct all that.

Cant comment on iOS 11 till public beta is out

Apple wouldn't fix it if it wasn't broken.
So your position is any manufactured product with updates is because it was broken in a previous incarnation. Ok, you're entitled to your opinion. But specifically discussing things apple, doesn't seem their customers think things are broken, I don't.

You brought the word "broken" into this. I meant that there's 2 possibilities. One being that a useful feature wasn't present on an earlier model and another being the feature was inferior to competing products on the market. Both need fixing and they are being fixed.

Yes they do. Because the iPhone 8 reads out like a laundry list of features I wanted in an iPhone as also for millions of customers.

You brought the word "corrected" into this, which implies it was broken, which is not. That being said, there are two possibilities: 1) a update wasn't deemed necessary and in the course of updating the product line, something was improved as all manufacturers strive to do, or to add updates, which is what all manufacturers do.

Neither needs fixing and sometimes a feature, such as an ir blaster or sd card comes and goes.

Thankfully apple has choices for it's consumers, and while we know nothing about what apple will release until the reveal, you can be sure there are meaningful updates that don't just look good on a spec sheet.

I can't stress how much easier it is to use the S8 on a daily basis versus my iPhone.

Even something as simple as glancing at my S8 for notifications that I might have missed... My S8 sits on a wireless charging stand (not dock, so it's actually angled upright) and with Always On Display, I can casually and easily glance at my device to see if I've missed anything. Even if there's nothing, it's nice to be able to look over and check the time. All without needing any effort or input from me. And all whilst my S8 is charging on the wireless charger, topping off my battery.

Whereas my iPhone has no indication whatsoever of a notification if I should miss it the first time it comes up. No notification light nor any form of Always on Display (LCD screen after all). You have to press the Home button to wake the iPhone just to see if you have anything.

It's little things and features like this that add up to make the S8 experience easier and better to use.

PS.
Yknow what else is cool? My wireless charging stand is right next to my work keyboard. If I hard-press the home button on the S8 and just turn my face toward it slightly (again, wireless charging stand means the S8 is sitting at an upright angle), I can unlock my phone with facial unlock without even needing to pick up my S8! If I wasn't a private person, I'd demonstrate it. It's absolutely effortless, fast, and reliable -- literally just turning my head slightly to face my device, and it unlocks. It's also easy to use the phone even while it remains on the charging stand. If I want to reply to a text, for example, I can just start gesture-typing with my finger.

Believe it or not, THIS is what's holding me back from getting the Moto G5 Plus over the OnePlus 5 for my first Android phone (see here). The thought of dealing with a mini-USB cable and making sure it's always facing the correct way has me concerned. The USB-C cable on the OnePlus 5 would surely be easier than that mini-USB. Logically it's not worth spending $200 more on a phone to avoid a type of cable, but man I've always hated those mini-USB cables! :)

I've always hated then too. Plus they dig into the design of post phones with the sharp teeth.

Yeah but doesn't always on display just give you the notification icon, but no information or content at all? In it's current iteration it's no better than a notification LED (although the iPhone doesn't have that either). I may be wrong though, I haven't played with AOD since the Note 7 so not sure if Samsung and/or Google beefed it up. IMO AOD should have some content to it, maybe the email subject line, the actual text, etc. This would make it truly hands free as you can just glance at it, instead of having to unlock the phone anyway because you don't know if that email or text is important.

I agree completely. Having switched to Android, I will occasionally get to longing for iPhone and iOS... and that longing quickly disappears after I actually use iOS. There are so many small things present in Android that make my day to day tasks/phone habits so much easier, and when I use iOS I catch myself thinking "This is the IPHONE. The premium phone to buy, even still in 2017. It doesn't have this feature? Or this? Or this?" It surprises me, really, as I NEVER would have foreseen myself typing something like this prior to switching.

Ironically, I keep coming back to iOS after attempting to switch to Android. I tried switching to the Pixel last October and, most recently, to the HTC U11, both of which lasted about a week. I think it just comes down to the fact that I prefer iOS. When I switched to iOS in 2014, after 6 years on Android, I became accustomed to it very quickly. When attempting to do the reverse switch, I felt like I had to force myself to become reacclimated with Android.

With that being said, my wife is a devout Android user. I upgraded her phone to an unlocked Galaxy S8 last week - the hardware is absolutely stunning. Apple needs to bring their A game in September, as the S8 is an incredibly tough act to follow.

Nice. Does it work with a case on the phone, or no?

Ah, check reviews. I'm sure it comes up.

I use my S8 naked.

AOD does give you a bit more info than a light, like what the notification actually is (though you could install apps that customize the notification lights, too. So for example, you can make it so red light = Gmail or something).

I agree with you, more info or subject lines would really complete AOD.
