I'm trying to figure out if I'm overreacting here. I open up the Apple Maps app and search for something, and this Guide pops up.

Dolly Parton in a skimpy low-cut red outfit, with her huge fake breasts. Right in my face. Apple Maps is rated for ages 4+.

I'm trying to keep this sort of porn-y content away from someone in my family for as long as I can. I know it's a losing battle and I'm probably wasting my time. I think I'll have to move everyone in my family off of Apple products if this keeps happening.

Am I overreacting or do you think this is a bit over the top on a Maps app?

Is there any way to disable Apple's forced Guides?

No. No way to disable any guides, and probably will never have ways to do so.
you just notice Apple’s most recent push to populate more ads in their first party apps. It’s a slap in the face of every single apple customer Pretty much.
As for giving a 4 year old a phone, my answer is never. Not even 6 year olds. 8 to 9 you can start to consider. Instead, teach kids the importance of any Other important things than using tech.
Seriously, all apple first party apps should be marketed as 8+ or even 17+ only.

Just to clarify, the child is quite a bit older than 4, I just mentioned Apple's age rating, that they technically think the image is ok to be forced on a 4 year old child.

No offense meant to Dolly Parton I'm sure she's a great person.

Ok fair enough, it seems I'm being a bit silly here, sounds like the image isn't that bad. Thanks for the replies.

I'd just say this in regard to the image…

If it was someone else, I might be with you. But Dolly Parton's heart is far bigger than her assets. Not even my wife (and she has lots of reasons) has any issue with her. Dolly is about as humble and self-deprecating as any person out there could be. Mother Theresa, no, but certainly not 'porn-y' by any measure.

Her character and what she's done for others, quietly and without expectation of reward, is something to hold up to your kid as an example. Yeah, she's 'trashy' and she herself has admitted that - but it's her 'entertainer look' and not WHO she is.

So, yeah. Overacting a bit.

I am slightly on the fence here, but leaning toward supporting the OP. Whether the image is inappropriate is one thing, but users should either get to opt out of "forced" anything, or if it is forced on us the content should more more neutral so that the issue would less likely to even come up. Personally I think the image is not nearly skimpy enough and I would prefer someone younger and thinner to be forced on my screen. So I do not say this as a prude but just trying to put in a fair word.

Dolly Parton is awesome. I do not have kids but I'd have a hard time giving a kid younger than a teenager a phone. My friend who has a kid bought their kid one of those Verizon Wireless kids watches that are extremely limited but allow tracking and calls - thought that was pretty cool.

Cool thing imo is - you're worried about what influences your kid and their safety. That's awesome.

My son got his first iPhone at 14. He and his sister were attending the same school and and my wife after years of being at home for them was beginning to take classes and find work. So, we needed to be able to get a hold of them. Mostly that was me, because I was closest and had flexibility to leave work at any time.

I got him an 8GB iPhone 4s for $25. He was put on a 2GB line, so he was highly dependent upon WiFi. That meant he couldn't use the phone during school hours for whatever because he'd have to get on the school's WiFi - which meant they'd know.

He handled it well though, so he got an iPhone SE 64GB brand new for his 15th birthday and I upgraded his line to 6GB. Upgraded him to an SE2 in early 2021.

My daughter got her first phone when she turned 11. That was a necessity. Her brother is five years older than her and he headed off to high school, which was 30 minutes from her school. I needed to be able to get a hold of her.

Her phone was a 64GB iPhone 5 (my wife's old iPhone) on a 2GB line. She promptly lost it the first day she had it. Fortunately, we were able to get it back. She has since gone through two phones, both beaten to heck because she doesn't take care of her stuff like her brother. Consequently, the new iPhone SE2 I got her earlier this year is inside an Otterbox Defender Pro. She hates cases, but this phone is brand new, so she has to eat it.

As someone who was once four I can assure you a child does not look at that photograph and see anything sexual.
It won't be a problem unless you, the adult, choose to make it one.

And for the record, no. I don't think that image is inappropriate for small kids, unless you're Amish (which... you're on a computer so clearly not?) they'll see "worse" on TV and in daily life regularly.

That said. While I'm a big advocate for kids having age appropriate access to technology (we got our first Mac, a Performa from Sears, when I was around that age,) this isn't 1990 anymore. Smart phones, tablets and other connected devices require supervision if they're allowed at all, and a child that young really shouldn't have their own device.

Dolly Parton is the sweetest, nicest pop culture figure of our age. She does nothing controversial and your child could in fact benefit from learning about her kind deeds over the years.

I really need to know, how young are you as a parent that you really don’t know who Dolly is?

It’s true! I spent years rapping Nicki Minaj as a kid and only when I revisited her songs as an adult did I understand the double entendres and innuendo.

If this photo is inappropriate, then don’t take the children to the beach 🏖️

Regarding the picture, I agree with you. I don’t think you are over reacting. You see, people will tell you that content is fine because in our society this kind of content and behaviour (inappropriate dressing etc.) is normalized. But it’s not normal. If I had to teach my kids using that image I would tell them that this is how inappropriate women dress and behave.

But I don’t think 4 years old needs or should have a smartphone or any phone. I might consider getting smartphone for my children when they turn 16. Smartphone and internet content is largely dumb. It makes our kids dum. It might make our live easier just handing a smartphone to a child to shut him/her up and watch cartoons or play stupid AppStore games with drooling face. But that’s not right imho. You make kids, put some effort to it. I play real world games with my kids, puzzles, coloring, legos, read books, etc.

Uhm...what? This has to be a parody, right?
