Me too. Both iPhone and iPad. I’m literally shocked more people are not complaining about this. It’s horrid.

It disappears if you change to Light Mode. But reappears in Dark Mode. Both devices. So it must be a bug.

Wow ok, I use dark mode so that must be it. I appreciate the info, hopefully they fix it in the next update.

Edit: so I tested it and dark mode is the problem. As soon as I switched my phone to light mode the albums looked normal again.

I'm having this issue, too. Unable to tag people or pets or see an option to find more of that person/pet.

Yeah, that isn't right. Not sure what's causing that bug, but I’m guessing it's working fine for most people (myself included), which may be why there aren't many complaining about it.

Here's how it should look.

That’s….quirky. And I definitely don’t like the Ken Burnseyness that appears like it’s supposed to be there. Any movement when looking and sorting through a lot of information is distracting.

Huff….why me…whyyyy me.

That effect can be turned off. Tap (↑↓) > View Options > Movie Preview. Maybe try toggling that to see if it fixes anything for you.

Now…..hear me out. Don’t hate the player, hate the game. Don’t shoot the messenger. Misunderstand we wrong. Be nice and rewind.

I don’t "like" the new Photos app. But I think I see what they are trying to do AND I LIKE IT.

First off, all they had to do was NOT remove the tabs and 90% of complaints would have died down.

Apart from THAT? ITS way way WAAAAAY faster and snappier. It’s got MORE features. It seems to have a more COMPLETE feature set. It can easily be expanded within the same framework (I bealive).

But it’s inconsistent design wise. Some features and/or buttons seems to have been put in place 30 minutes before release. Some things are not where you’d expect them to be and some things that naturally belong together are not together. It’s also buggy….but not as much as iOS 17 has been of late. But it seems unfinished…and should just have been a beta…..it should have been separate from regular Photos App as a test run. Not a full release….and the complaints people have are not JUST reluctance to change. Some changes are really really bad.

I’d really REALLY liked if I could be able to hide an entire folder, not just pictures within. They save the folder pictures are from…so it’s retained. But I collect random stuff I’d like not clutter my «stream». MEMES…and watches and cars and furniture.

Thanks for the honest take. Remember, these applications are always evolving. People act like they’re never going to change again and they are stuck with some final product. There will be bumps in the road but give them a chance. See where the road lies ahead. There’s nothing wrong with giving a negative opinion about a feature but don’t lose your mind.

I think preparing the ground for change is AS important or perhaps even MORE important than engineering the changes well themselves. Here Apple failed catastrophically with Photos. I think they perhaps are stuck in an old mentality about their customers, where they think they’re all loyal and they will absorb anything Apple does. But things have changed. The product is mature and te device has a much more prominent place. People are much more dependent on it working as they expect. Apple can’t keep experimenting on users like before WITHOUT a much better dialogue with them.

So, to recap. If they fail to prepare, they fail with implementation.

I do hope Apple will take note of this feedback.

I should be surprised if Apple is even present in this forum.

It's taken me a few days to think about whether I like the new/redesigned Photos app. I like the new ‘remove objects from picture’ function (we Germans only got that with 18.4), but finding photos in albums has become a bit more difficult for me. (I currently use HashPhotos for tagging/categorising photos. It's just easier).

The problem that seems most obvious to me with the Photos app is that Apple is trying to fit too many features on too small a screen. I shouldn't be surprised if Photos suffers the same fate as iTunes and is eventually split into many small sub-apps - a photo viewer, a photo editor, an album manager. Or something like that.

I’m trying to add albums to pinned collections using the plus button that says ‘any collection or album’, but I’m only able to choose from three things under the albums subheading on the next screen - 2 albums and a folder? Doesn’t sound like ‘any album’ to me…

Anyone else experiencing this?

Oh I’ll bet you there might even be one or 12 Apple employees (or former) here. Not spying, they are Apple users just like us. And if Apple were smart, they’d for sure keep tabs on this echo chamber… or jungle telegraph if you will. We wouldn’t know who they are of course as that wouldn’t be swell having us hammer them constantly for things not working.

In ANY case they will at least have scrapers out there picking up topics and sentiments. Every corporation has people sorting through newspapers and online blogs and other stuff which they collate into a dossier. Not many bother looking at these, but they are collected and have been for decades. I’ve seen one or two. Names of company employees underlined, topics etc. Not really a secret or a biggie.

I definitely understand your point. It’s all in the details.

I’ve certainly read a large number of posts from people complaining that Apple doesn’t innovate.
I’m not saying the changes to Photos are innovative but they are different.

Some of the complaints, in my opinion, are justified.
I get the impression from some that they just wanted to hate it from the start.

There were quite a few complaints that could be easily solved once they discovered the Customize button.

I’m seeing a full screen of Suggestions, Albums, Shared Albums, People and Pets…

Can you click on the Albums heading?

Very good point. We complain when they don’t innovate, we complain when they do. They didn’t innovate as they should have.
Opinions are a dime a dozen. Overall, my experience is quite good using my 16 pro on 18.5. They will never make everyone happy and I think forums like this attract users who are more critical because, well, that’s what we do. It’s a hobby. The general public probably doesn’t care at all.

Probably very true. A company like Apple will have ways to gather data, opinions, etc without needing forum members.

Change ≠ innovation. The photos app isn’t innovation, it’s perhaps not even progress. It’s just change.

There’s a psychological principle called reluctance to change. We humans will oppose any change, even if we consciously know it is for our benefit or that it’s good. Our brain finds comfort it what it knows and understands and “fear” newness. Most likely it’s a trait from jungle times to conserve energy or get us to avoid dangerous behaviour. But it is a real thing.

iPhone has not been innovative in the last….6-7 years. Which is ironically why it’s so popular. People want what they know. But it’s now become Apples Achilles heel. Anytime they try something new, they get HAMMERED.

I spend a lot of time in the Photos app to organize new photos or just enjoy what I have. What I’ve liked the most are the customization options in places liked Pinned Collections or just the ability to hide what I don’t use. The new sort and filter features are useful too. I find these all to be useful changes.

I think the problem for some is the forced nature of changes like this and I get it.

I like this with new Photos as well. Honestly I never did that in the old one because I only use dedicated folders on my compooter and I tag like there’s no tomorrow.

It’s WAY easier to find stuff with dedicated (personal, not generic) tags. I have a «WTF» tag for crazy stuff, “Finger” for when a fingertip is in front of the lens, but I like the photo, “beer”, “drunk friends”, “fat-me” so I find those old photos fast…

But nothing in Apple Photos 18 is new, revolutionary, innovative or recent ideas. It’s a slight progression if anything. Which perhaps is what they were trying for to silence the 8ers…but they still completely under appreciated some of the functions they removed.

Apple Photos now is just a more matured version of itself, but epigenomics turned off the wrong stuff along the way…and new stuff didn’t come out quite right.

Truthfully, no smartphone has been innovative in 6-7 years. It’s old technology. It’s mostly aesthetics, tweaks, slight improvements. Our expectations can never be met until something completely different comes along.

I want a stronger search function that searches in the captions section of your photo. Because I put the notation B&W on all my many black-and-white photos. I need to be able to just put that in search and find all my black-and-white photos. That currently is not showing up for me.

Tagging. We need proper tags. I suspect that’s how albums work in Photos, but they don’t show up on other software and Photos don’t pick up exciting tags.

It already searches captions. If you’re not seeing that, then something is bugged on your device.

macOS version already has keywords (tags), so it should be simple for Apple to bring it to iOS. I doubt they will, though.
