I understand that the chances of the next iPhone having 2GB of ram is really high, and since I bought this phone outright instead of on contract this time i don't mind if I need to upgrade or not.

However,

If iOS9 is like snow leopard in that it focuses on optimisation rather than new features, do you think that those with the iPhone 6 and 6 plus will feel less of a need to upgrade, or do you think it will just get worst?

I don't think the phone needs more ram. We do have a very loud minority complaining about more ram every chance they get, but most people use their phone like a phone and not a laptop and therefore have no need to waste money on more ram.

LOL? If you are fine with Safari tabs and apps reloading then good for you but others needs true multitasking. Waste money for more RAM? Then lets go for 512MB or even lower.

I don't think he's asking for less RAM, simply stating that this amount should be sufficient?

Yeah I've thought the same thing, iOS 9 will almost certainly have memory optimising features such as what they did with Mavericks. However, they will probably add more anyway just to be on the safe side and for publicity.

I laughed at that sentence. It's going to be fall of 2015 for newer iPhone model. RAM costs are at all time low. When budget $100 Android phones have 2 GB RAM, then it would be shameful for Apple to sell $700 phone with just 1 GB RAM.

The extra RAM DOES make day and night difference when it comes to multi-tasking and app reloading.

iOS 9 will be optimized like Snow Leopard is merely a rumor. Going by Apple's track record, iOS 9 will be even more buggy and purposely slow down the following devices : iPad Air 1, iPhone 5/5c and iPad minis.

I have least hope for it. We have left the days of smooth 60fps scrolling and fast responsive touch far behind along with iOS 7.

If at all Apple releases next iPhone with just pathetic 1 GB of RAM, people can buy as many next gen iPhones as they want. I will just vote with my wallet. As simple as that.
My 5S can continue to work and stutter for 1 more year.

Opening up multiple tabs in Safari and running multiple apps at once is not something I ever do. I use my phone like a phone, not a desktop and therefore have no problems nor any need for more ram.

While it's not something you do there are others who do. Safari on an iDevice is still buggy and is not up to the level of Google Chrome and other browsers. I don't have to worry about opening multiple tabs on my Nexus 4 phone and worry about Chrome crashing or reloading, it just works. I can't give Apple a pass on this anymore because iOS and iDevices have been around for more than 5 years.

A reliable web browser on either an iPhone or iPad should be a solid experience. It's still not.

This is the most ridiculous thing I've ever read.

Did you even read what you wrote before you hit "post"?

The concept of a phone has changed. This is no longer the era of Nokia 3210 or Blackberry Pearl.

So of us do use smartphones as power devices.

So do I, and I'm very happy with my 6+. Does it need more RAM? Not really, it's not like it's totally unusable with 1 GB. And I'm sure the majority would agree with me.

Would it be nice to have more RAM? Absolutely. But I use it for light browsing, and focus more on apps. Anything serious is always done on a desktop, be it coding, research, or typing documents.

It seems that you don't need a smartphone at all, whereas some of us need better iPhones. I do indeed use my phone like a laptop and in a 64GB 6+ retailing at £700, I absolutely *need* more RAM. My phone simply doesn't perform well enough on the tasks I use it for. Adding more RAM is a simple and cheap thing for Apple to do but they skimp on it for $$$. The trouble is, they skimped with 1GB for one generation too many and the 6/6+ don't even have enough RAM to get by.

I don't use Touch ID, Apple Pay, the video camera, stocks app, passbook, reminders, Game Center, parallax, Airdrop or any games but I expect you might be annoyed it I asked Apple to remove the facility because I don't need it?

The 6/6+ have more than enough ram to get by. iOS is much more memory-efficient than Android.

Mine doesn't have enough, let alone more than enough.
I can use one browser tab, one app, make a phonecall, send SMS, watch a video etc. I need to do more than that, and did with my iPhone 5. That two generations older iPhone had the same 1GB of RAM but because it was 32bit the system used much less RAM, consequently leaving more free for apps and browsers to use. So you're happy with the 6+ in effect having less RAM than an iPhone from two generations prior?

I want solid evidence that Apple has intentionally, and by extension maliciously, slowed down older devices using code that was designed for the sole purpose of using system resources for no gain.

I have never seen this evidence, nor will I ever. Because it's 100% false. I guess it's so much easier to just believe what you want to believe rather than actually research reasons why devices might get slower as more and more features are added.

Apple should make it perfectly clear what will happen on older devices then. A guy posted this in another thread, iOS prompting him to upgrade from 7.1.2 to 8.3
Now it's debatable that 8.3 is more stable and offers performance improvements over 7.1.2 on even the fastest device out there, but a 4S?? It's out of order to suggest that by clicking on the update you're being pestered to install, your old 4S phone will work better than it does right now. Scandalous.

Should Apple create a different changelog for every single possible upgrade path? It's reasonable to assume that most people updating to 8.3 were already on a previous version of 8, so that's why the update is advertised the way it is. If you choose to stay on 7 or below, you're in the minority regardless of how valid your reason might be.

Have you ever used iPad air 1? It even can't hold 3 Safari tabs, not talking about apps. Or issues with iPhone 6/6+ where it reloads apps.

I've been on iPhones since the 4S, and currently own the 4S, 5s, and now the 6.. and I have never seen Safari reload any tabs. This sounds like a case of how the device is used rather than a hardware limitation.

Android has more RAM because that OS actually needs it, and the manufacturers use the increased RAM as a selling point because some people will fall for the psychology of that tactic. iOS, however, is much more efficient.

I think the RAM usage is getting better within iOS particularly in the latest 8.3 and 8.4 builds. However, if Apple plans to continue doing that thing where last years' model becomes this years' middle of the road, yeah they will have to increase the RAM in the next model. Even if Apple puts 2GB in the flagship model this year, they will have to support 1GB devices until iOS 11 if they continue with there current strategy.

Plus, 1GB for a 64-bit OS? Really? Changing to 64-bit increased the size of the instructions, thus increasing the needed amount of RAM. 32-bit instructions under 1GB of RAM for a memory efficient mobile OS is fine. The A7 should have had 1.5GB of RAM minimum. RAM problems weren't bad with the 5s with iOS 7 but I can tell iOS 8 made it worse.

Lol at some of the comments in this thread.

The iPhone needs more RAM, there's no two ways about it. 2GB gives a much better user experience.

Which logically means that there's no need for more RAM on a smartphone...if logically means illogically that is.
