It only takes one apple to spoil a bunch! :(
I don't know 'who' in Apple decided to say "Hey let's change the Photos app".
Wasn't this shown to the public beta-testers?
Yes, we all saw this during the beta period and there was all the same talk then, too. I can only speak for myself, but I absolutely filed feedback…

That would be the same as admitting they were wrong, and it's rare that Apple does that.
So true. They ruined Books in iOS 16 and haven't looked back. I've been slowly transferring over to Kindle.

As far as Photos, they've been progressively removing any way for users to organize their own photos for quite a while, in favor of automatic methods. This iOS 18 version just continues that. It's most likely improving things for the majority of "snap, share and go" users, at the expense of those who actually care to do their own curation. Next on the chopping block will likely be any kind of editing features, aside from an "enhance" button and a chat interface to ask AI to make edits.

It looks like I’m in the minority, but I like the new changes.

I like the Key Photo view in Albums most of the time, but like the List View on some occasions.

Pinned Collections can be different on each device. At first I thought it should sync, but now I’m glad it doesn’t. The way I consume and organize photos on each device is different. So having Pinned Collections allows the ability to surface customized Collections per device.

There are some Collections I won’t use. I like that I can completely hide those easily plus I can order Collections so my most used come first in the list.

I like the sorting and filtering options.

The new options on 18.4 to order Media Types and Utilities is very useful to me. I also like the ability to see photos that are not in any Album.

As far as improvements, I’d like some sort of change to the way scrolling stops/bounces at the floating bar with Years Months All. It’s just not needed in my opinion.

I wish Memories would have an option to turn off the auto generated Memories while still allowing us to create our own Memories.

Overall, I enjoy the app more mostly because of the customization options.

Well I am glad to see some positive opinons, even if I am lukewarm overall there are some features that are an improvement. My main complaint is that there is no way I can see to look at every photo on your phone by default in the main album.

I'm curious what you mean - is that not what you get when you swipe down?
Well I took a photo of my work laptop in order to update the common laptop on the classroom but it wouldn't show up there nor in recent photos, only in screenshots. I just took a screenshot of my home screen and the same thing though it does show up in screenshots and recent photos.

What I've found to be another issue with the Photos app is that it seemingly ALWAYS is trying to "save battery" so it never syncs across. Even if I'm at 100%, it'll just sit there with a yellow circle around my Profile picture and I have to tap and then tap Resume. Again. Both of my Macs do this, too, but not nearly as often as on my iPhone or iPad, where that's almost 100% of the time.

Silly question - are you sure you aren't just accidentally looking at a filtered view of your main library? The filtering (up/down) arrow options on the main view are sticky, so if at some point in the past you turned off screenshots under View Options then the main library view will not be showing screenshots, ever.

The View Options also don't turn the Filter icon blue, so it's perhaps not obvious that you are looking at a filtered view.

Good grief, thank you for this! Very helpful that was it!

I hate the change they did to the Photo app with 18.4. When I go into an Album it shows a picture behind the pictures and I can't find anything in the albums now. Is there any way to change the background to just black inside an album?

Interesting thread. Because I've stopped even trying to understand the iOS Photos app 2 redesigns ago. I consider myself lucky that I can still find the list of all photos and pull stuff out from there.
You and me both...and I'm still on 17!

Apple Photos scares the bejeesus out of me. I have no control and I feel blessed if it sort of works. I really really REALLY like having my photos in proper folders and not a swimming pool of photos with perfectly curated virtual folders. (Yeah, I know ther is a folder structure within the Photos container...but have you rummaged around in there? It's like a hoarders paradise of files..)

havent found anything online with anybody having this issue either

I see a photo above the other photos. You can turn that off in the app.
Click on the up/down arrows->View Options->Movie Preview. Just uncheck that.

I don’t ever see a photo behind other photos.

I think a lot of the complaints are merely user error or misunderstanding.
No, and knowing there’s 28 pages of other folks complaining about all of these changes, it’s not just “user error” or a misunderstanding. Most folks were happier with the 4 tabs at the bottom, including your photo library as one of them with just your basic folders. They could have easily added all the extra cruft to one of those tabs instead of forcing everyone to organize and “figure it out” as they go. And not only that, but there’s been a lot of quality of life type updates that have “helped”, but it’s not the same.

Opinions are great if they’re your own. Start imposing them on others and then you start seeing the issues.

Like, for example, turning off the photo/video preview- sure you can turn it off, but then you have to go thru and turn it off for each and every folder?? Ugh..
