If you do not need an iPad now, wait until October when a new iPad is generally announced. Make your decision based on your urgent need.

Lol why do you think they will announce a new iPad in October ? They haven’t done annual upgrades ? At least for a while. The 10.5 to 11 took about 16-17 months and the wait between the 9.7 and 10.5 was longer I think. If any iPad gets upgraded it probably will be the 9.7 iPad not the pros.... if you can get a good deal now ( $100 or more off ) you should probably be safe and buy one now ...

Because rumors. And they’ve been spot on pretty much. Such as iPhone 11 pro is a given at this point.

100 or more? I was thinking at least 300.

Here’s the thing. iPadOS is real now. Apple always releases new phones with new iOS. I’d expect annual iPads now.

Lol. iOS has always been annual updates and it went to iPads as well. There won’t be an annual update for every iPad ... that’s just dumb. iPadOS is still iOS at heart ... won’t change update schedule for iPads. Cool rumors ? There isn’t much on iPads at all really. They won’t upgrade the pros and probably update the “iPad” this year.

$300 off ? lol you’ll rarely find that. I got mine for $380 off but you’ll not going to get that at Black Friday either.

I wasn’t suggesting getting a 1TB ipad that’s just dumb. But if you’re use case doesn’t reach 55GB now and you think 64GB is fine .... you might be better off buying a 256gb iPad Pro vs a 64GB model. iPads are usually kept longer then iPhones and Apple knows this since they rarely follow a 12 month cycle thee days. With a phone I would suggest only getting what you need because of the fact you probably only keep it 2 years tops unless you do keep it longer .... you should get more then what you need now for an iPad unless you upgrade whenever they come out with new ones. If you can afford a 256GB iPad Pro go get it tbh. You can’t add more later. The only time I would suggest getting a 64GB ipad is if you really only web surf , email and stream. It’s dumb that Apple only includes 64Gb on their iPad “Pro”. The longer you will own the device the better it serves you to get the next storage up option.
Note, Freida wasn't suggesting that someone using ~50GB on a 64GB device go with the minimum either. Someone close to the storage limit is likely better served going higher with next device purchase.

Rather, for example, someone who only uses 20GB or less, going 64GB on next upgrade is probably still fine.

I always get top storage for myself (64GB was insufficient for me back in 2012, much less now). However, I also buy devices for family members and my rule of thumb when buying for them is current storage used x2 (minus iCloud Photos).

We're on the $2.99/mo 200GB iCloud family plan. At $36/year, it'll take 16 years to offset the $600 that I would've spent on unnecessary storage upgrades ($100 x 3 iPads + $100 x 3 iPhones). That $600 isn't a one-time expense, either, as I'm sure I would've upgraded their devices at least 3-4 times during that 16-year period.

Most of my relatives use significantly less storage than I do. Only my wife uses as much, but only on her iPhone. She uses much less on iPads. We have no need for 256 GB in any of our iDevices:

For my relatives, kids, and wife, for an iPad: 32-64 GB
For myself, for an iPad: 64-128 GB
For my relatives for the iPhone: 32 GB
For myself and my wife, for an iPhone 128 GB.

This factors in usage for the next several years.

My kids both have 64 GB iPad Air 2s, which are hand-me-downs from my wife and me. They generally have less than 20 GB usage, although when we load them up with Netflix videos for vacations, then they may be over 32 GB.
My relatives get our hand-me-down iPhones, with the last one given being a 64 GB iPhone 6s. My mother-in-law has it, and she uses less than 10 GB IIRC.
My wife will be getting my iPad Pro 10.5" 64 GB, if I upgrade in the fall.
My wife has the 128 GB iPhone XR, and I have the 128 GB 7 Plus. If Apple offers a decent 128 GB iPhone in 2020, I'll upgrade then from my 7 Plus. My wife will be keeping her XR at least until 2021, but probably longer unless she breaks it or something.

BTW, we have a 32 GB Apple TV 4K. We have used only about 1/4 of the storage, and that's after downloading the 4K screensavers.

iCloud is inefficient and I can’t use it with no internet... I hate that I pay $0.99 for iCloud storage. On phones you’ll be upgrading Bi annually or annually most likely unless you’re the few that keeps them until they die. In that case don’t spend the money for more storage ... iPads you keep longer and thus it’s cheaper to spend $100 more for more storage then buy a new iPad ...

This is an iPad Pro thread. Apple charges US$150 to $400 more to increase the storage tiers on the iPad Pros.

99 cents for iCloud storage works out to $12 a year. As for internet access, I personally just tether my iPhone, as many people do. iOS 13 makes it much easier to maintain the tethered connection by the way. This is perfect for those of us with large data buckets on our iPhone plans.

BTW, I tend to keep iPhones 3-4 years, and so does my wife. As long as you get an iPhone with sufficient RAM, they continue to work fine for a long time.

Ideally. But an lte iPad eliminates a lot of headaches when the 5 yr old is screaming every 5 mins about losing internet. Then it’s a game of turning my hotspot off and on. I see more value in this than paying for more storage.

You're talking with the current version of iOS. As mentioned, iOS 13 changes this.

Automatic personal hotspot
Automatically connect to your nearby iPhone personal hotspot when there’s no internet connection available.

Persistent personal hotspot
Remain connected to your nearby iPhone personal hotspot even when your device sleeps, so you can receive incoming messages and push notifications.

Family sharing hotspot
Your family’s devices can automatically connect to your nearby iPhone personal hotspot when there’s no internet connection available.

iOS 13 & iPadOS 13 are really big deals. IMO, they may represent the biggest change to the OS in a decade, and hotspot support is just one of the many things that have changed significantly.

Well it’s hard to use hotspot when you used all 50GB and now at 2G speeds with sprint lol. It’s taking hours to download one movie ...

Nice. I wonder if this feature has been similarly updated on LTE iPads.

Hotspot kills my phone's battery but the iPads have such massive batteries that hotspotting is a fairly negligible drain on those. Would be convenient if it gets all the above features as well.

iCloud's adequacy depends on what you use the storage for.

In our household, we primarily just use it for iCloud backups and iCloud Photos (some document syncing as well but those are tiny). The photos are the lion share of storage usage on family members' iOS devices and for that, iCloud is an adequate and cheap alternative to local storage ($108 for 3 years vs $600!).

Yes, you can't upgrade internal storage on the iPad after you buy it. That said, even 32GB is more than sufficient for family members in our household (less than 20 apps installed: YouTube, Netflix, Facebook, FB Messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram, Chrome, Yelp, Google Maps, Uber, Lyft, Sudoku). Upgrading their iPhones and iPads to the next storage tier would just be $600 down the drain.

Nah, 9.7 to 10.5 was Mar 2016 to Jun 2017 so 15 months.

It was 1st gen and 2nd gen 12.9 that was longer (Nov 2015 - Jun 2017) at 19 months.

Phones are different but we aren’t talking about phones are we ? I don’t suggest to buy the higher storage because you upgrade sooner. That $150 is well worth the cost to upgrade to the next size up. This is assuming you’re willing to pay MSRP.. I wouldn’t pay MSRP for an iPad now. You can find them on sale now and depending on the deal it’s better to buy it now vs buying a revised one later at MSRP. You’re going to keep these iPads longer typically so the value is higher. Phones I have a 64GB and it’s fine .. sacrifice some stuff but it’s not a big deal.

As I said around ... I ballparked it because I don’t remember this stuff. Either way we aren’t going to get new iPad pros this year using that data ...

I'm referring to both. Now that the chipsets are more than good enough, our family's getting the same years of service from both iPhones and iPads.

On both iPhone and iPad, photos are the primary culprit for storage use and we're able to use iCloud Photos to mitigate that. If you take out photos, the apps, app data and system would use less than 10GB on each iPad and iPhone in the household so even 32GB is sufficient.

That is apart from the iPads I use. My 10.5 is at 200 / 512 used (restore from Pro 9.7, haven't really added new content yet) and my 12.9's at 450 / 512 used.

Just boils down to knowing the usage and storage requirements. And really, family members' iPads are pretty much just used for web surfing, streaming, email and social media. Maybe some casual/puzzle games. I suspect majority of iPads sold see similar usage.

Ok? People in general upgrade their phones faster ....

I am 99% positive there will be no new iPads this fall... except it’s possible a silent upgrade of RAM may increase or something.

April is the 10th anniversary for the iPad, so I really feel THAT is when we’ll get more releases.
I don’t recall Apple making much, of any, mention of the iPhone’s 10th anniversary. We did get the biggest departure from iPhone design that year, though. I doubt even less that they’d make a big deal of the iPad, which just barely saw a similar design shift last fall. (Also, the iPad was announced January 27, 2010. It just didn’t ship for a couple months).

Only you can answer that. When i wanted to buy my first ipad pro last Summer, I am glad I waited until the 11” iPP was announced in the Fall. I love this thing and the new Apple Pencil. I dunno what new features the next gen will have, but it depends what device you have now. Me? I won’t be tempted to upgrade as my current 11” does everything i need & more. But it might be worth the wait for you. It depends on many things. Again, only you can answer that question. Keep in mind we don’t even know if the new ipad pros will be available in the Fall or not until early next year. Keep watching for more leaks & then make your decision.

Well, they did skip 9 and went straight to 10. I wonder when they’ll drop the numbers and just go with iPhone and iPhone Pro (silly but whatever).

Yeah. Seems like an effort to make a solid distinction between new and old iPhone paradigms (all gesture vs. home button, edge to edge screen + notch vs. old forehead and chin, etc). I think if they call it the "Pro" they should drop the number scheme... I mean how long do they keep this up? They've dropped number designations for all their other iOS products except the watch, no? iPad, iPad Air, iPad Pro, iPad Mini, iPod Touch... main difference I guess is that the iPhone makes up such a massive portion of Apple's revenue that they probably want to have new names just for marketing, just so people know there's a new one.

If they name one the iPhone 11 Pro Max (as some are suggesting)...

Saw an iPad Pro today at Best Buy with student discount for about 375 off. 11” 256gb Wifi space grey. I could combine that with an Amex offer to get over 400 off. But don’t need one. Even 599 seems too steep for what you get.

I was also tempted, but didn't bite since I want the 12.9". However, that 11" deal is dead now since it was a price mistake.

Rumors have been way off, I.e. new keyboard on a new MBA?? Didn’t happen....

During any new release the Apple Apostles go just wild.
if you intend to buy a new apple product at least hold off till you can read some reviews.
